MARTIN was born March 19, 1837, and is the youngest of eight children born to William and Matilda (Young) Martin, natives of Shelby and Garrard Counties, Ky., and of English and Irish descent respectively. William L. Martin was born about 1776, his parents being among the earliest pioneers of the "dark and bloody ground." In early life he learned the tailor's trade, which he followed all his life. While yet a young man he removed to Garrard County, Ky., where he was married; thence went to Burkesville, Cumberland County, where he remained only a few years. He then moved to Campbellsville, Taylor Co., Ky., where he resided until his death, in March, 1841. His father, William Martin, was a native of Virginia, and was one of the friends and associates of Daniel Boone. Mrs. Matilda Martin departed this life May 17, 1884, in her ninety-fifth year. Her father, Patrick Young, was born in Ireland, and at the age of twelve years came to the United States, first settling in Virginia, and thence removing to Garrard County, Ky. Robert H. Martin was born in what is now Taylor County, Ky., and has acquire an excellent practical business education. When he as only four years old he lost his father, and at the age of sixteen he was employed as a salesman in a dry goods store at Campbellsville, remaining until 1863, when he was appointed postmaster at the same place, and held that office until 1867, when he resigned that and again engaged in the dry goods business as a clerk, continuing the same until February, 1877, when he was again appointed postmaster, and held the office until 1885, since which time he has been engaged in the grocery trade. He has also been engaged in the fire insurance business since 1868, and part of the time was police judge of Campbellsville. Mr. Martin was married November 17, 1864, to Miss Sophia S. Wheat, a native of Columbia, Adair Co., Ky., born January 30, 1844. She is a daughter of Eli and Elizabeth (Allen) Wheat. Three sons and four daughters have blessed this union; their names are as follows: Bettie (deceased), Anna A., Henry H., Willie (deceased), Mary K. Y., Robert T. and Matilda. Both Mr. Martin and wife are, and have been for many years members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which church he has held numerous official positions, and has been superintendent of the Sunday-school for the past fifteen years. He is also a bright member of the Masonic fraternity, having advanced to the council degree of R. &U S. M., and has officiated for many years, both as W. M. of his lodge and H. P. of the chapter.
