HOUK & ADAMS must have operated quite a store. They had an Ad in almost every issue during that period. A note in their Ad in this issue stated: As dealers of GENERAL MERCHANDISE we handle everything for the trade. Country folks will do well to let us handle their produce, and enjoy the Bargains received in return. CHAS. C. DAVIS operated a drugstore in Mt Vernon. A line in his Ad in this issue stated: TOILET ARTICLES GALLORE. Phone no. 64, Day or Night. (Note; All phones numbers were two digits) WILLIS GRIFFEN ran an Ad as a Practical Undertaker with a picture of a horse drawn hearse. A line in the Ad read: ORDERS by wire promptly filled. There was always an Ad for FLETCHER'S CASTORIA. C.C. Williams Attorney at Law in Mt Vernon had an office on the 2nd floor of The Bank of Mt Vernon on Church Street. His Ad stated: Special attention given to collections. M. L. Meyers, Dentist advertised "First Class Work" He indicated that he would be in office at Brodhead every Monday noon until Tuesday noon. J. C. McClary Stanford, Ky also advertised that he had a complete line of caskets and robes. Joseph Coffey ran the VERANDA HOTEL at Stanford, Ky. He advertised:"Bath rooms free to guests, RATES $2.00 per day. The Bank of Mt Vernon opened in 1900. It advertised a Capital Stock of $15,000. Following are the listed officers: C.C. Williams, Pres. Jas. T. Adams, Vice-Pres., W.L. Richards, Cashier, A.B. Furnish, Asst. Cashier, Directors were: C.C. Williams, Geo Livesay, A. T. Fish, S.H. Martin, Rod Perry and J.E.Houk. W.M. Francisco ran an Ad for his monument Works at Brodhead, George Jeter advertised the FRITH HOTEL. The Ad indicated that a Livery was attached. The MILLER HOUSE advertised as Headquarters for Commercial Men. S.B. Ramsey advertised Fresh Meat of all kinds. (S. B. Ramsey was my grandmother's, Ellen Ramsey Evans, brother) GRANVILLE OWENS the undertaker ran an Ad for his business with a picture of a horse drawn hearse. (My mother's sister, Ethelene Lawrence, married Granville Owen's son Delmas) He indicated he had a full line of Coffins, Caskets and Robes. F. KRUEGER AND SONS of Mt Vernon ran an Ad for their store that stated: The Place To Get Your: Shoes, Clothing and Dry Goods of all Kinds. The following were candidates for JAILER: R. M. Johnson, G.W. Decker, L.L. Jarrett, Charley Carmical. H.L. Tate was candidate for County Court Clerk. Elmer Houk and J.B. Cummins were candidates for County Assessor.G. M. Ballard was running for re-election as Superintendent of Schools of Rockcastle County. Some items appeared to news related when they were really advertisements. For example; the Iron Mountain Route announced: DAILY TOURIST SLEEPERS TO CALIFORNIA. They gave various routes and times available and indicated that R.T.G. Matthews the ticket agent could be contacted at the Norton Building in Louisville. There was a listing of upcoming fair dates. The brodhead Fair was to be held on the following week August 17,18 and 19th.
