HOWARD was born November 12, 1837, in Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and in 1867 removed to Simpson County, where he has since resided. In 1861 he enlisted in the Ninth Kentucky Infantry, in which service he remained three years and three months. His father, John W. Howard, a native of Monroe County, was born 1798, was a merchant and hotel keeper, and died in 1838. He was the son of Kit Howard, a native of. Virginia, who died in Monroe County. John W. married Martha Wilson, of Monroe County (born in 1801, now living),and their offspring are Harriet (Dodson), John W. and Jane (Taylor), twins, Rebecca (Shields and Goodman), Sarah E. (Dunn), Christopher C., Mary A. (Chism) and Joseph P. The last named had fair opportunities for obtaining an education, and is a reading man. He married, April 11, 1858, Virginia, daughter of Hardin D. and Susan (Murray) Celsor, of Allen County (born January 15, 1838), and to them have been born William T., Joseph P., John C. ,James M. (dead), Samuel D. (dead), Mattamorselous, Mary C. and Thomas T. (dead). Mr. Howard engaged in the saddle and harness business in Fountain Run, Kentucky for fifteen years. He is now a farmer, owning 250 acres of productive land, in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., also a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Republican. Joseph Petty Howard is the son of John William Howard Sr. who is the son of Christopher (Kit) Howard who was the son of Obadiah Howard.
