He was born in Virginia and died in Shelby County, Ky. He served in the Revolutionary War and applied for a pension in Shelby County, Ky. on 30 Jun 1830. His application referred to his service from June 1775 in the 12th Virginia Regiment under Colonel James Woods, Captain Stephen Ashley or Ashby. At the time (1820) he had no children living with him, but had three grandchildren whose mother was dead. Their ages were 12, 9 and 8 years.
