OBIT: Greenhill, Donald Ira - 1995 - Rowan Co, KY ------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by: Louis M. Stewart Jcarter725@aol.com Date: June 15, 1999 ------------------------------------------------------- The Courier-Journal Louisville, KY Copyright 1995 Monday, June 12, 1995 NEWS MOREHEAD MAYOR DONALD GREENHILL DIES MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead Mayor Donald Ira Greenhill died Saturday at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington after a five-month illness. He was 64. Greenhill, who had been mayor since January 1994, had leukemia, said Charles Stansbury, city finance director. "It's going to be a great loss to the city of Morehead," Stansbury said. During Greenhill's term, the council voted to make his job full time. Greenhill, a Democrat, was first elected to the City Council in 1982 and served until 1991. During that time, he was an interim mayor for seven months after the resignation of Mayor John Holbrook in 1987. Greenhill, the former owner and operator of Greenhill Transport Co. and the Ashland Service Station on Flemingsburg Road, also was chairman of the Rowan County Library and a commissioner of the Morehead Housing Authority. He was member of First Freewill Baptist Church. Stansbury said the council has 30 days to appoint a successor, and, if the council doesn't do so, the governor will make the appointment. That person will serve until the next general election in November, Stansbury said, when someone will be elected to finish Greenhill's term. Greenhill is survived by his wife, Barbara Hall Jones Greenhill; a son, Donald I. Greenhill; a stepson, Michael Jones; two sisters, Phyllis Evans and Judy Roark, both of Olive Hill; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, with burial in Brown Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. tomorrow. Memorial gifts may go to the Rowan County Library Fund. ======================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
