William Johnson was educated at West Point Military Academy, and his attainments in mathematics were of the highest order. He was one of the most prominent and influential democrats in Scott county, and was elected to the Kentucky state legislature almost continuously from 1830 - 1849. He was a man of great force of character; his amiable nature and humane sympathy made him ever the friend of the unfortunate, as the many who came to him for assistance or counsel could attest. He was a blessing to the poor of his neighborhood, and loved and honored by all. 1. WILLIAM JOHNSON , GEN. MORRISON: Posted by bjd on Sun, 11 Jul 1999 Surname: MORRISON, JOHNSON Judge John G. Morrison, coal dealer; Georgetown; was born near West Union in Adams County, Ohio October 23, 1810. He was left an orphan at a very early age and lived for a time with an uncle, David Morrison at Washington, Kentucky; he came to Kentucky at the age of eight years. He moved to Maysville in 1822, and thence to Lexington in 1824, with another uncle, Richieson Morrison, a merchant; he was in that city when Lafayette made his visit there, and remembers well the man whose name is prominent in history. He lived in Lexington, acting as clerk in his uncle's dry goods store until 1830, when he moved to Frankfort and there opened a like store of his own, which continued two years. In 1832 he went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was salesman in a wholesale dry goods house for two years, when he returned to Lexington again, doing business for himself. In 1836, at Great Crossings, Scott County, Ky., he married Miss Nancy B., daughter of Gen. William Johnson, and the following year went to Phillips County, Ark, to plant cotton, but was not successful in this new adventure, owing to the overflow at that time. He returned to Kentucky, living at Great Crossings from 1841 to 1857; from 1842 to 1846 he rode as deputy sheriff of Scott County; he followed the occupation of farming and rope spinning from 1847 to 1856; in 1857, he moved to Georgetown and has since that year resided in the house he first made his home. In 1852 he was elected county judge of Scott County and served four years, his election being made by the Union Party and without opposition. In 1858 he was appointed United States Gauger for the 7th District of Kentucky, and for three years served in that capacity, since which time he has engaged in the lumber and coal business, his yard being located on Hamilton street. He is a man who can adapt himself to many kinds of business, and as a citizen is much esteemed. He has four children living and two deceased. He is a Free Mason and in politics was a Whig and later a Republican. He has one brother and two sisters living. His father was born in Ireland and was a farmer; he died about 1818. JOHNSON , COL.: Colonel Jilson P. Johnson, previous to the late civil war, resided near Laconia, Arkansas, engaged in the quiet life of a southern cotton planter, and was one of the state's most substantial citizens - a staunch and lifelong democrat - and was elected to the state Legislature. He was elected a delegate to the Arkansas State Convention in 1860, when that state seceded from the Union. Was Lieutenant Colonel in the Inspector General's department, of the Confederate government. Subsequently was proprietor and manager of the Galt House in Louisville, KY, where he came by his courtly and agreeable manners, one of the most popular hotel men of the country. He resigned his position at the Galt House to take charge of the Maxwell House in Nashville, Tenn. and was proprietor of that house at the time of his death. More About JILSON P.
