CARTER FOR RE-ELECTION The News had definate information that Circuit Judge J.C. CARTER will seek re-election to the office which he now holds and his announcement will appear at an early date . he is an experienced jurist and his announcement will no doubt be pleasing to his friends. LARGE CROWDS STILL CONTINUE AT MARY AGNES Large crowds attended the shows at the Mary Agnes Theatre last Thursday afternoon and night. Sarie and Sallie, entertainers from WSM, made personal appearances on stage and delighted everyone with their comedy. J.M. BLANKENSHIP ANSWERS CALL MR. J.M. BLANKENSHIP an aged and respected citizen of the clear Spring community passed away at his home Jan 31st and was buried at Clear Spring Church on February 1st. PRISONERS TO WORK ON ROCK PILE A large pile of rock is being hauled by the WPA and stored on the town hill near the Odd Fellows lot to be beat up into gravel for the roads. During the past several months from ten to twenty prisoners have been working all the time. ------missing--------use this labor for the benefit of roads and this many men can soon make ready for surfacing several loads of rock The prisoners will be worked on this project. As our jail bill is running high no doubt this will encourage a few to refrain from getting in so often. IMPROVEMENTS AT THE COURT HOUSE CLTDE HUDSON has been kept very busy the past week changing the appearance of the county Judge"s and Sheriff"s offices. Changes have been made in order to afford more room and a better opportunity for the officials to work without the public being in the way of their work. Every effort is being made by the officials to keep the records up to date. RETURNS FROM HOSPITAL MRS. OVALEN COMBEST, who underwent an operation in Louisville recently, returned home on Sunday, January 29, much improved in health. MRS. COMBEST is a daughter of MR. and MRS. N.A. WHITTLE of Jamestown BECK SOLD TWO CARS CLAUDE BECK, local Dodge and Plymouth dealer , sold to BRYAN BLANKENSHIP a 1937 used Chevrolet Car and a Model A Ford to BOB SMITH, of Creelsboro. Freinds of VERNON HOLT will be glad to learn his condition is very much improved. He is at SPRAGUE'S Sanitorium, Lexington , Kentucky GEORGE'S SALE LAST SATURDAY A large crowd attended the sale at the home of HOMER GEORGE last Saturday. Many articles were sold. the farm was sold privately to H.E. DUTTON and PORTER DUNBAR. It consists of about 80 acres. MR. GEORGE and his family left Monday night on the DUNBAR Truck line for Lebanon , Indiana MRS. MARGIE MERCER DIED IN DETROIT MRS. MARGIE MERCER who has been in failing health for a long time , died at her home in Detroit, Michigan last week and was brought to Wayne county and buried near Monticello, Ky. Some months ago her little boy died in Detroit and was brought to Wayne, County, the home of MR. MERCER, and buried. MARGIE was the only daughter of MR. and MRS. AL STEPHENS, of Russell Springs, was a splendid Christian woman and her relatives and friends in Russell County will miss her. W.A. COFFEY DIED AT COLUMBIA TUESDAY HON. W.A. COFFEY, Commonwealth"s Attorney of this district, died at his home in Columbia Tuesday, following a lingering illness. MR. COFFEY"s many friends throughout this section will be sorry to hear of his passing. TWO NEW TRUCKS SOLD DUNBAR Motors , local Ford Dealers, report the recent sale of 1 1/2 ton trucks to CARNES BROS. of Sewellton, and B.H. EDMONDS, Russell Springs. Two hundred and four Union county homes were electrically lighted for the first time in december. CARTER ANNOUNCES FOR RE-ELECTION AS CIRCUIT JUDGE The issue of January 26 of the Tompkinsville News, Tompkinsville, Ky carried the announcement of J.C. Carter as a candidate for re-election as circuit Judge of this the 29th Judicial District. At the end of the present term, JUDGE CARTER will complete 30 years of continuous service as Circuit Judge of this district. Other probable canidates are HONS. LILBURN PHELPS and S.A. SULLIVAN, of Jamestown , HEBRON Lawrence, of Thopkinsville, and OLIVER POPPLEWELL, of Liberty. Rural electrification is an assured fact for Russell County. R.E. LEE. Co-ordinater for the R.E.A. for the counties of Pulaski, Russell, Wayne , and clinton counties, was here recently and informed us that 30 miles of line had received a sufficient number of subscribers to make it go. The line will enter the county near Combest schoolhouse, and will extend to Creelsboro, Irwins Store, Fonthill, Russell Springs, and Olga and will serve approximately 100 famalies. branch lines will be built from the main lines to other communities. When as many as three subscribers per mile have been obtained. The R.E.A. will have about 120 miles of line, Wayne about 35 miles and Clinton about 15 miles. ROWENA NEWS Health is fairly good at this writing. We are expecting a big river in a few days as it has been raining so much. It was learned Sunday that MRS. RANY CARNES and MR. FLEECY NEAL were married at Columbia December 28. MRS. MYRTLE McFARLAND is at Glasgow for medical treatment. MR. and MRS. FLEECY NEAL visited MR. and MRS. RANDO CARNES, last Sunday night. MRS. SARAH McFARLAND remains about as usual. IRVINS STORE Health of this community is not so good . Many have colds JACOB GOSSER and J.D. HAMMOND, both being in poor health for some time are no better. The cold, disagreeable weather for the past two weeks, has given the farmer time to consider for this year"s crop while they sit by the fires, watching the red embers change from dimes to dollar bills, pigs to large hogs with two coils in their tails and doubtless many other scenes, only to be imagined, that never occur. BUD HATFIELD and sister, BERTHA, of danville, were visiting their sister MRS. LUTHER GOSSER, thru Sunday. MRS. GOSSER accompanied them home and returned late Monday evening. MRS. BESSIE SMITH, of Ono visited her mother, MRS. ARVILLE GOSSER most of the week. MRS. MARTHA HOPPER was at the bedside of her brother-in-law W.N. ROY, of Ingle, last week, MR. ROY had pneumonia and was buried last Friday, Jan 20th at cedar Point cemetary. EARL SWANTON and wife of Bethany Ridge were visiting at SAM ROY'S Sunday. MISS RUTH FOLEY, having finished her school at Combest has returned to her home on Bernard Ridge. As she stayed with her sister , MRS. ALVA GOSSER, through the term of school, MISS RUTH will be sadly missed at the Union Sunday School as she had made herself a regular attendant. MR. JAMES SULLIVAN, of Ingle was recently visiting his father. LULA ITEMS Health of this part is fairly good at this writing. CLARENCE JONES has purchased a new radio. The children were sad Friday as their school was out. JOHN McFARLAND is an efficient teacher and taught us a good school. We are sorry to give him up. LITTLE OMRI CHUMBLEY is on the sick list at this writing. MRS. ALMA HOLDER was calling on her sister, MRS CORA WESTON, Thursday evening. MRS. ELIZABETH DAFFRON was the pleasant guest of MISS THELMA CHUMBLEY Friday evening. SAM DUNBAR purchased two nice hogs one day last week. MRS. ALMA HOLDER and LAURA DAFFRON were the guests of MRS. SITHA WESTON Wednesday. MR. and MRS, JOE YORK spent Saturday night with the latter's parents, MR. and MRS. F.M. DAFFRON The rest of IRVIN'S STORE MR. JAMES SULLIVAN ,of Ingle, was recently visiting his father, MR. JOHN SULLIVAN, who is staying with his daughter, MRS. FLOYD WILSON. MR. and MRS. KEITH FOLEY, of Webbs Cross Roads, were visiting the latters parents . MR. and MRS. G.C. GOSSER Sunday. MESSRS. L.B. and CARL ROY had business in Jamestown one day this week. MR. C.C.STEPHENS who had the misfortune to lose his dwelling and its entire contents several weeks ago by fire, says he is very thankful for the help received from his many friends. MR. LATE McFARLAND has contracted to clear a piece of land for L.S. WILSON. MR. WILSON has recently purchased the land from MR. JOICE LAWSON. MISS. GRACE GOSSER happily entertained MISSES RITTA SULLIVAN and IRIS WILSON of Ingle saturday night. C.A. GARNER attended the revival at Russell Springs Wednesday, also attended the live stock sales. OLIVER GOSSER is busy sawing logs into lumbar at present, also the GOSSER & LUMBAR COMPANY will soon have a bounty of timber sawed out at Dorena, Ky The wedding bells have been ringing since we last wrote, this time it was MR. ESKER NORMAN of this place and MISS OLA RUSSELL of Dorena. That was on Saturday, January 14, and on Monday following, my, what an old time charivari they did receive. MRS. JAMES SMITH of Liberty, Ky spent several days last week with her father and mother, MR. and MRS. J.W. TAYLOR MILFORD TAYLOR recently purchased a new radio from our merchant, ALVA GOSSER, for $30. MILFORD says he didnt pay enough and aims to pay ALVA $20 more E.G. McKINLOY(perhaps misspelled McKINLEY) and MRS. EVA GOSSER finished their school Union today with a fairly regular attendance. The two high schools in the county are doing so much fine work that it appears likely at present, Irvins store will soon have its children enrolled in either of the two schools. Our first count tells us there are sixteen boys and girls attending at present.
