Crutcher, District Supervisor of Lexington visited the local Farm Security Office Friday. – Claude Chaney is in Hiawassee, Georgia where he has employment with the Bertram Construction Company. – Kenneth Mullins of Gilbertsville spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Mullins. – Mrs. Earl Mullins and daughter Shirley spent the weekend witk her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Taylor at Danville. – Mrs. Ruth Croughron spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Croughron at Columbia, Ky. – Mrs. Bently Sparks of Cincinnati spent Tuesday and Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Bird. – Mrs. N. M. Smock and daughter Doris were in Lexington last Wednesday to be with her brother, Harold Mitchel who submitted to an operation at St. Joseph Hospital. Reports coming from him say his condition is improving. – Mrs. J. J. Purcell and daughter Louise of Plato, Ky. spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. Mal McKinney. – Mrs. R. C. Ferguson and children spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Padgett at Sheperdsville. – Mrs. Wm. Cox, Mrs. Isaac Shelby and Mrs. L. L. Felton spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Stanford and Lexington. – Mr. and Mrs. Orin Towner and children of Louisville were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Warren Friday night. Miss Mabel Kirkland and Thomas Whitehouse of Perryville were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kearney Campbell. – Dr. M. Pennington, Mrs. N. J. Tipton and Mrs. Delores Fairchild were in Louisville Monday to consult a specialist concerning an ear infection from which Mrs. Fairchild has been suffering. – Mr. and Mrs. Al Packard of Dayton, Ohio visited Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Sigmon over the weekend. – Mrs. Frank DeJarrett and Mrs. H. C. Thompson of LaTonia spent the weekend with the latters parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Davis and attended the show at Renfro Valley. – Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Stokes and children of Waynesburg were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Davis. – Mrs. E. C. Walton of Stanford spent Thursday with her daughter, Mrs. Ann Miller and family. – Mrs. Bergen Bordes and daughter Juliane of Lexington spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Ann Miller. – Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Denny and her mother, Mrs. W. E. King spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Denny at Saylersville. – Mrs. Ben Bray left Thursday for a two weeks vacation. They will visit Newport News, Va. and from there will go to Washington, D.C. – Mrs. Charles Gibson, Mrs. Ed Henry and Miss Dorothy Haff spent Friday in Lexington. – Mr. and Mrs. Philo Hoyt of South Bend, Ind. are visiting Mrs. J. W. Riddle, Dan Bullock and other relatives over the county this week. – Sheriff Earl Phillips spent the latter part of last week with Mrs. W. H. Allen in Cincinnati. He was accompanied home by Phillip Ray Turner who spent the weekend here. – Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bray spent Sunday in Richmond. – Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Farmer of Lexington spent Sunday here with relatives. – John Tom Mullins and Clifford Mullins of Dayton spent the weekend with their mother, Mrs. John Mullins. – Kenneth Helton Hopkins who works for the Bell Telephone Company spent the weekend with his mother, Nancy Helton. BRODHEAD LOCAL NEWS by Lillian Wallin DEATH John James Painter was born on Painter’s Hill near Brodhead, Kentucky, January 5, 1868, and died October 7, 1941 at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 2 days. On September 24, 1909, was married to Lillian Rash who survives him. Surviving him are his children, namely, Mrs. Virginia Neale of Texas City, Texas, Mrs. Georgia Sayers of Covington, Ky., Mrs. Florida Muncey of Crab Orchard, Ky., William and Maryland Painter of Brodhead, Ky., two sons by a former marriage, Carl Painter of Hazard, Ky. and Herbert Painter of Idaho; five grand children; one sister Mrs. Elizabeth Swinford of Pueblo, Colorado. Many other relatives and friends mourne his loss. Mr. Painter was converted and united with the Brodhead Baptist Church at the age of 12. For many years he served as Clerk of the Rockcastle County Association and for several terms he was a member of the State Board of Missions representing the Rockcastle Association. He was also clerk of the Brodhead Baptist Church for several years. Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. N. M. Garrett, Leslie Elder, Ralph Albright, Tony Laswell, John Laswell, D. H. Gray, Mr. Ben Helm and John Sowder. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: J. W. Newland of Hopeville, Ga., Samuel Newland of Louisville, Carl Painter of Hazard, Ky., Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Newland of Fort Thomas, Ky. LOCAL ITEMS Mrs. W. M. Bullock sold her property on Main Street to Mr. Jim Brown on Monday. The price was $4000. – Mr. Johnny Sowder sold his store to Mr. R. E. Hasty of Crab Orchard. Mr. Hasty sold his store in Crab Orchard and will move to Brodhead soon. – Miss Ophelia Oakes of Lancaster is the guest of her Aunt Mrs. Ida Meredith for a few days. – Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dees and children Betty and Bobby of Nashville, Tenn are the guests of relatives here. – Mr. Claude Dees of Nashville, Tenn. arrived for a two-week vacation with relatives. – Mr. and Mrs. Lois Sigmon and children of Louisville were the guests of his mother, Mrs. Mollie Sigmon last weekend. – Mr. Millard Robbins who is stationed at Camp Shelby, Miss. Is at home for a few days with relatives. – Mr. and Mrs. M. . Albright left Tuesday on a business trip to Knoxville, Tenn. – Mesdames Leslie Elder, O. R. Cass, Hope Cox and Katie Roberts were in Lexington shopping Tuesday. – Mr. O. J. Collett was injured Monday afternoon doing some fancy skating at the Brodhead Skating Rink. He will be back on his job in a few days. – Mr. Johnny Lunsford who is in the Berea Hospital is steadily improving. – Mr. and Mrs. Burgess Hysinger, Mr. and Mrs. Owens and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey of Rose Hill were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Hysinger. – Mr. Cecil Lunsford of Louisville was here and at Berea to see his brother Mr. John Lunsford. – Pvt. Dallas McWilliams and Fred Holcomb left for Camp Shelby, Miss. after a visit with their parents. – Misses Mary Ann Davis and Christine Bussell were down from the formers aunt Mrs. Walter Robins. – Messrs. E. C. Watson, O. J. Collett and James Meredith were in Berea Sunday to see John Lunsford. – Rev. and Mrs. Warren Filkin and children, Mrs. Jack Fletcher and Mrs. Jack Garrett were in Richmond Monday. – Rev. Castleberry of Richmond who is holding a revival at Oak Hill was the Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Smith. – Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tharp and Miss Tempest Ward of Crestwood were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Jenny Wallin. – Mrs. Pat Bowling and children of Middletown, Ohio are the guests of her father, Mr. Elias Mays and family. – Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Taylor and Junior Martin attended the show at Renfro Valley Saturday evening. -- Mr. J. C. Newland returned to his home in Florence, Ky. after a few days visit here. J. Collett motored to Danville Thursday on business. HIATT NEWS by Bonnie Berry Aunt Mollie Hiatt who has been at Berea for the past two weeks was at home Thursday night. She is improving slowly. – Miss Ethel King of near Crab Orchard spent the weekend with Miss Bonnie Berry. – Uncle Whit Boyd is getting along very well at his writing. – The revival at Oak Hill is progressing fine. Everybody should hear the good sermons. – Miss Bertha McWhorter of Chestnut Grove spent the weekend with Miss Ina Belle and Iva Fay Lear. – Anna Belle Smith was taken to Stanford to the doctor Saturday. She has been very sick for the past three weeks. – Mrs. G. H. Berry visited her niece, Mrs. Frank Maple at Chestnut Grove last Thursday. – Mrs. Pigg, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hubble and daughter, Miss Carroll spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Hubble. – Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Spoonamore, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Doyle and Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Sargeant were dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Roberts. – Landus and Howard Harding were home from the CCC Camp at London last weekend. – Rev. LIVINGSTON LOCAL NEWS Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Bass were in Lexington Monday. – Mrs. M. L. Bass is visiting her sister, Mrs. Frank Hacker at LaTonia this week. – Mrs. Charley Mounts was the charming hostess to the members of the Eastern Star chapter at a buffet supper Thursday evening. Decorations in the dining room of flowers and candlelight were very beautiful. A very enjoyable evening was spent by all that attended. – Elmer Halcomb of Cumberland, Ky. visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Halcomb over the weekend. – Mrs. Ada Mink was called to Richmond, Ind. last week due the illness of her nephew. – Mrs. M.
