Smith Avery Smith was born on a farm in south central Kentucky on Aug. 1, 1943 to A.G. and Okra Dockery Smith. Following graduation from Russell County High School, he was a heavy equipment operator before going to the Army. Avery was killed in Vietnam on June 8, 1966 while trying to save other members of his platoon. For his heroic actions, he was posthumously award the Distinguished Service Cross. He was the first Russell County soldier killed in Vietnam.
