TANNER OTTLEY, well known Burkesville attorney, received at the hands of Governor CHANDLER, lasr Saturday, appointment as Commonwealth"s Attorney of the 29th Judicial District to serve untill November election. The vacancy occurred last week when the incumbent, HON. W.A. COFFEY, of Columbia, died. MR. OTTLEY is the first Democrat to hold the office of Commonwealth"s Attorney in this district in more than 40 years. He will appear for the first time here at opening of the term of court which convenes here on Feb. 20 NEW CLERK AT LAWRENCE DRUG STORE MISS LUCY DAVIS, of near Abany, Ky, who formerly held a nice position in Dayton, Ohio is at present employed at the lawrence Drug Stores as general clerk. MISS DAVIS comes to our town highly recommended as a first class business woman and no doubt will prove a valuable asset to the Lawrence drug firm. S.C. NEAT CALLED BY DEATH MR. SCHUYLER C. NEAT. who was well known in this county, died at his home in Columbia last Monday following a lingering illness. For many years MR. NEAT made this territory as a grocery salesman, later he was elected County Court clerk of Adair County and master commisioner of the Adair circuit Court. COE -STAPP WEDDING On Wednesday Feb 1st , MR. JUNIUS STAPP, of Russell Springs and MISS RUTH COE, of Jamestown accompanied by MR. WOODY FLANAGAN and MISS VIRGINIA WITHERS, drove to the home of REV. S.B. ROWE where they were quietly married, the REV. ROWE officiating. The bride is the youngest daughter of MR. and MRS. OLIVER COE and is extremely popular, and MR STAPP is a son of MR. and MRS. JOE STAPP and is a splendid young man. FUNERAL OF ANDREW MILLER HELD SUNDAY ANDREW MILLER, son of MR. RUBE MILLER, died at the home of WILLIE MILLER, his cousin about 1 1/2 miles from Jamestown Saturday and was buried Sunday about 3 P.M. at the MILER graveyard near Wooldridge Schoolhouse. REV. HOWARD O'BANION conducted the funeral. ANDREW was a quite boy, well liked by the people who knew him. He was a victim of Tuberculosis and had been in very poor health for several months. He was the nephew of P.S, G.D. and JOHN MILLER, who live near Jamestown. His father and mother preceded him to the grave several years ago. A good boy has passed. FATAL SHOOTING IN WAYNE COUNTY SELLER McCLELLAND shot and killed TOM JOHNSON at the formers home in the edge of Wayne county Wednesday night February 8. JOHNSON was about 35 years of age. Drunkeness was probaly the cause of the trouble. McCLELLAND was lodged in the Wayne County jail awaiting his examining trial which will be held Saturday. NEW INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS ELVIS CUNNINGHAM, proprietor of Cunninghams garage, Russell Springs, HOLIS MITCHELL, ROY McKINLEY, and L.E. GASKINS went to Springfield, Ohio last week and brought back three new international trucks, two of which were sold. They have also received two new fords, one deluxe 2 door, and one standard 60 2-door. They also have a wrecker and give wrecker service day or night. FUNERALL FOR MRS. POPPLEWELL HELD TUES. MRS. LOUISA JANE POPPLEWELL, wife of ORLANDO POPPLEWELL, died at her home near Webbs cross Roads, Monday February 6, and was buried at Popular grove on February 7th. MRS. JOSIE SMITH DIED AT HER HOME FEB. 8 MRS. JOSIE SMITH, widow of REV. WILLIAM SMITH, of Ono, passed away at the home of her sister MRS. C.F. KINNETT, in Horseshoe Bottom on Feb. 8th. She was a fine Christian woman and she will be sadly missed by her relatives and friends. Her husband, REV WILLIAM SMITH, died several years ago. Buriel was in the Cemetary at Square Oak Church near Ono. MRS. H. L. BRANHAM ENTERTAINED Friday afternoon February 3rd the faculty of jamestown Grade and high school entertained MRS. HERBERT L. BRANHAM with a tea. MR. BRANHAM has been a member of the faculty all the year, while MRS. BRANHAM has been teaching in Barren County, her school closed last Friday and she joined M Branham here. After refreshments were served, MRS. BRANHAM was presented with some very lovely and useful gifts. PERSONALS MR. G.F. EASTHAM, prominent Esto merchant , had business in Jamestown Friday. MR. J.H. FORD, of Karlus, was a business caller at this office while in town Saturday. MR. H.O. STEPHENS, of Bart, was a business visitor to Jamestown Saturday. R.E. LEE, of Monticello, was a recent visitor to our city. MR. and MRS. G. A. DABNEY and son, SHELBY, are visiting relatives in Indianapolis, Indiana, this week. J.C. HOLT, merchant at Windsor, was a visitor in Jamestown Monday. G.C. AARON , of Moore"s Schoolhouse, had business in town Monday. DR. E. A. DUNBAR, of Lexington was the weekend guest of relatives in Jamestown. BILL WATTS, of Columbia, representing the Cookville Monument co. Cookville tenn, was here Monday. CLARENCE STEPHENS and wife, of bowling green, MRS. LULA HELM, and J.C. JONES, of Montpelier, were business visitores to Jamestown one day last week. MRS. J.K.BUTCHER, and daughter , MISS ELLA, had business in town a few days ago H.E. DUTTON, JOE COE and CECIL KINNETT made a business trip to the South last week. They passed through several states and came back by way of St. Louis and thru Illinois to kentucky. ALVIN LEWIS, of Columbia, agent for Aetna gas and Penzipp products, were here Saturday. DR. P.V. BALLOU was here from Rowena Wednesday. GARNETT M. RANSDELL, former project engineer for Russell county was recently visiting friends in Russell County, He is now (Missing) at Campsville, Ky While here MR. RADSDELL made friends and it is always a pleasure to see him and MRS. RANSDELL when they visit our town. County Court Clerk MARSHALL DIXON has been very ill at his home on West Cumberland Ave, but was better at last reports. MR. L. L. DAVIS, of Karlus, suffered the loss of a thumb while operating a small power saw at his home Tuesday. SEWELLTON NOTES There is no serious sickness but quite a few are ailing, some with mumps, some with colds. Those who are lingering are GRADY LAWLESS, son of B.A. LAWLESS, and MRS. LIZZIE LAWLESS, wife of BEN LAWLESS and MRS. CHELCY BARGER, who are not improving very much. Everybody else seems to be enjoying the passing winter days and getting the benefit of their labors. There are many cases of colds and some cases of flu in this section. MISCELLANEOUS SHOWER On Tuesday afternoon January 31, a miscellaneous shower was given at the home of MR. and MRS. ERNEST BARGER in honor of their neice, MRS. ROY H. BARGER. Those present were: Mesdames T.A. HAY, J.M. VOILS, EXEREZA BUNCH, THEO BUNCH, ERNEST BARGER, L. B. GUTHRIE and A. HARRIS MISSES CORDIA PIERCY, PAULINE APPLEBY, LORINE HARRIS and GERTRUDE BLAIR. Those who sent gifts were MRS. O.D. SMITH, MRS. CASSIE WOLFORD, MRS. PEARL APPLEBY, MRS. H. E. PRUITT, MRS. FRANK SMITH, MRS. PASCHAL HARRIS, MISS ETHEL and IDA BUNCH and OLA PIERCY. The shower was sponsored by MRS. T.A. HAYS and MRS. PASCHAL HARRIS. MRS. BARGER received many nice and useful gifts. Refreshments were served and all had an enjoable time. BETHEL NEWS Health of this community is fairly good. Some of the people have colds. UNCLE JIM BURTON has been pretty sick, but he is up now. MR. and MRS. NEUBA WILLETT and family were Monday night visitors at BRYANT STEPHENS. MR. HOLLIS COFFEY bought a horse at the stock sale last Wednesday. Sunday school is progressing nicely at Bethel MR. and MRS. MERIL LUTTREL are visiting at Eunice Ky Messers. H. S. AMOS and E.R. STEPHENS, MR. AVERY AUTHER and MISS EXIE STEPHENS spent a few days last week with their brother in Cisco , Ill. They had an enjoyable trip. Messrs. OVAS and HOLLIS COFFEY were at BRYANT STEPHENS a while Tuesday night. WILMER DIXON has hired to BRYANT STEPHENS for this month. BRO. JOE WOOLDRIDGE was through here last Tuesday selling shoes, clothing, and fruit trees. MRS. LURA STEPHENS, of Columbia, spent last week end with her parents MR. and MRS. B. STEPHENS MR. and MRS. CLARENCE McKINLEY and family took supper with MR. and MRS. E.R. COFFEY last Sunday night. Here is wishing The News much success. UNION CHAPEL Health of this community is very good except a few that have colds. MRS. TINA SHEARER is some better MRS. IDA LOY, who is badly crippled with rheumatism, is getting along very well. MRS. CLORA MANN, of Longbottom, was in this part Tuesday and wednesday for the purpose of organizing a women"s missionary society but oweing to the bad weather, she failed to get around to see all the people but we hope the weather will be better when she comes back in March and everybody will cooperate and help make this society interesting, which I am sure will be helpful and upbuilding to the community. CORA SHEARER and daughter IRENE, were in town Tuesday to see the dentist. MR. and MRS. EDWARD ANTLE were business visitors to jamestown Thursday. MISSES CLORA and EULA MAY LAWLESS spent Saturday night at ROLLIN SHEARER's. MR. NORMAN ANTLE, of Jamestown was visiting with his folks here Sunday. MRS. HELM, Sunday Because of the recent heavy rains, Cumberland river is higher than it has been for many months It is over most of the bottom now and is still rising. CAMPBELL exe. ONO ITEMS Health of our community about as usual and most everybody able to be about. There has been so much rain that farmers are getting a little nervous about farm work. JASON B. WILSON and REV. O.L. POPPLEWELL, our stockmen, still make three or four markets each week, taking out stock and bringing in some most every trip. MR. POPPLEWELL purchased four wild heifers at the stock yards last week, and it took him about three days to get them all home. I think he wants to see Colonel GATEWOOD, the Rodeo man , when he gets ready to sell, as he thinks he has what he wants. it took all the boys in the neighborhood to round them up when he brought them in. We have had the largest creek and river we have had for some time . the back water was up near Owl Hollow in Wolf Creek. JASON B. WILSON swapped a young pair of mules to A. L. HIGGINBOTHAM for two large draft horses last week. We were sorry to learn of the serious illness of our old friend SHERMAN WHITTLE, who lives on Polstom Ridge near here, his sister MRS. ASA HILL, and neice MRS. HOLLIS HIGGENBOTHAM, were at his bedside last week. PERSONELS ???
