The following first appeared in the Mount Vernon Signal on May 31, 1907. It was recently transcribed from microfilm of that issue of the Signal. With these submittals, I am sharing these gleanings with the Signal's present readers. WILDIE NEWS Wildie is on a boom with two new stores. - Miss Anna Branaman has returned home after a pleasant visit with her friends in Mt Vernon. - Mrs. Ellen Gillion of Nebraska is visiting her sister, Mrs. A. T. Fish. - Mr. Willie Branaman of Berea was with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Abe Branaman last Saturday and Sunday. - Mr. Jesse Fish was over from Hiatt Sunday. - Mr. Richard Branaman visited his sister Mrs. J. M. Crawford at Brodhead last Saturday and Sunday. -- Mr. Dillard Farthing who has been very sick with the measles is much better. - Miss Ellen Wild has returned home after a few days visit with her friends at this place. - Miss Bessie Fish is the pleasant guest of her cousin Mrs. A. C. Towery at Berea this week. - Mr. Albert Fish made a flying trip to Hiatt last Saturday. - Mr. Charlie Adams was in Mt Vernon Saturday. - People are getting along nicely with their crops. ORLANDO NEWS News was received here last week of the death of Mr. Henry Doan, of Laurel county. Mr. Doan was up in ninety years of age. He has many relatives in this county and was a brother of Uncle George Doan, an old and honored citizen of Pine Hill, and was a brother-in-law to Mr. Harrison Reams, of Dudley. He leaves an aged wife and several children besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn his death. - James McGuire is very sick and his recovery is doubtful. - Mrs. Flury Laswell has been very sick but is some better at present. - Mrs. Bill Wood, of Roundstone, was visiting at Brush Creek Tuesday. - Dr. D. B. Southard was called in consultation with Dr. Laswell Sunday to see the ten year old child of Dee Hines, who has an abcess in his side. They reported the case improved to some extent. - A Sabbath school was organized at McNew's chapel Sunday with Mr. I. A. Chasteen as Superintendent. - The many friends of Miss Sallie Barnett who have been anxious for her recovery will be glad to know that she is convalescent. However, she has been almost at deaths door. - Mr. and Mrs. George Reams were the welcome guests of Dr. and Mrs. Laswell Sunday. - Mrs. Nettie Anglin, who has been very low with typhoid fever is convalescent - Miss Margie Childress was visiting Miss Dora Bell and Miss Allie Laswell Sunday. - DEAD: Pearl, the sweet little infant of Marion and Lydia Bryant died of scrolula May 28. The bereaved parents have our heartfelt sympathy in this their greatest sorrow. - GRIFFINS MILL NEWS Mabelle Cummins is visiting her grandparents at Mt Vernon. - Mrs. Wm. Hurst is visiting her daughter Mary A. Braughton of Somerset. - Sunday school at Poplar Grove is progressing nicely. - Rev. Reubin Hurley preached at Poplar Grove last Sunday. - The dedication the 2nd Sunday was largely attended. QUAIL NEWS The infant child of Dr. Proctor is very sick at this writing. - Mrs. Martin Owens continues very low. - Services will be conducted at Bethel Sunday at 10 a.m. by Rev. Todd. - Elijah Herrin who has been sick for some time, continues worse at this issue. - Don't forget the decoration at Providence church Saturday June 29th. - The recent cold spell is damaging the corn crop very much and rain is badly needed. - Wm. Watson and wife, of Nina, Garrard county, are spending the week with his sick mother, Mrs. Martin Owens. - Jacob Elder and Wm. Owens are teaching a singing school at Maywood. - W. H. Brown and wife, of Preachersville, spent Sunday with Eld. Martin Owens. - LEVEL GREEN NEWS Robert Hamm, son of George Hamm, died of consumption on the 18th inst. and was interred in the Mt Pleasant cemetery on the 20tth. His sister Miss B. died on the 25th of the same disease and was interred in the same cemetery. - Mrs. Wm. Hurst is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Coleman Broughton of Somerset. - Mrs. Wade Brown has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Debord of Walnut Grove. - The colored people had a basket dinner in Africa Sunday and of course had a very enjoyable time as they always do. Quite a number of their colored friends from Mt Vernon attended. - Born to the wife of W. F. Debord a fine baby girl on the 9th. Mother and baby both doing well. - Also born to the wife of Daniel Bullock a boy. - Rev. Farley held services at Bro. Jonas Pitmon's residence on the eve of the 20th. - B. B. Hatcher has returned home after visiting his son, Otto who was hurt at Lebanon. - W. J. Brown and wife of Quail have been the guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brown. - Mr. Forbes who has been employed at Somerset, visited homefolks Saturday. - The Sunday schools at Poplar Grove, Mt Pleasant and Burnett's are progressing nicely. Some of boys and girls of this place attended the teacher's examination and report the questions very difficult to answer. - George Owens, proprietor of the monument works, of Mt Vernon, put up stones at the graves of J. N. Brown, Mrs. Flora Saylor and Mrs. Jane Duncan, in Friendship cemetery last week, which adds greatly to the beauty of the cemetery as well as showing how well we love our departed ones. - Miss Frances Forbes was the pleasant guest of Mrs. W. F. Debord on last Sunday afternoon. - C. D. Sutton of Mt Vernon spent Sunday with homefolks. - On account of a severe attack of rheumatism, Mrs. J. N. Brown was unable to return home with her son, Thos who lately visited relatives in McAlester, I.T. - Mrs. H. P. Broyles is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burnett in Knox county. - There will be decoration services at Mt Pleasant cemetery in the afternoon and at Friendship in the afternoon on the 30th conducted by Rev. Cummins and Farley. - Mrs. W. A. Todd has been very sick. BRODHEAD NEWS Jno. E. Evans has returned home after spending 3 months in the North Eastern part of Kentucky. - Clay Gentry is here painting the J. W. Hutchesons house. - Miss Lizzie Storms is the charming visitor of Mrs. Lou Storms. - Mrs. G. W. Brooks of Knoxville Tennessee is here as the guest of his mother, Mrs. M. E. Wilmott. - Mrs. J. R. Cass and son William Sheridan visited her daughter, Mrs. L. B. Hilton at Pine Hill. - Dr., O. O. Stone is spending a few days with his parents at Cumberland Gap Tennessee. - W. A. Parsley and Jass. Russell of London were calling on our merchants Tuesday - H. B. McClary is acting cashier of Peoples Bank at Mt Vernon during the absence of Mr. Salins. - Rev. Andrew Johnson of Wilmore is visiting his uncle Larkin Hicks. - Rev. A. J. Pike has been called away twice this week to preach funerals one in Marion county and one in Garrard county. - There will be a strawberry and ice cream supper here tomorrow night. Proceeds go to the Baptist Church. - Miss Eliza Pike is the charming visitor of Miss Emma Jones at Hyatsville, Ky. - Shugars Soda Fountain is the place for all the cold delicacies of the season. - Mrs. Dr. D. B. Southard of Mt Vernon visited her mother Mrs. Sarah E. Barnes Monday and Tuesday. - Mrs. Conn, of Mt Vernon is visiting Mrs. Harry Hilton. - Mrs. M. B. Salin of Mt Vernon is visiting Mrs. J. W. Hutcheson this week. - Mrs. Ethel Parker has returned to her home at Martensville, Va. After spending 4 months here as the charming visitor of her sister Mrs. W. E. Gravely. - A letter from C. C. Gable says he will stay in Cuba for 4 months yet. - Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hicks are visiting their many friends and relatives here. - Miss Myrtle Wells of Crab Orchard visited her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. Francisco first of the week. - Chas. Branaman of Wildie visited the family of Jno. Crawford first of the week. - Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith have returned from a weeks stay in the country. - Mr. and Mrs. Albright and M. B. Bowling were calling on two of Mt Vernon's belles last Sunday afternoon and evening. - Miss Mattie Wilmott has returned from a weeks stay with her uncle, Granville Leece, on Copper Creek. - Quite a crowd of young folks spent last Sunday afternoon very pleasantly at Miss Burdette Owens. - J. L. Robins continues very low we are sorry to say. - J. W. Hutcheson was in Louisville on business last part of last week. OTTAWA NEWS James W. Brown sold to John Rogers a mare a few days since for $125. - The wheat crop seems to be on the decline in this section. - Howard Cash, of near Poplar Grove visited relatives and friends here Sunday. - Mr. and Mrs. James W. Brown visited friends and relatives in Lincoln county Sunday. - There is a great deal of sickness in the neighborhood at this issue. - Mrs. Sarah Long visited in Lincoln county Saturday and Sunday. - Frost did considerable damage to garden vegetables here last Tuesday night. - Mrs. Margarite Brown visited relatives here Saturday. - Lincoln Stringer was in Brodhead Tuesday on business. - S. W. Proctor, of Quail, sold his farm at this place to a Mr. Barnett for $1800. - Miss Ella Hayes, of Lincoln county, visited here Saturday. - Daniel Brown and family visited Robert Brown and family Saturday. - J. B. Sutton and family spent Saturday night with Tart Proctor and family. - Miss Lizzie Sutton, of Preachersville, returned home Friday after a weeks visit with friends and relatives at this place. - George Brown, of Lincoln county, visited Robert Brown Saturday. CONWAY NEWS Monday looked like winter had returned again. - Wm. Harden and George Owens have bought B. A. Riddle & Son's saw mill and are running it now on the Hart tract of land cutting timber for J. C. and Joe Wood. - C. H. Smith and D. C. Pullins made a business trip to Berea this week. - The Lear family is being visited by their brother, Eliga Lear, from Indiana, who has been away 21 years and to show his devotion to W. S. Beldon, his brother-in-law, of this place, 32 of the family ate a fine dinner with Mr. Beldon Sunday and all parties enjoyed the dinner and the day very much with Uncle Scott. - Miss Zelma Jones, of Mt Vernon, is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. J. Wood, this week. - A Post office inspector was through here last week looking after Uncle Sam's tricks along the line. - J. J. Wood sold a horse to John Lutes of Jessamine county for $95. - Burton Beldon caught thirty-six bull frogs one morning last week. Burton says Chris Wood could learn the trade if it did not look so much like work to follow one when he got started on a chase. - Mr. George Cornelison is trying to learn to pick the banjo, but we fear that George has waited until he is too old to take up music and will make a failure in his new undertaking. - Miss Gertrude Pullins enjoyed her fifteenth birthday on the 27th inst. by giving a birthday dinner and the day was very pleasantly spent by her and 15 or 20 of the neighbor children. - The two year old baby of Mr. and Mrs. U. G. Berry is very sick with stomach trouble and is not expected to live. LIVINGSTON NEWS Mrs. Frank Longmire accompanied her sister, Mrs. James Lane to her home in Coal Creek, Tenn. - Mrs. Mahala Carson has returned from a week visit with her daughter, Mrs. Cummins at Mt Vernon. - Mrs. Susie Hicks and her mother, Mrs. Will Hiatt have returned after a short visit with Mrs. Logan Salyers at Corbin. - James Vahn has completed the bridge just north of Livingston and has taken the "bridge boys" and his wife and children to Columbia, Tennessee. - Mrs. J. H. Browning is visiting her mother Mrs. Katie MaGee at Crab Orchard, KY. - W. C. Mullins was shaking hands with his many friends and relatives here from Monday until Wednesday. - Purd Martin has gone to Versailles where he will accept a position for the R. R.
