THE RUSSELL COUNTY NEWS MARCH 2 1939 Typed as piblished and submitted By Laura Frost Wright ____________________________________________________________________________ RUSSELL COUNTY REPUBLICANS SHOULD STAND TOGETHER FOR JUDGE PHELPS Russell County is waking up to the fact it has long been over-looked in the matter of district offices. In other counties of this judicial district the feeling is strong that this county is entitled to recognition this year. We have waited long enough. In this county I have received all the encouragement in the race for Circuit Judge that any one could wish. In other counties I have received more encouragement than I expected. this early. The campaign has not yet begun but it will begin in good time. I have only one request to make of the Republicans of russell county. stand firm and let no schemes or rumors divide us. Then help me all you can to prevent our case to the Republicans of other counties. Some say it will not be an aesy race for me if five candidates run for Circuit judge. I am not asking for an easy race. Just let me carry the news to other counties that we are united hare and the result will be all we could ask. We can bring home the nomination to russell county. MONTPELIER ROAD SHOULD BE IMPROVED The people of this community are getting interested about some road down this way. We mean the old Jamestown and Columbia road from esto to Montpelie r. This piece of road is the only part of the old road that is not improved, a distance of about 4 1/2 miles and the people of this part of Russell county would be greatly benefited if this road was improved. Adair County has two roads to the Russell County line down this way, one at Montpelier and one at crocus and Russell county none. When we have business at jamestown we have to go to Columbia and then to jamestown by Russell Springs, a distance of about 32 miles and we are only about 8 or 9 miles from jamestown if we had a direct road. The road from Montpelier to esto is in bad condition the whole year as it hasnt been worked for three years or longer. We pay our tax as well as the people in other parts of the county that have roads. We sell no stock at russell springs because we go through Columbia to get to russell Springs and we always stop at Columbia. We do not buy anything at Jamestown or Russell springs that we need on the farm such as fencing, roofing, and grass seed because we are nearer Columbia when you consider the condition of the road. We hope to see the four and one half miles of road from Esto to Monpelier improved this year. L.V.
