VERNON HOLT, TAX COMMISSIONER DIED SUNDAY NIGHT, FEB. 19th On February 19th at 11:45 P.M. VERNON HOLT, well known citizen of Jamestown and present County Tax Commissioner of this County passed peacefully away at the Lawrence Hotel where he had gone for treatment. MR. HOLT had been in very poor health for several years and for the last year had been much worse. He recently took treatment for two months at SPRAGUE'S hospital , Lexington, Ky but even this treatment seemed to do no good. He returned home from the hospital eight days before he died. There is probaly no one in Russell County who had more friends than VERNON HOLT. His kind disposition, his consideration of others and his readiness to assist others in time of need will be remembered by his friends for many years to come. He was a member of the Christian Church at Jamestown and it can truthfully be said of him that he did practice those principles which is in harmony with his teaching of the Holy Bible ---MISSING quite a bit-----His remains were laid to rest with impressive ceremonies by both of these orders. Not withstanding the very cold bad day, one of the largest crowds were in attendance that we have ever witnessed at a funeral in Jamestown, Circuit Court being in session recessed until the funeral services were over. VERNON HOLT will be sadly missed by his relatives and friends and his place will be hard to fill. NOTICE IN REGARD TO TAX COMMISSINERS OFFICE Since the death of my good friend, MR. VERNON HOLT, I have had many applications for his vacancy, some holding certificates and some not any. So I feel like ( as much as I hate to at this time) I should say something. Having been a deep friend of MR. HOLT'S , I have been exceedingly sorrowful over his condition for his months. I was deeply grieved to learn of his passing he was my friend and I was his friend. To his bereaved relatives and host of friends I extend my heartfelt sympathy. ---Missing-- to be an honor to him and appropriate to wait a little while before discussing a man to take his place. I suppose it falls my lot to make the appointment to the vacancy untill his successor is duly qualified by according to law. I want each person to give me time to thoroughly study the matter, and after this is done I will do my duty without fear or favor politically. I might say this: This is the most important office in the county if one does his duty. My friend did his untill he was unable to do so. In picking a successor to his vacancy, I will take into consideration requests made to me, the taxpayers of Russell County, and each applicant, and after giving the matter much consideration for the general welfare and benefit of the taxpayers of this county I will appoint someone to serve untill the next election. In this I will, as in all matters, consider my friends and Taxpayers of Russell county. Nothing will be considered at this time as I do not feel like discussing the matter this early. Sincerally yours PORTER DUNBAR, J. R. R. C COOPER TO MAKE RACE FOR GOVERNOR JUDGE JOHN S COOPER has been urged by Republicans high in the council of the party to make the race for Governor and indicated today he would formally announce for the office in a few days. his many friends in Pulaski County are confident the party could not offer a stronger or more deserving candidate, Sommerset Commonwealth AN APPOLOGY WAS DUE We the people of Irvin"s store , and the entire State of Kentucky, electrocuted SYLVESTER WARNER, but before we did it, we shouldn"t have let him go without an apology. We forgot to kill him and left him waiting for his fate in the death house for four and one-half years. To Irvins Store it appears that WARNER already had been punished far more cruel than the law intends. Our law contemplated sudden death in the electric chair for SYLVESTER, but we made him to suffer the torture of being dragged out anytime for four and one-half years in the shadow of the chair. Certainly we of Kentucky owed him an humble appology as we led him to the electric chair, we should have said, " MR. WARNER we"re very sorry to have made you suffer so long, we know how painful it must have been, but we all got tied up in politics and forgot all about you, but at last we"ve gotten around to it and are putting an end to the whole thing. Irvins store beleives that if we would have made this apology. "SYLVESTER would have said, thank you, people of Kentucky, as he composed himself in the chair. " It is a great relief to sit at last in the electric chair. " G.C. GOSSER POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENTS We are authorized to announce OTIS C.
