Dec. 2, 1998, Number 48. Obits on page 2. HANSFORD SHACKLETTE, d. Nov. 30, 1998 Dr. Hansford T. Shacklette, 84, of Uniontown, died Monday, at Union County Methodist Hospital. A brother, Dan Shacklette, preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by cousins, Virginia Wathen of Uniontown and her brother Bill Threlkeld of Versailles,KY. and Sue O’Bryant of Waverly and her brother Bill Threlkeld of Florida. Visitation will be from 3pm to 8pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. The funeral will be held Thursday, Dec. 3 at 10am at the First Baptist Church in Morganfield with Rev. Steve Thompson and Rev. Mark Gallaway officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Morganfield. Friends may call from 3-8 pm Wednesday and until service time Thursday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Dr. Shacklette has written over 100 Geological booklets. He was a scientist for the US Geological Survey in Denver, CO and worked in the Aleutian Islands, Africa, Russia, China and Poland. He took soil samples in every county in the United States during his career. He started Shacklette Greenhouse in 1949. Dr. Shacklette had a degree in Botany and received his doctorate in Geology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was internationally known as a geologist. In later years, Dr. Shacklette had written his autobiography and had it published. He was born in Henderson County, Sept. 1, 1914 to Daniel Fulton Shacklette and Bertha (Taylor) Shacklette. Nov. 29, 1998 Alma Blandford, 83, of Guthrie, KY, died Sunday, at Medco Center in Pembroke, KY. She is survived by one brother, Curtis Melton of Providence. Services will be today (Wednesday) at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Bro. Jerry Chesser officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Clay. She was born in Clay, on Sept. 19, 1915 to Theodore Ramsey and Eula (Hunt) Ramsey. RICHARD S. YOUNG, d. Nov. 24, 1998 Richard S. (Cotton) Young, 82, of Sturgis, died November 24, at Holiday Nursing Home in Princeton, IN. Survivors include one daughter, Penelope W. West of Princeton, IN; two sons, Richard T. and Robert B. Young, both of Sturgis; three sisters, Hilda Wells of Pride, Elizabeth Brown of Sturgis and Edna Bugher of Evansville, In; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was born Sept. 16, 1916 to Sylvanis Baxter Young and Elizabeth Young. Mr. Young retired from the US Postal Service after 32 years. He was a past commander of the Sullivan VFW Post #5486, he had been associated with the Masonic Lodge, a WW II Veteran and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. VIRGINIA PARKER LINDSEY, d. Nov. 24, 1998 Virginia Dale Parker Lindsey, 57, of Providence, died Nov. 24, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. Survivors include her husband, Joe Parker Lindsey Sr; one daughter, Debra King of Madisonville; two stepdaughters, Jeanette Baldwin of Hanson and Renea Baldwin of Nortonville; one son, Tony King of Madisonville; two stepsons, Joe Parker Lindsey Jr and Owen Matthew Lindsey, both of Madisonville; her mother, Nettie Clorine Parker of Madisonville; two sisters, Joyce Choate of Clarksville, TN., and Sue Jones of Earlington; six brothers, Billy Parker of Crittenden Co., Jimmy and David Parker of Rabbit Ridge, Paul Parker of Sturgis, Jackie Parker of Dawson Springs and Jerry Parker of Benton; and nine step grandchildren. Day, 57, of Newburgh, IN., died Nov. 24 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. Nov. 26, 1998 Hallie Belle McCormick, 65, of Sturgis, died Friday at Harrisburg Medical Center in IL. Her husband, George, preceded her in death in 1993. Survivors include one daughter, Anita Thurman of Murray; three sons, Raymond L. Sigler of Sturgis, Ed Perdue of Beaver Dam, and George McCormick of Hot Springs, AR; one sister, Grae Alderson of Providence; three brothers, Vernon Sigler and Gene Sigler both of Indianapolis and Charles Sigler of Corydon; 12 grandchildren, nieces and nephews. CHARLOTTE RENDLEMAN, d. Nov. 26, 1998 Charlotte Rendleman, 71, of Sturgis, died Nov. 26 at Intensiva Hospital in Evansville. Her husband Joseph Norris in 1985 and a son William Ray Norris preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include her husband, Thomas Rendleman of Sturgis; three daughters, Becky Adams, Joyce Bentley and Cathy Cavins, all of Sturgis; four sons, Joseph R. Norris of Sturgis, Donald Wayne Norris of Smith Mills, Steve Edward Norris and Randy Lee Norris, both of Henderson; three sisters, Diane Sheffer of Morganfield, Nancy Brewer of Uniontown, Sue Beard of Louisville; three brothers, Jerry Hagan of Evansville, Sonny Hagan of St. Louis, MO., and Pete Hagan of Morganfield; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mrs. Rendleman was born in Waverly, July 17, 1927 to Bernard and Ellen (Girten) Hagan. RUTH L. PARIS, d. Nov. 27, 1998 Ruth L. Paris, 84, of Sturgis, died Nov. 27, at Union County Methodist Hospital. Her husband, Henry Gordon Paris; one son Gene Paris of Sturgis; two sisters, Lillian Jackson of Sturgis and Garnett Johnson of Owensboro; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive her. Services were Sunday with Rev. Noble Cobb and Rev. Don Collins officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Mrs. Paris was a member of the Grangertown Church, she was born June 13, 1914 to the late Annie Lee Sale and Audie B. Sale in Union County. FRANCES MILLER, d. Nov. 30, 1998 Frances Miller, 82, of Morganfield died Monday at her home. Her husband, H. N. Miller, preceded her in death in 1989. Three daughters survive her, Shirley Mayes of TN., Jan Thene of Henderson, and Carolyn Bumpus of Morganfield; two sons, Terry Miller of Uniontown and Greg Miller of Morganfield; one sister, Wanda Dortch of IL; nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was a member of Walnut Grove Church of Christ. Services will be today (Wednesday) at 2pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Rev. Sam Belo officiating. Miles Woody, 85, of Sturgis, died Sunday, at the Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg, IL. One daughter, Donna Faye Hall of Shawneetown; one son, John Woody Sr. of Ottawa, IL; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren survive him. Mr. Woody was a WW II Veteran, having received many medals during his years in the Army. He was born July 30, 1913 in Crittenden County to Alpha Franklin and Bonnie Woody. Mary Ellen Waddlington, 85, of Princeton, died Friday morning at Caldwell County Hospital. Surviving are a daughter, Martha McCarty of Morganfield; two sons, James C. of Dallas, TX., and Denny of Princeton; a sister, Martha Moyer of Salem, VA; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, James preceded her in death, in 1978. Services were Sunday at Morgan’s Funeral Home, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Shane Hust, 34, of Nebo, died Wednesday from injuries suffered in an auto accident. Surviving are his mother, Georgia Potter of Nebo; a sister, Sarah Wallace of Dixon; three brothers, Virgil E. Jr. of Madisonville, Elvie G. of Morganfield, and Audie W of CA; a grandmother, Emma Herron and nieces and nephews. Waddell Sr. 82, of Sturgis, died Friday Dec. 11 at the home of his son’s in Benton, KY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Powell Waddell, who died in 1976. He was also preceded in death by his daughters, Dianna June Waddell who died in 1949 and Annette Waddell who died in 1954. Survivors include two daughters, Glenna Graham of Sturgis and Patricia Nesbitt of Dayton, OH; three sons, John Richard Waddell Jr. of Benton, KY,. Donald Waddell of Chandler, IN., and Ronnie Waddell of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Lula Waddell, Mary Waddell, and Imogene Waddell, all of Owensboro; one brother, Delmar Waddell of Sturgis; 19 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren and 6 step great-great grandchildren. Mr. Waddell was a retired cement finisher for 50 years and was retired from Industrial Contractors Inc. Mr. Waddell was born Jan. 13, 1915 to the late Nettie Lemon Riley Waddell and Norivn Marshal Waddell in Webster County. Dickie Shreve, 54, of Morganfield, died Sunday at his home in Morganfield. He was preceded in death by his father Lionel Shreve, who died in 1981, and his mother Pernie Shreve in 1988. Survivors include three brothers, Bill Shreve, David Shreve, and Bennie Shreve, all of Morganfield and nieces and nephews. Services were held today at 10am at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with the Rev. Steve Thompson officiated. Burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Morganfield. Mr. Shreve was a lifelong farmer in Union County. He was born April 17, 1944 in Morganfield to Harry Lionel Shreve and Pernie Lee Shreve. Elizabeth Louise Sales Stepura, 77, of Sturgis, died Friday at her home. Preceded in death by her husband Meyer P. Stepura SR., in 1982. Survivors include one daughter, Ellen Cathey of New Haven, IL; two sons, Meyer P Stepura Jr., of Chandler, IN. and Talmadge Stepura of Austin, TX; and four grandchildren. Services were held Sunday, Dec. 13. Burial at the Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis in Rev. Vic Trogdon officiating. Obits on page 2 Marilyn Omer, 84, of Morganfield, died Thursday Dec. 17 at Wellstar Hospital in Austell, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband William Compton Omer. Survivors include one daughter, Mary O. Layne, Marietta, GA; one son, Dr. Thomas F. Omer, Camden, NC; two sisters, Kathryn Fletcher of Providence and Dorthy Stiles of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, William Christian of Nashville and Charles Christian of Beth Page, TN; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, at Odd Fellow Cemetery with Rev. Mark Galloway officiating. Mrs. Omer was the Greyhound Bus Agent for several years. After the death of her husband in 1957, she worked in newspaper advertising in Charlotte, NC. After retiring, she moved to Marietta, GA to be near her daughter. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Morganfield. Mrs. Omer was born Nov. 14, 1914 to Thomas Fountain Christian and Inez (McCann) Christian. Guy Calvin Benson, 65, of Sturgis, died Monday Dec. 21, 1998, at Ridgeway Manor Nursing Home in Ridgeway, IL. Survivors include his wife, Delar Naomi Benson, Sturgis; four daughters, Julie Toman, Sturgis, Karen Goodaker, Dawson Springs, Vicki Williams and Karen Hatcher both of Truman, AR; three sons, Chris Toman, Sturgis, Gary Toman, Morganfield, and Mike Toman of Panama, OK; three sisters and seven brothers; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There was no services at Vickery Funeral Home in Shawneetown, IL. Mr. Benson was cremated. Phillips, Sr., 77, Loves Park, died Friday Dec. 18, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stoy and Nellie Boone Phillips and two sisters. Survivors include his wife Margaret; three sons, James “Tom” Phillips, JR.,l Rockford, Charles “Rick” and Mike Phillips of Love Park; two daughters, Judy Hervey, Riverside, CA., and Sharon Diderich of Las Vegas, NC; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jimmy J. Gibson, 60, of Morganfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Community Methodist Hospital in Henderson. Survivors include his wife, Gillie Gibson of Morganfield, one daughter, Pam Collins of Henderson; two sisters, Christine Blackburn and Hazel Gibson; one brother, Jay Gibson all of Pikeville, KY and three grandchildren. Mr. Gibson was born Feb. 8, 1938 in Pikeville, KY to Lilburn Gibson and Sarah (Thacker) Gibson. George R. Hayes, Sr., Sturgis, died Tues. Dec. 22 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Survivors include his wife Betty Hayes, Sturgis; one daughter, Melody Fuller, Sturgis; twos sons, George Hayes Jr., Sturgis and Rev. Mr. Hayes was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA and Veteran of the Korean War. Clifford Kenley, 81, of Sturgis, died Saturday, Dec. 19 at his residence. Survivors include his wife, June Kenley of Sturgis; one step son, Austin Samannsa of Newburgh, IN; two sisters, Etta Mae Shepherd of Williston, FL and Amy Eldridge of Dayton, OH; one step grandchild and one step great-grandchild. JAMES EDGAR MOREHEAD - 84, Sturgis, died Dec. 23, 1998 at Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite and one brother, Thomas Morehead. Survivors include one sister, Martha Williams of Sturgis; one niece Pamela Cameron of Rocky Mount, NC. Funeral was Dec. 27. 1998 with burial at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.
