According to South Central Ky Historical and Genealogical Society,
Vol 1 #4 Jan 1974, page 7: from Monroe County Clerk's Office, 
Tompkinsville, contributed by Eva Coe Peden, Glasgow Ky, 
Joseph P. Howard was a private in Company A, 9th Regiment, 
Kentucky Volunteers (Union Army).  Enlisted 
September 25, 1861, discharged December 15, 1865.

This was verified by the National Archives Civil War  
muster records, Washingtion, D.C. per my request 2000.
