WILL OF LEONARD WEST SR. January 15, 1840 State of Kentucky, Simpson County Sct. In the name of God Amen. I, Leonard West of Simpson County, Ky., being eighty two years of age on the 12th day of August, knowing that it is appointed for men to die make this my last will revoking all others hereafter made by me in manner and disposing memory. I give my soul to God who formed it. I will that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid. I will that my beloved wife retain the furniture of my house and all of my out houses, the house and kitchen furniture, my sorrel mare, two cows, and calves, and slaves Eliza and Jackson for the rest of her natural life, and it is my will that the Negroes Jackson and Eliza be under management of my son Fielding B. West for the use after the Dec'd of my wife, agreeable to an article held by ??? Herndon between myself and my son F. B. West. Whereas Lucy Fike of Simpson County, Kentucky by her last will which is of record gave me a Negro boy Armistead during my life and after my death I was to give to the bodily heir of my daughter Susan Peter, and I gave the said Negro to James Peter about the year 1822, and the said James husband of Susan Peter by my direction sell said Negro and the proceeds of sale resulted in procuring certain tracts of land in of Hickman County, Kentucky. Some of which land said Peter did sell in his life time for the benefit of said Susan's heirs, and there forming a balance in my possessions which I in turn was to patent and leave in trust with my son F. B. West for the heirs of said Susan Peter. I give to Susan Peter NW quarter section, township one, range six W and SE quarter section 24 township one, range six W and NW quarter section 17 town 4, range 4, W and SW quarter section 27, town 1, range 6 W. I give to Fielding Peter SW quarter section, town 1 range 6 and SW quarter of section 41, range 6 W and SW quarter of section of town 4, range 4 and NW quarter of section ??? 6 W, and the above named heirs of Susan Peters will receive said land and receipt to be made to Armistead Mill if the will not? my will is to my son F. B. West to sell the contained lands pay and of all claims of the children of Susan Peter. I think it necessary to not will anything respecting Agnes Waddy as she already received her portion of said lands. Whereas Lucy Fike did by her last will give me a Negro boy Ned and requested that at my death I should liberate him, this will authorizes that my executors after my death to liberate the said Ned and if he wants to go to Liberia he is to be given over to the Colonization Society and if he wishes to remain in the state, this will appoints my son F. B. West, his lawful agent to take care of him and to attend to all of his dealings and request he not be imposed upon. It is my request that after my death all of my property and personal items not heretofore disposed of by this will, be equally divided amongst my five children by lot or sale to Polly Herndon, Fielding B. West, Amos S. West, William West, and Susan West. I will that after my death my wife Tabitha and my son F. B. West receive and free sell my corn at a fair valuation, and after my death my daughter Polly Herndon receive my slave girl Ellen at valuation and Susan Peter receive my girl Mary at valuation, and my will is that none of my Negroes be separated from their wives, or husbands only by their consent and after the death of my wife I will that all property given to her by me be equally divided between my five children. It is my will that Fielding B. West and James Herndon be my executors to this will revoking all wills heretofore made by me. Leonard West Witnesses: William Milliken C. Carter Simpson County, Kentucky Whereas Fielding B. West has had the use of my man Borllett for the last four years and my daughter Mary Herndon has for the same length of time had the use of my girl Lewellen and Susan Peters had also had the use of said Negroes during my life and as I have heretofore given my two sons, Amos S. West and William West; to William West the use of my farm in Calloway County that is not rented and to my son Amos S. West one hundred and fifty dollars perhaps during my life all of which I bequest is I think about equal as my wish is to do justice between all my children. Given under my hand this 15th January, 1840 Leonard West
