(Just noticed, upper left hand corner near price, it says Union County's Oldest Newspaper) BYRON HEFFINGTON Funeral Services were held at 2pm Wednesday for Byron (Freddie) Heffington, 66 of Morganfield who passed away Sunday August 3, at Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville. Heffington had been Morganfield City Administrator for 42 years, and was treasurer of GRADD executive board at the time of his death. He had also been a past president ofthe board, president of NINCO, past board member of Texas Gas, past board member of Kentucky Retirement Board, past officer of the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club, as well as a past member of the League of Cities. He was a retired Naval NCO. Mr. Heffington was a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Loddge and American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Ann Heffington and two sons, Gene Heffington of Bowling Green and Larry Heffington of Athens, TX, five grandchildren also survive. Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Morganfield with interment in Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield. Rev. Don Davis officiated. Whitsell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ALMA LORENE QUIREY Mrs. Alma Lorene (Bobbie) Quirey, 89, of Sturgis, died Tuesday, July 29 at Community Hospital in Henderson. Mrs. Quirey was a member of the First Christian Church of Sturgis and owned and operated the Sturgis Specialty Shop with her son O.C. Quirey. She is survived by her husband Courtney Charles Quirey; one daughter, Barbara Sprague of Henderson; two sons, Courtney C Quirey Jr. and Otho Calvin Quirey, both of Sturgis. Other survivors include five grandchildren: Charlotte Stewart nad David Sprague of Sturgis, Nancy Shelton Morganfield, Sarah Sprague, St. Simons Island, GA, and Linda Lisman of Louisville. Nine great grandchldren and three great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10am Thursday, July 31, at the First Christian Church in Sturgis. Rev. Jeff Bullock officiated. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Whitsell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. MARY SMITH Mary Smith, 55, Waverly died Wednesday, July 30 at her home of natural causes. Mrs. Smith was a cook at Breckinridge Golf and Country Club in Morganfield. Surviving are her husband, Chester; a daughter, Melvina Smith of Waverly; two sisters, Jean McQuire of Waverly and Ann Frazier of Fort Washington, MD; two brothers, Sam Willett of Morganfield and Melvin Whillett of Aurora, IL; two grandchildren, Tanja nad Melvin Smith ; nieces and nephews. Price, 79, of Sullivan died Thursday,August 14 at UnionCounty Methodist Hospital. He was a retired coal miner .He is survived by his wife, Mary of 21 years; one daughter, Dorothy Moore , Houston, TX; one son, Roger Price of Pride; seven step daughters, Ruth Helen Goodwin, Basket, Elizabeth Ann Shelton, Kim Powell, Mary Powell,and Rhonda Bumpus, all of Henderson, Betty Moore, Sturgis and Teresa Farthing, Elizabethtown; nine step sons, James Louis Willet and Michael Willet, both of Sturgis, Gary Curtis Willet, Corydon, Rudy Willett and David Willett, both of Henderson, Bernie Willett,Waverly, Steve Willett, Morganfield, Kenneth Wayne Willett, Oklahoma, and William Willett, Paducah; one sister, Elsie Stone of Marion; several great grandchildren and several great great granchildren .Funeral services were held Saturday, August 16, at 2pm at Whitsell Funeral Home, Sturgis with Rev. Noble Cobb officiating. Burial was in Pride-Bordley Cemetery. WELDON COLLINS Weldon Collins, 80 year old resident of Sturgis, died Wednesday,August 13,at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. He was a retired coal miner, World War II veteran, member of the First Baptist Church of Sturgis, member of Kelsey Masonic Lodge #659, 32degree Mason, and a member of the Rizapah Shrine Temple.He was preceeded in death by his wife Bernice in 1989.He is survived by one sister, Doris Wade of Sturgis, two brothers, Max Collins and Wendall Collins, both of Clay, and several nieces and nephews .Funeral Services were held Friday, August 15, at 1pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Rev. John Coble officiating. Masonic services were conducted Thursday night. Burial was at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis .AUGUST F. BRINKMANN JR .August F. He is survived by two sons, Earl Brinkmann, of Sturgis, and Wayne Brinkman of Washington, Missouri; two sisters, Esther Zimmermann, St. Louis, Missouri, and Verna Keller Bock, Hermann, Missouri and four grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Saturday, August 16, at 2pm at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Hermann with Rev. James Elliott and Rev. Paul Daussman officiating. IVA BERNELL POWELL Iva Bernell Powell, 61, of Waterloo, Illinois and a former resident of Union County died Saturday, August 16, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, Illinois. She is survived by her husband, George Powell, Waterloo, IL; two daughters, Phyliss Hemphill, Escondido, CA, and Patricia Sue Reynolds,Imperial Beach, CA; three sons, John Young Powell, Los Angeles, CA, Richard Dale Powell, Waterloo, IL, and Robert Morgan Powell, Henderson; one sister,Jeanette Cates, Waterloo, IL; one brother, William S. Obits on page 2 HELEN KATHERINE STEVENSON BURGET Helen Stevenson Burget, 78, died Sunday, August 17, in Seattle,Washington. Born in Henshaw, KY., she was a graduate of Sturgis High School,William Woods College in Fulton, MO., and attended Bowling Green University .She reared three children while living with her husband, Wilmer Burget in Lafayette, IN. She is survived by her husband and children; Barbara Shelton and Chuck Burget of the Seattle area, and Mary Erickson of Bristol, TN., and six grandchildren, her sister, Ann Dawers of Frankfort,KY., and her brother, Tom Stevenson of Henshaw. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a favorite charity VELORICE N. COLE Velorice N. Cole, 87, Sturgis, died Friday at Community Battle Creek Health Systems, in Battle Creek, MI. Mrs. Cole was the oldest member of New Salem Baptist Church. She was originator of Church Anniversary Celebration. She enjoyed cooking, quilting and sewing.She is preceeded in death by her husband in 1988. Survivors include one foster daughter, Glenda Bridge of San Bernardina, CA; two sons, Emmerin and Carl of Battle Creek, MI; one brother, Gwynn Willis of Indianapolis, IN; and a special friend, Mary Corrine Lawrence; seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Services were at 11am Friday at New Salem Baptist Church in Sturgis,with Rev. Warren McKinney officiating. Burial was at New Salem Baptist Cemetery. IMA B. SEIB Ima B. Selb, 95, of Evansville, a native of Union County, died Monday, at 10:05 at Regina Continuing Care Center. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Loe Seib in 1984 .She is survived by neices and nephews.Services were at 9am Friday at St. Benedict Church with Fr. Harold Hammerstein officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Thursday atZiemer East. MITCHELL ELROY MILLS Mitchell Elroy Mills, 75, Sturgis died Tuesday, August 19, at 2:40pm at his residence .He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and a World War II Veteran and was a Bronze Star recipient. He worked for the mine Safety & Health Administration until 1984 when he retired. Survivors include his wife, Selena Mills, one daughter, Diane Dement of San Antonio, TX; one son, Adrain Mills of Marion, IL; one brother, A. J .Mills of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Jeff Ellis officiating.
