Boyd Crawford Dies; Worked 38 Years on Hill

    JAMES A. ROWLAND

    Metallurgist

    James A. Rowland, 85, a metallurgist who retired in 1971 as
chief of the division of ferrous minerals at the Interior
Department's Bureau of Mines, died Jan. 5 at the Hospice of Northern
Virginia. He had emphysema.

    Mr. Rowland, who lived in Arlington, was born in Farmers, Ky. He
graduated from the University of Kentucky. Before moving to the
Washington area in 1966, he had worked at the naval shipyard in
Portsmouth, Va., and the Bureau of Mines in Salt Lake City.
