Surname: McClain, Gray, Payne, Scott Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. ROBERT McCLAIN was born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1822. His father, Thomas McClain, was a son of John and Rachel McClain, and was born in Virginia in 1790. When about twenty years old he came to Kentucky, settled in Shelby County, farmed, and died in 1853. He married Miss Elizabeth Gray, daughter of Robert and Mary Gray, the former a native of Ireland. Mrs. McClain was born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1790, and died in 1851. They were both members of the Baptist Church at Southville, Shelby County, where they are buried. Robert McClain is the sixth of thirteen children. He has successfully followed farming through life, and is the owner of about 700 acres, near Little Mount, in Spencer County. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and of the Masonic fraternity. In 1859 he married Miss Isabel M. Payne, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Scott) Payne, of Shelby County, Ky.; Samuel was a farmer and a son of John Payne of Shelby County. Mrs. Payne was a daughter of Andrew Scott of Shelby County. Mrs. McClain was born in 1837, and died August 14, 1882, and had been a member of the Baptist Church ten or twelve years. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom preceded her in death, and four who survive: Mary E., Hillard C. (deceased), Lillie F., Thomas W. (deceased), Murtie B., Robert S. and James E. (deceased).
