Submitted by Debbie Dicken Cliff Diving Leads to Drowning A 23-year-old Campbellsville man, swimming with four friends, drowned Saturday in Green River Lake near "Blackberry Point." Andy Veatch of 711 High Pine, was diving from a 20 foot ledge about 2:51 p.m. when he came to the surface once, according to a witness, and then disappeared. Veatch's body was recovered in about 30 minutes by divers who were on vacation at the lake. The Campbellsville-Taylor County Rescue Squad were also called to the scene. Veatch was pronounced dead at about 3:55 p.m. by Jack Bryant, deputy coroner. Bryant said Monday that Veatch was supposed to be "an excellent swimmer." An autopsy was performed at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown by Dr. James Engles, a pathologist there. According to Engles, there were no marks or bruises that would indicate that Veatch had hit his head on something as he dove into the water. Veatch's body was discovered in about 30 feet of water in an area that is marked "no swimming" by an international swimming sign. The area in question is near Taylor County Boat Dock, off a nearby point. Billy Salsman, park manager of Green River Lake for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said that jumping and diving from any ledges at the lake should be considered hazardous. A drowning occurred two years ago across from Ramp 1 when an Adair County man jumped from a ledge. The drowning Saturday was the second at Green River Lake in the last 30 days. A 14-year-old Campbellsville boy drowned June 19 while swimming with his mother. Unknown Taylor County newspaper, no dateline.
