BRODHEAD LOCAL NEWS by Miss Lillian Wallin WEDDINGS: Miss Virginia Phillips, the attractive daughter of Mrs. Angie Phillips became the bride of Mr. Edwin Parsons in a ceremony conducted in Louisville Saturday evening by Rev. Childers pastor of the Louisville Baptist Church. The groom is a Smith-Hughes graduate of Berea College and is a teacher of vocational agriculture at White Mills, Ky. The bride has many friends in Brodhead where she has been a poplar member of the younger set. The happy couple will make their home at White Mills, Ky. Curtis Kincer, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kincer was married to Miss Frankie Hard of Louisville Saturday. Mr. Kincer is well known here having graduated from high school and he also attended the Eastern State Teacher’s College at Richmond. The groom is employed in Louisville where the couple will make their home. Miss Lucille Owens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Owens surprised her many friends here by going to Livingston, where she was united to Mr. Denver Belcher. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Bass, pastor of the Baptist Church of Livingston. Miss Owens is a graduate of the Brodhead High School, and at present is employed by the Citizens Bank. Possessed by a charming personality she has made many additional friends since joining the bank, by her agreeable manner and friendly disposition. The groom is employed in Cincinnati. The newlyweds left Saturday for a short trip through the Smoky Mountains. LOCAL NEWS Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Cromer were in Mt Vernon Saturday on business. – Mrs. Ollie Hoskins from Mt Vernon was in Danville Friday. – Mrs. Florence Coffey took her daughter, Christine to Danville to see a doctor. – Mrs. Ruby Brock and Mrs. S. R. Cromer were in Danville Friday to see a doctor. – Rev. Harold Newlan and wife visited S. R. Cromer and family Friday afternoon. – Mrs. Sallie Ross is on the sick list at this time. – Mr. and Mrs. Charley Hendrickson and family and Miss Aneta Kurtz of Nichsolasville were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Albright and Mr. and Mrs. K. J. McKinney Sunday. – Mrs. John Howard of Pineville is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Lafevers. – Miss Ophelia Oakes returned to her home in Lancaster Wednesday after a two weeks visit with her aunt, Mrs. Ida Meredith. – Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Helm have returned home after a trip through Virginia where Mrs. Helm’s nephew, Howard McBroom, who accompanied them, entered Shennendoah College in Dayton, Virginia. They then visited relatives in Columbus, Ohio and Woodstock, Illinois and then on to Milwaukee, Wisc. – Miss Amanda Kincer returned home Sunday after a visit with her sister Mrs. Harold Tucker and Mr. Tucker in Cincinnati, Ohio. – Misses Mary Elizabeth Reynolds and Raye Owens left Tuesday for Covington. Miss Reynolds will go on to Columbus, Ohio for a visit with her father. – Mr. and Mrs. Stout of Los Angles, California are the guests of his sister, Mrs. Ed Barger and Mr. Barger. – Mr. and Mrs. Charley Cox returned to their home in Hamilton, Ohio after a visit with his father, Mr. Other Cox. – Misses Jean McCall and Dorothy Hoskins were in Mt Vernon and Stanford Tuesday. – Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Holman of Eubanks were the guests of relatives here Tuesday. – Mrs. Earl Mullins and Mrs. Henry Morgan were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Brooks, Jr. at Anchorage over the weekend. Mrs. Mullins also visited her husband who is a patient in the Hazelwood Sanitarium. – Mr. and Mrs. Hope Cox were here Sunday to get their daughter, Kay who will enter school at Somerset. – Mrs. Bernice Marcum and Miss Mary Bell of Louisville were visiting Mrs. Emma Frith and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hendrickson over the weekend. – Mr. and Mrs. Guy Albright were the Sunday guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Gatliff at Roundstone. – Mrs. Tom O’Mara and Mrs. Rex McDaniels were the guests of Mrs. Creed Russell on Monday. – Mr. and Mrs. Walter Robins spent Friday in Lexington on business. – Mr. J. B. Frith, Jr. of Louisville was the guest of his grandmother, Mrs. Bettie Frith last week. – Mrs. E. J. Hiatt and Mr. and Mrs. Charley Smith last week. -- NEGRO CREEK LOCAL NEWS by Mrs. Rose Chandler George Benge, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Rice Benge and a former resident of this place was buried in the Mt Zion burying ground Saturday. He is survived by his parents, wife and several children, and brothers and sisters to mourn his passing. – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Atkinson and daughter of Norwood, Ohio visited her parents over the weekend. – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Benge and children of Middletown, Ohio were here over the weekend for the funeral of his brother, George Benge. – Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Layne formerly of Celo, N. C. and who now reside in near Louisville visited her father and brother S. E. and Gus Chandler over the weekend. – Mrs. Lillian Chandler and children of Corbin were with her brother, Chas. Lewis and family over the weekend, also another married sister of North Carolina has been with them for ten days. – Bill Carson and Mary E. Chandler were in Danville shopping Friday afternoon. – Brown Proffitt of Lockland, Ohio was with his family Sunday. – All day services were held at the Holiness Church here Sunday. Several preachers were here from other churches were here and large crowds came from all over the county to listen to the services and renew old acquaintances and partake of the dinner served on the ground. HIATT NEWS by Miss Bonnie Berry Aunt Mollie Hiatt who has been on the sick list for sometime is no better. – Mr. G. H. Berry and daughter, Bonnie visited relatives in Indiana and Illinois last week. Mr. Berry visited two of his sisters that he had not seen for 46 years. – Uncle Whit Boyd who had a light stroke is much improved. – Mr. and Mrs. Albert Roberts visited their sons in Indiana and Ohio last week. – Tom Frey of Louisville spent Monday night with G. H. Berry and family. – Mr. Guy Crawford has returned to his work after two weeks with his parents and children here. – Mr. and Mrs. John Berry of Villa Grove, Ill. Visited relatives and friends here last week. – Rev Hubble filled his appointment at Beech Grove Saturday and Sunday. – Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bullock of Brodhead were up to see Mr. Whit Boyd last Sunday. – Mrs. C. C. Crawford has returned home from a week’s visit with her daughter in Letcher County. – Champ Crawford was in Danville last Monday with a load of cattle and hogs. – The farmers here are busy cutting corn and tobacco. – M. G. Sigmon of Green Hill spent a few days here with his friends. – W. J. Alcorn purchased a nice milk cow from E. L. Skidmoore last week. QUAIL NEWS by Mrs. R. B. Albright Misses Martha Craig and Iva Ellen Cable spent Saturday and Sunday with Miss Elizabeth Brown. – Mr. and Mrs. Jay Brown and family visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Cable Saturday night and Sunday. – Mr. Allen Hiatt who is in the Berea Hospital is very ill at this writing. – Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ponder spent a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Albright. – Mrs. W. H. Logsdon who has been sick is some better. – Mr. and Mrs. Jay Albright spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Albright and was accompanied home by Mrs. Mr. and Mrs. Will Owens. – Mr. Charles Brown left Sunday for Tennessee where he will enter the Freed Hartman Bible College. LIVINGSTON NEWS by Jennie Ball Livingston P. T. A. Met Monday The Livingston P. T. A. met Monday Sept. 22 for the purpose of deciding what projects to sponsor for the coming year. The group decided that they would sponsor a project for putting water into the school and adding band instruments in our school. There was good representation by both parents and teachers at the meeting. An interesting talk was given by Miss Lida Cook on why “We Have a P. T. A.” Mr. J. A. Mounts spoke on “Ways To Kill a P. T. A. Ice Cream and Cake were served. LOCAL NEWS Dr. and Mrs. R. G. Webb and Calvin Webb were in Boston, Ky. Saturday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Marcia Harned Daughtery. They were accompanied by Mrs. Anna Barber, mother of Mrs. Webb who had spent several weeks here. – Mrs. Prater and son Elmer visited relatives in Middlesboro last week. – Mrs. Bob Rice of Jackson County visited relatives here last week. – Mr. and Mrs. Chester Bales of East Bernstadt were here Monday. – Mr. Benet Mullins was with his family here over the weekend. – Mrs. G. R. Ball of Winchester visited Mrs. John Ball here Monday. – Mrs. Sam Halcomb and son Ralph have returned home after a visit in Cumberland. – Mrs. Celia Payne and daughter, Fannie, Miss Jennie Ball and Mr. Les Evans attended the show in Corbin Sunday night. – Miss Nina Jean Pike of Paris was home over the weekend. – County Agent, Robert Spence conducted a National Defense Program at the high school Tuesday. – Mr. Jim Doyle of London was laid to rest at the Ward Cemetery Friday September 19. Bass conducted the service. – The Livingston Lions Club sponsors of the newly organized Corbin Club with their wives, attended the Charter Night Banquet at the Cumberland Falls Hotel Tuesday night.
