THE RUSSELL COUNTY NEWS MARCH 23, 1939 Typed as published and Submitted By Laura Frost Wright ____________________________________________________________________________ MISSIONARY MEETING AT RUSSELL SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH On last Thursday, March 16th the first quarterly Association meeting of the Women"s Missionary Union of Baptist Churches of Russell County met with the Russell Springs Baptist Church. An interesting program was rendered by the following persons. 1. Address by Mrs. ADDIE F. OWENS. Interesting talks were given by Mrs. ISON, Mrs. PRUITT and Miss WILDA TILGHMAN, State Missionary workers. 2. Mrs. SHEPARD of Popular grove. 3. Mrs. EDGAR LACT, Jamestown 4. Miss LILLIAN RICHARDS, Mrs. EARL RIPPETOE, Mrs. EMILY ROBERTSON, Mrs. EULA ANTLE and Mrs. T.D. FLANAGAN, of Russell Springs. 5. Duet by Miss EULA RIPPETOE and Mrs. WELBY CRAVENS A nice dinner was served at the noon hour by the Russell Springs Society which was greatly enjoyed by all present. The next quarterly meeting of the W.M.U. will be held at the Jamestown baptist Church during the month of June, the exact date will be announced later. MISSIONARY SOCIETY MET WITH MRS. BUTLER THURSDAY The young Women"s Missionary Society of the Methodist Church held their regular meeting at the home of Mrs. PHILLIP BUTLER on Thursday, March 16. The subject was "Social outgrowth of the Home" Those members present were Mesdames CHESTER DUNBAR, CLOVIE LEACH, EARL HADLEY, WALLACE DUNBAR, ANDREW MEADOWS, and RUDOLPH DICKERSON and Miss EVA LEACH. Mrs. HOWARD O"BANION was a guest at the meeting. After the program delightful refreshments were served by the hostess. POPULAR YOUNG LADY QUITE ILL Miss GRACE LEACH, young daughter of Sheriff A.W. LEACH is very sick at this time GRACE is very popular with her school mates and the people in general on account of her very kind disposition, and we wish for her a speedy recovery. RECOVERING FROM OPERATION Mr. HERMAN GRIDER, son of Mr. WILLIE GRIDER, who lives in Indianapolis is recovering from an operation for gallstones and appendicitis in an Indianapolis Hospital. It will be remembered that mrs. GRIDER is the daughter of Mr. E.C. HUMBLE, of French Valley. FUNERAL OF POPULAR YOUNG LADY HELD MARCH 20th Miss MARY E. BLANKENSHIP, age 21 years and 15 days, daughter of Mr. LUTHER BLANKENSHIP of the Sewellton Community, passed away at the home of her father on March 19th at 5:30 A.M. a victim of Diabetus and flu. REVIVAL AT THE METHODIST POSTPONED UNTILL MARCH 26 On account of the illness of Bro. RAYBURN, the revival which was to have begun last Monday night, at the methodist Church in jamestown was postponed untill Sunday night, march 26th BIRTHDAY DINNER GIVEN FOR MRS. SHEARER A wonderful dinner was given in the home of Mrs. TINA SHEARER, March 19, in celebration of her birthday which finds her 64 years old. Ones who were present were Mr. and Mrs. NATHAN ANTLE, Mr. and Mrs. BANFORD HADLEY, Mrs LAURA KIMBLER, Mr. and Mrs. PORTER WOOLDRIDGE and two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. ROY SHEARER and children, Mr. and mrs. EWELL TILLER, Mrs. PEARL ANTLE and three children, Mrs. STELLA HELM and daughter, LAWRENCE HADLEY, COLLIN HILL, JAMES SHEARER and Miss MARTHA SHEARER. Mrs. SHEARER received several nice presents. Pictures were taken in the afternoon. All left in afternoon wishing Mrs. SHEARER many more Happy Birthdays. RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT In memory of Brother WILLIAM E. BLANKENSHIP who died March 17, 1939. Once again a brother Mason having completed the designs written for him on life"s trestle board, has passed through the portals of Eternity and entered the Grand Lodge of the new Jerusalem and hath received as his reward, the white stone with the new name written thereon. And whereas, the all wise and merciful Master of the Universe has called from labor our beloved and respected brother, and he having been a true and faithful member of our beloved order. Therefore, be it resolved that Russell Lodge No. 284 F. & A. M. of Jamestown, Ky in testimony of her loss, be draped in mourning for thirty days, and that we tender to the family of our deceased brother our sincere condolence in their deep affliction and that a copy of these be sent to the family. GRIDER RETURNS FROM DANVILLE HOSPITAL Mr. WILLIE GRIDER, of the French Valley community who has been in the Danville Hospital for several weeks, returned home last Sunday not much improved. REV. ROSSON HONORED REV. ALVIN G. ROSSOM has received an invitation to attend the Rural church and Community Conference to be held at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn, April 17-21 The invitation was extended to a group of 150 outstanding ministers serving the rural areas from all denominations. REV. ROSSON was chosen from the methodist Church. Columbia times. JUDGE DUNBAR FLU VICTIM County Judge PORTER DUNBAR has been confined to his home for the past few days, a victim of the flu. MAYOR SMITH OF HARLAN ANNOUNCES FOR GOV. Dr. L.O. SMITH, Mayor of harlan , Ky for past ten years, has announced his candidacy for the republican nomination for governor. this makes two Republican candidates for this office from the ninth District, Judge JOHN S. COOPER, of Somerset, Ky, having announced his candidacy several weeks ago. SUFFERS BROKEN ARM Mrs. LEONIA WESLEY fell the first of the week and broke her arm. At last reports she was getting along fairly well. THE PASSING OF A GOOD WOMAN MARCH 18th Mrs. EMMA L. WILSON, beloved wife of Mr. S.W. WILSON of Russell Springs, passed peacefully away at her home Saturday March 18, age 69 years, three months and 11 days. She was the daughter of mr. and mrs. SAMUEL COE, both of whom passed away many years ago. HUGH KEAN LOSES BARN BY FIRE, TUESDAY HUGH KEAN, of the christian Chapel Community, lost his barn and its contents by fire Tuesday afternoon. The building was practically new and besides the building, a lot of corn , two corn drills, harness and other things were destroyed by the fire. The loss was quite heavy, as Mr. KEAN did not carry any insurance. YOUNG GASKIN DOING FAIRLY WELL The young son of FINLEY GASKIN of the Welfare section, who was taken last week to a hospital in Louisville, was doing fairly well at last reports. He was suffering complications resulting from a broken arm. Mrs. OTHA RICHARDS ILL Mrs. OTHA RICHARDS has been quite ill at her home one mile north of town for the past few days. OLD SOD PAYS LOUIS BROWN, Christian County Negro farmer, received $215 for 880 pounds of tobacco produced on seven-tenths of an acre of land that had been in grass and clover for ten years. Tobacco from seven-tenths of an acre that had been in sod only two years brought only $65. RAILROAD PRESIDENT, NATIVE OF CLINTON COUNTY , DIES SAMUEL T. BLEDSOE, 70, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway since 1933, died in Chicago last Wednesday. A native of Clinton County, he was a cousin of J.P. CLAYTON here and visited Columbia a few years ago. A well-known lawyer, he was also a director of Railway Express Agency and the Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Company. His early education was in a private school in Jamestown, and the Southern Normal School and Business college at Bowling green. BLEDSOE'S first job was that of a school teacher in Clinton County. --Adair County news DIED SUDDENLY WHILE TRAVELING IN INDIANA BRO. ITELGEORGE, of Indiana, who will be remembered as the singer at a revival meeting conducted at the courthouse in this city a few months ago by CLIFFORD SPURLOCK, died suddenly a few days ago while traveling along the road in Indiana with Rev. SPURLOCK. NOTE: This obit is missing a lot, I will try to get as much as I can as there is a lot of names here--Laura W.E. BLANKENSHIP DIED AT HIS HOME FRIDAY, MARCH 17 W.E. BLANKENSHIP, who lived about four miles west of town, passed away at his home Friday morning, March 17th, age 88 years three months and eleven days. He was found unconscious at his home Wednesday morning by Mr. IVEL WOOLDRIDGE, his nephew, but later regained consciousness and was thought to be getting along fairly well until death came suddenly on the date above. UNCLE DICK as he was called, lived a quiet life alone since the death of his last wife. He was twice married his wives having preceded him to the grave several years ago. HERRIFORD and B.S. KINNETT. L.W. FOLEY, Master of Jamestown Lodge, conducted the Masonic services in a very impressive manner. Brother BLANKENSHIP leaves one brother, Mr. ANSEL BLANKENSHIP of Horseshoe bottom and one sister, Mrs. WILLIAM WOOLDRIDGE, who lives near Jamestown besides some nieces and nephews. It suffices us to say that a splendid citizen has passed on. H.E. PRUITT was in charge of the remains. OLGA NEWS Hello everybody!! Here we come again. How is everybody? Most people around here are complaining. Mr. HENRY HILL is not so well today. Mr. E.G. COFFEY is some better at this writing. Mrs. KITTIE HADLEY, who has had a severe case of eresypelas is up again. Miss HATTIE LAWLESS who has been staying with Mrs. KITTIE HADLEY returned home Monday. Mrs. ROZET HELM has not set up any a while. It seems like she does have one time. We hope for her a speedy recovery. Farmers are busy plowing getting ready for corn and grass sowing. REV. LLOYD COLLINS will preach at Union Chapel on Saturday night before the fifth Sunday in April. Come and bring someone with you. The death Angel visited the home of Mr. LUTHER BLANKENSHIP and claimed for its own their daughter, Miss MARY BLANKENSHIP. We join their many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives. Success to the news and its readers. PERSONALS Mr. COSBY COFFEY, prominent Creelsboro farmer was in town friday and added his name to our subscription list. Mr. L.G. BERNARD and son, BAYARD, were visitors to Columbia Saturday. Mr. J.C. CUNNINGHAM , of the Owenstown community had business in town Monday. GEORGE ROYSE and wife, of Roy, Adair county, were here one day last week to see Dr. LAWRENCE Rev. B. E. SETTLES, of Middleburg, paster of Middleburg, Liberty and Popular grove Baptist churches, accompanied by some of his children, was here Saturday to see the dentist. Mrs. LAURA KIMBLER, of Sewellton, widow of the late OLIVER KIMBLER was in town one day last week. Mrs. KIMBLER has just returned from a pleasant visit with friends to florida. Rev. JOE STOTTS, of Sparksville Adair county, former paster of the local Baptist church here and at russell springs, was a recent business visitor to our town. Rev. STOTTS is at present time pastor of four good churches in Adair county and getting along fine in all church work. Mr. E. (DINK) MANN, prosperous farmer of Jackman Bottom, near Creelsboro, was a visitor to the county seat last Saturday. Mr. L. P. WILLIAMS, prominent merchant and farmer, of Sewellton had business in town not long since. Messrs. W.W. OWENS and son NID, were callers in Jamestown Monday. Hon. WM J. CHUMBLEY who is in the race for Commonwealth"s Attorney, was attending the opening of circuit Court in Burkesville Monday. JOHNNIE REXROAT was here from Webbs Cross Roads the first of the week. County Attorney R.E. LLOYD was a visitor to Burkesville Monday. Miss ADA KELSEY, of this city, was the week-end guest of Mr. and mrs. J.D. WHITE, of Morehead , Kentucky Mr. E.C. HUMBLE, of French Valley was a visitor in our city Tuesday. Mr. and mrs. M.F. UPTON, of Eli, were callers in Jamestown Monday. Rev, SHERMAN CHILTON, of Irvin"s Store, was a recent visitor toour city Mr. OTHO BLAIR, Buhner fertilizer salesman was here from Eli the first of the week. Mr. C.E. GUTHRIE, of Monticello, was here calling on the merchants the first of the week. Mr. O. O. GARRETT, of Horseshoe Bottoms was in town Tuesday and while here renewed his subscription to the news. Mr. HARRISON BERNARD of the Eller Community left last Friday for cincinnati, Ohio where he has employment. Mr. LUTHER CHUMBLEY, of Dorena was an appreciated caller at this office while in town Wednesday. Mrs. LISSIE BENNETT and daughter NAOMI, and Mrs. EDD SHARP, of bernard ridge were shopping in our city Tuesday. Mrs. ADA HUBBARD of this place visited her mother, Mrs. A.L. COOPER of Cabell Wayne County the latter part of last week. Mrs. COOPER suffeered a stroke of paralysis a few days ago and is in bad condition. N.E. OAKES of Jabez, had business in Jamestown Wednesday Hon LILBURN PHELPS candidate for Circuit Judge attended court in burksville Tuesday.
