ROBERTS, Franklin Co., fought at Hartsville and Stone River, and died of disease in the spring of 1863. He was awarded medal of honor for gallant and meritorious conduct at Stone River." pg. 740 "JOHN ROBERTS, Franklin Co., was left sick at Murfreesboro, January 1863; was captured there, and died in prison. FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY A History of Kentucky & Kentuckians, Vol. II, 1912, page 730 GRANT L. ROBERTS. In the matter of birth, Grant L. Roberts, deputy internal revenue collector, is a native of the Buckeye state, in Canton, Ohio, having first seen the light of day on July 31, 1864. He is, however, of immediate Welsh extraction, his parents, CALEB K. and CAROLINE MATILDA (KELLY) ROBERTS, both having been born in Wales, where they were reared and spent their early days. They were still in their youth when they recognized the greater opportunity presented by the newer county across the Atlantic and it was after arriving in the land of the stars and stripes that they were married. They have long been residents of Canton, in which city they are numbered among the substantial and upright citizens, partaking as they do of those staunch and commendable characteristics which are involuntarily associated with the name of Wales. Grant L. Roberts was reared and educated in the city best known as the home of the martyred president, William McKinley. It was in 1888, when a young man only a few years past his majority, that he came to Kentucky and became business manager of the Lexington "Leader", which paper was then and is now owned, published and edited by his brother, SAMUEL JUDSON ROBERTS (technically his half-brother). Two years later he assumed his first public office as gauger in the internal revenue department, a position which he held for three years. He was then transferred from Lexington to the state capital, Frankfort, where he continued in the same capacity until 1893, when he resigned to accept the superintendency of the O.F.C. & Carlisle distilleries. This three years later he resigned to become clerk in the claims department of the office of the auditor of the state. Samuel H. Stone was at that time state auditor. He held the above-mentioned position until 1900, in which year he went to Washington, D.C. and for twenty months was employed in the census department. Returning to Frankfort he became deputy internal revenue collector, in charge of the stamp office for the Frankfort division, a position which he has ever since held and of which he is the incumbent at the present time. Mr. Roberts, as everyone knows who is fortunate enough to have his acquaintance, is a Republican, being of the most loyal stamp and active in his labors in behalf of the party. He is one who takes a great amount of pleasure in his social relations and is a prominent lodge man. He is high in Masonry, being a Master Mason; is past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and was for the year ending July 1, 1911, District Department grand exalted ruler of this order for the western district of Kentucky. He is an able man and numbers many friends and admirers in the state of his adoption. Mr. Roberts was married on the 26th day of March 1890, to Miss MARY PENNOCK, of Minerva, stark County, Ohio, she being a daughter of Pusey and Sarah Pennock. Their 3 children are JAMES H., CAROLINE and SAMUEL J.P. FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY A History of Kentucky & Kentuckians, Vol II, 1912, page 1140 HENRY H. ROBERTS. That celebrated manufacturing concern, the Hoge-Montgomery Company of Frankfort, makers of shoes and one of the most important industries of the South, is fortunate in having among those who preside over its destinies Henry H. Roberts, secretary, a man of marked business acumen and executive force, who stands as one of the valuable and representative citizens of the capital city. He is a native son of the Blue Grass state, having been born at Elkton in Todd County, Kentucky, on April 24, 1862, his parents being WILLIAM H. and MARTHA A. (BRYAN) ROBERTS. Both father and mother were Kentuckians before him, the birthplace of the former having been Elkton and of the latter Fayette County. The paternal grandfather (Thomas Q. Roberts), however, was of the city of Frankfort, where his father, THOMAS QUICK ROBERTS, had been numbered among the pioneers. He was of English descent, but had come from the Old Dominion to Kentucky and became one of its most loyal citizens. The paternal grandmother was a Miss HOUGH, and it is from her that the subject derives his middle name. The maternal grandfather was Woodson Bryan, of Fayette County, Kentucky, and the scion of a very old family in the annals of the state, who settled at Bryan Station. Mr. Roberts' father had the distinction to be the first druggist to establish himself in business in Todd County, and he conducted his drug store at Elkton for over 30 years. He made his home with Mr. Roberts in his later years, the demise of this estimable gentlemen occurring at Frankfort in 1908, when his age was 77 years. His wife died two years previously, also aged 77. They were the parents of five children, and of this number Mr. Roberts is the only survivor. Henry H. Roberts was reared in Elkton and there attended the common schools. He later entered school at Hillsboro, Illinois, and completed a thorough education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He has been associated with Charles E. Hoge in business since 1887, with the Mason-Hoge Company in the railroad construction business, and has been a valued factor in the Hoge-Montgomery Company since 1893. The personnel of the officers of this concern are as follows: Charles E. Hoge, president; James F. Montgomery, vice-president and general manager; S. French Hoge, treasurer; Henry H. Roberts, secretary; Charles F. Strassner, sales manager. The business was established in 1889 and has therefore been in the field over 20 years. It was originally known as the Frankfort Shoe Manufacturing Company, but was changed in name in 1905. The capacity of the plant at the time of its inauguration was about seven hundred pairs daily (this in 1889), but it has flourished steadily and uninterruptedly and the plant has been so enlarged and improved that at the present time there is a daily output of seven thousand, two hundred pairs, operating every day in the year with the exception of Sundays and legal holidays. The machinery is of the most modern and improved type and the plant is larger than that of any shoe factory south of the Ohio River. "Frankfort Shoes" are known all over the United States, wherever shoes are worn and good shoes appreciated, and as someone has said very truly, with the possible exception of whiskey, there is no other product for which Frankfort is so well known. The shoes of the Hoge-Montgomery Company are high class, being unusually well made even in a land which is noted all over the world for the excellence of its foot wear, and as said before they are everywhere handled by the largest dealers. Mr. Roberts is a man who enjoys the confidence of his associates, and known to be the friend of good education it was very appropriate that he should be made president of Frankfort's Board of Education. He has given the most faithful and efficient service in this important public capacity continuously for a period of fifteen years. He is very prominent in lodge circles, particularly in the Masonic order, and he is eligible to wear the beplummed helmut of the gallant Knights Templars. He has been highly honored by brother Masons and has occupied all of the chairs in the blue lodge, the chapter, council and commandery, and he is past eminent commander of Frankfort Commandery, No. 4. He likewise holds membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He is a member of the Baptist church and gives generous support to all the good causes promoted by the church body. On the 27th day of August 1886, Mr. Roberts joined the ranks of the Benedicts, taking as his wife Miss Anna Wilcoxsin of Shelby County, Kentucky, a native of that county and a daughter of James Flournoy and Betty (Mahorney) Wilcoxsin. Her paternal grandmother was a Miles, and her maternal grandmother a Baldock, well-known families of that name. Seven children are growing up beneath their roof, six of this charmed number being daughters and one a son, their names being: IDA HOUGH, RUTH FLOURNOY, ANNA KENNEDY, CHARLES HORATIO, HENRIETTA, RACHEL RHEA, and POLLY MONTGOMERY. State of KY, Franklin Circuit Court, July Term 1830. HENRY ROBERTS, resident of Franklin County, KY, aged 72 (b 1758). Henry Roberts enlisted for the term of 3 years on 1-9-1777 in the State of VA on Continental establishment in the 3rd Regiment of Light Dragoons then commanded by Col. George Baylor. After Col. Baylor was taken prisoner by the British in Oct 1778, that Regiment was commanded by Col Wm. Washington. Then he was mustered in and served in the 4th Troop of that Regiment which troop was commanded by Capt. Cadwallader Jones (early PA Quaker name); the Lt. was John Stith; the Cornet was Cheswell Barrett. After the defeat of that regiment in October 1778 in NJ (at which time John Swan, Capt of the 5th Toop was also taken prisoner), then John Stith took command. Henry Roberts served with this troop until his enlistment was up. Then he also served in the MD line on Continental establishment in the year 1776, discharged in Dec. 1776 by Capt. Frederack Fams (perhaps Sams.) Served lastly in the PA Militia in the winter and fall of 1781. That Henry Roberts applied to be put on the pension list in April 1827 and received the reply that he owned too much land. Property in Kentucky. Henry Roberts then makes affidavit re his assets seeking to disprove that he owns too much property. Affidavit made by Catherine Roberts, wife of Henry, dated 1833 in Franklin Co. KY. Catherine says she is 63 years old (b 1770) and married Henry Roberts in Baltimore Co. MD. She says they were married by Lewis Richards a Baptist minister. That she had lost her original certificate but now has it for record. She says her husband was named Patrick Henry but dropped the Patrick early in life and was always called Henry. Catherine is a widow in 1833. Affidavit dated 8-3-1853 by Edmund A.W. Roberts of Franklin County, KY. Edmund is the son of Henry and Catherine. Edmund was 30 years old in 1853.
