THE RUSSELL COUNTY NEWS APRIL 20, 1939 Typed as published and submitted By Laura Frost Wright ____________________________________________________________________________ JOHNSON GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE FOR MURDER OF WIFE MILLER JOHNSON, itinerant minister, was convicted in the Fayette Circuit Court at Lexington, last Friday, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the second trial for the murder of his wife on October 13, 1937. JOHNSON spent nine months in the death house in Eddyville penitentiary, following his first trial, before the Court of Appeals reversed a death sentence. WELLS-FOLEY WEDDING APRIL 8 Mr. ROBERT FOLEY, 51, of Webbs Cross Roads, and Miss LORA WELLS, 17, daughter of mr. and Mrs. MURRELL WELLS, Windsor , were married April 8 in Russell County--Somerset Journal RIGHTS-OF- WAY FOR ONO ROAD SECURED County Attorney R.E. LLOYD and PORTER DUNBAR, County Judge, together with KENNETH LAWLESS, spent much time last week securing rightof ways on the ono road. WPA is reported as getting ready to start some time this week. Mr. S.C. TAYLOR was here Monday and is setting up the crew for this road. WITH THE SICK OTHA RICHARDS, who has been sick at his home one mile north of town, is reported as improving. Mrs. SARAH DUNBAR, who has been confined to her room for several weeks, remains about the same. Jailor J.C. STEPHENSON has returned from the hospital at glasgow very much improved, not yet ready to be out. Little BOBBY PORTER, son of CHESTER PORTER, who was run over by a car, near BOB HAM"S place some time ago, is improving at the Baptist Hospital in Louisville. It will be remembered that both arms and legs were broken. HENRY BERNARD, an old and respected citizen, who resides on mile west of town and who has been feeble for some time is reported to be improving. Miss GRACE LEACH, daughter of Sheriff A. W. LEACH, who has been seriously ill at her home in Jamestown is, we are glad to report, improving at this time. Mrs. ELIZABETH BARNETT, who lives in the Scott"s Chapel community, fell a few days ago breaking her leg. She is in serious condition. She is very old and troubles of this kind are slow to heal. We wish for her an early recovery. Mrs. BASCUM DUNBAR is reported as being ill at her home on Virginia Ave. The infant son of Mrs. HADA OLDHAM WILSON has been very sick at the home of her father Mr. JOHN OLDHAM, in Jamestown but is reported better at this time. The young son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. CLAUDE BECK, who have been sick, are better at this writing. Mrs. MATTIE ANDREWS is reported as being quite poorly at her home on West Cumberland Avenue. Mrs. GEORGE GASKINS remains about the same. She has been in poor health for a long time. Mr. F.F. COOK, prominent hardware merchant, is reported to be quite ill at his home in this city. His many friends hope that he may soon recover. CAPE-THOMAS WEDDING IN TENNESSEE On Wednesday evening April 12th, Mr. HULEY THOMAS and Miss MABEL CAPE, both of Bryan , Ky eeloped to Tennessee and were quietly married. They were accompanied by Messrs. CARLOS MANN abd OTHA BLANKENSHIP. Mr. THOMAS is a son of Mr. W.J. THOMAS and the bride is a daughter of Mr. WILL CAPE. We understand they are an exceptionally fine young couple and the news extends to them best wishes for a happy and prosperous life as they journey down life"s way together. RUSSELL COUNTY BOYS GO TO CCC Twelve more boys left for the CCC camp Tuesday morning. They are as follows: FINAS RAY CARNES, CLYDE WHITTLE, JUNIOR MOORE, ELMER MILLER, ELMORE KINNETT, CLEVELAND GRIDER, LEE STEPHENS, HAROLD BENNETT, ARTHUR GRIDER, HULEN FLANAGAN, JESSIE L. PIERCE and MONT L. ACREE. Russell is getting her share of boys in the camps due to the fact that we have a certifying agent. B.E. FOLEY ERECTING NEW MILL HOUSE Mr. B.E. FOLEY, of jamestown is erecting a new mill house on his property near where the flour mill is located. When this building is completed Mr. FOLEY intends to install an up to date feed mill with the latest improved mixer. This feed mill is the only one of the kind in Russell County and will be a benefit to the people of Russell and adjoining counties. Mr. FOLEY is one of the best millers to be found anywhere and he is always looking forward to the best interests of the farmers.m He is assisted in the construction by his sons, E.E. , DARIS and VELMER FOLEY. HILDEGRADE WEDDING WINS STATE SPELLING BEE The State Spelling bee, held in Louisville last thursday, April 13, was won by HILDEGRADE WEDDING, 12 years old, of Fancy farm, Graves County. HILDEGRADE correctly spelled the word " sideral" after her nearest competitor missed it, and then spelled correctly "Sapphire" to clinch the title. Her prize is a trip to Washington for herself and a chaperon and right to represent kentucky in the national spelling bee on May 29. ANN LAFOLLETTE of Louisville won second place and a prize of $100 in the 15th annual state contest. HELEN ADAMS of Winchester was third and KENNETH TOONEY of garrad county was fourth. HALF ACRE NEWS Health of this community is fairly good. Mrs. ANNIE COFFEY, who has been sick for a few weeks is some better now. LIZZIE CLAYTON doesn"t seem to improve much. Mr. EVERETT KEAN, of scott"s Chapel, spent Saturday night with his mother Mrs. MAUDE KEAN Misses REBA and IDA B. STEARNS was the Sunday visitors of Miss DOROTHY MANN. Miss PAULINE WILSON spent Saturday night with her sister Mrs. JESSE DUTTON, of jamestown. Mrs. LIZZIE MANN and mrs. DELLER ABSHER were the Sunday afternoon guests of Mrs. ANNIE COFFEY. Mrs. JESSE DUTTON, of jamestown , spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and mrs. JOHNNIE WILSON. Miss ELMA EDMONDS, student in Lindsey Wilson Junior College Columbia spent last week with her parents, Mr. and mrs.
