Hampton of Winchester was appointed by the President as Assistant Quartermaster in the volunteer army with the rank of captain. Edward Cusic a washington county farmer was dismissed by United States Commissioner Boldrick at Lebanon having been arrested by the Federal authorities charged with violating the postal laws. Birdwhistell editor of the News died suddenly of apoplexy at the residence of her son at Lawrenceburg Henry Lewis was arrested at Lexington on the charge of being implicated in teh murder of Eugene Cassell on Jan 5. Cassell was shot and killed by unknown persons who were caught in the act of leaving with a number of stolen fowls At Frankfort Thomas Kand a private in the State Gurards was shot and illed by James Robertson a fellow soldier. The killing was accidental but Robertson is in jail. Both men resided at Lexington The wife and two children of Ed Epperson of Warren county were poisoned by eating a plant which they had mistaken for ginseng.
