C_R_A_W_F_O_R_D) --------------------- OCT 20, 1899 NEWS IN KENTUCKY PHILPOTS AND BAKERS Members of the Faction Ambushed and Wounded in Clay County--John Hibbard Held up by Masked Men London, Ky, Oct 17..Last Saturday night Tom Philpot and Joseph Fields were ambushed at Bengtown, in Clay county. Philpot was shot in the head and Fields was shot in the stomach. Both will recover. Friday night Robert Hensley, of the Baker faction was ambushed near Saxton's creek and was badly shot in the foot. Sunday night John Hibbard a frend of the Philpot faction was held up near Manchester by eight mased men, who cut his clothes in shreds and badly slashed him and then set him free. Mullins announced in last weeks Signal his candidature for Legistature. Mr Mullins advises us that he will not make the race. We greatly regret his decision as we firmly believe he could have won the race W.J. Sparks and Robt Cox will go into the dry goods business in the brick on Chruch street recently vacated by Theo Wesley. Mr Sparks is now in Louisville buying an extensice stock and will bring it here at once. Both of these men are very popular and possessing fine business qualifications. We predict they will have a fine trade D.R. Totten announces himself an Independent Republican candidate for Legislature from the counties of Laurel and Rockcastle MARETBURG Mrs Lou Purcell is visiting Mrs R.S. martin of Brodhead this week L.E.
