13 June 1832 Spencer Co. Deed Book C p. 207 DIANNA MILLER of Nelson Co. KY to LYNN SMILEY of 
Spencer County and State aforesaid... the said DIANNA MILLER having at this time a child whose name is 
WILLIAM JOSHUA and considering herself unable to support the s’d child doth covenant and agree with 
the s’d SMILEY that he the said SMILEY shall take the child and provide for it until it arrives at the age 
of twenty one years which will be on the 11 Jan 1853 and that the said Dianna will not in the least 
endeavor to arrest said child out of the possession of said SMILEY until it arrives to the age of twenty 
one years.  The said SMILEY has on his part agreed to treat said child well and will well and truly instruct 
him in the art and Mystery of Farmer which he the said SMILEY towit follows and will use every possible 
means in his power to make the said WILLIAM JOSHUA as perfect in the art and mystery of farmer as 
possible and that he the s’d SMILEY will allow the S’d WILLIAM JOSHUA good and sufficient meat drink 
apparel washing & lodging and all other things suitable for a Boy in like occupation during said term.  And 
the s’d DIANNA is not to use or exercise her authority over sad child during the term of service as above 
state.
