LIVINGSTON NEWS by Jennie Ball LIVINGSTON DAY MARKED SUCCESS The first Livingston Bargain Day was held Saturday and although the crowd was average size, enthusiasm was shown by those who attended. The Mt Vernon Band was present under the direction of Laudell Atkinson and several numbers were played and they were warmly applauded. Dr. R. G. Webb, President of the Livingston Lions Club then introduced the speaker of the day, Mr. Fritz Krueger, who spoke on “Shall We Go To War”. Mr. Krueger recounted the progress of the war and vividly showed how Hitler had repeatedly used the same tactics in conquering the countries that are now under his relentless domination. His talk was well received. At the conclusion of Mr. Krueger’s address, a poll was taken on the subject of his talk. “Shall We Go To War.” Sixty-nine ballots were counted and of this number 54 voted against going to war and 15 for immediate entry into the conflict. The consensus of this vote ranks very closely with that of the latest Gallop Poll. Mrs. Helen Rice of Livingston received the dollar award given by Dr. Webb. Mrs. Rice was the oldest person present. Her age being 62 years. The real entertainment of the day was furnished by the thirteen women who entered the rolling pin throwing contest Mrs. Ben Griffin was given the dollar prize for throwing this weapon the farthest. Mrs. Sam Halcomb was second and Mrs. W. J. Carpenter was third. The big disappointment of the contest was Mrs. R. G. Webb. She stated that she was much better when a live target was available to shoot at. Several of the judges who were figuring the yardage narrowly missed getting hit by the wild throwing females, but years of practice in the art of dodging probably saved their lives. The contestants who entered were Mrs. R. G. Webb, Mrs. John Ball, Mrs. Ben Griffin, Mrs. Glen Ponder, Mrs. Sam Halcomb, Mrs. Jim Whitaker, Mrs. Martha Ping, Mrs. A. J. Schrock, Mrs. Bill Poynter, Mrs. Jim Oliver, Mrs. W. J. Carpenter, Mrs. W. A. Stokes and Lula Smith. It is expected that a bigger and better day will be held in the near future.
