Obits on page 2. TERESA "T.T." LOVELL Teresa Lovell, 34, Clay, died at 10:45 Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at a relative's residence in Sebree. She was a nurse's aid. Survivors include her husband, Richard; one daughter, Heather Lovell of Morganfield, three sons Derek Baize Tapp and Josh Baize Tapp, both of Henderson, and Jeremy Lovell of Morganfield.; two stepsons, Kevin Tapp and Cory Tapp, both of Henderson; her father and stepmother, Johnny and Tresia Baize of Sebree; her mother and stepfather Evelyn and Jim Bivins' of DeKoven; her grandmother, Mary Hoseapple of Madisonville; five sisters, Angela Pryor and Jean Pryor, both of Sebree, Veronica Spink and Lisa Oliver, both of Dixon and Sherry Brooks of Henderson; three brothers, Loman Baize and Charles McLean, both of Sebree, and Johnny R. Baize of Eddyville; nieces and nephews. Services were Sunday at Townsend Funeral Home in Dixon. The Revs. Morris Beach and Porter Hoover officaited. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Dixon. DOROTHY GATTEN Mrs. Dorothy Gatten, 75, died at 10:55pm Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at Medco Center of Morganfield. Mrs. Gatten was preceded in death by her husband Edgie Gatten in 1976 and also two sisters, Mary Kanipe and Imogene White. Survivors include four sons; John Gatten, Billy Gatten, David Gatten and Jeff Gatten, all of Morganfield; four sisters, Betty Quinn of Sturgis, Virginia Roby of Evansville, Gwen Hayes of Sturgis, Barbara Kelly of Clay; two brothers, J. C. Newcomb of Louisville, Ila Newcomb of Henderson; Mrs. Gatten had 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services were Saturday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis. Rev. Keith Ferguson officiated services and burial. Burial was at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. MAGNOLIA BUMPUS Mrs. Magnolia Bumpus, 78, Sturgis, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at 8:05am at Union County Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. She was preceded in death by her son Billy Gene Bumpus in 1962. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Joe L. Bumpus of Sturgis; three daughters, Joanne Henshaw, Henshaw, KY; Rosene Lewis, Marion, KY; Sue Norris, Sturgis, KY; four sisters; Ella Mae Thompson, Evansville, In; Lenvia Lovell, Sturgis, KY; June Wolfe, Henshaw, KY; Nell Rowley, OK; five brothers, James Lewis Shirel, Sturgis, KY, Orville Shirel, Sturgis, Billy Joe Shirel, Sturgis, Dix Shirel, Sturgis, Don Shirel, TX; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services were Friday at First Baptist Church in Sturgis. Rev. Don Collins, Rev. Jim Lane, Rev Don Phelps officiated services with burial at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. Mrs. Magnolia Bumpus was a 50 year member of Mt. Olive Church, Dekoven Eastern Star and graduated from the Sturgis High School in 1937. MIKE SWEENEY Mike Sweeney, Huntsville, Alabama, died Thursday, May 21st of a heart attack. Services were Monday, May 25th at Laughlin Funeral Home, with burial Tuesday, May 26th in Grandjunction, TN. He is survived by his wife Barbara and a cousin, John Markham of Sturgis. Mike was a 1952 graduate of Sturgis High School. MARGRETE MARIE JOHNSON Margrete Marie Johnson, 57, Carthage, MI, died May 27 at Laired Hospital at Union, MI. Services were May 29th at Wilcox Funeral Home, with burial in Carthage. Survived locally by her sister, Betty Brooks of Sturgis, one other sister, Patricia Allen and one brother, Brother Hershel Hoskins, both of Carthage. Three sons, Frederick W. and Troy A. Pierson of Evansville; and Michael D. Pierson of Fulton, MI, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. OPAL HOPSON Mrs. Opal Hopson, 91, Morganfield, died at 4:10am Sunday, May 31, 1998 at Medco Center in Morganfield. Mrs. Hopson was a member of the United Methodist Church and a Kentucky Colonel. She was born May 6, 1907 in Crittenden County to the late Mattie Flannery Reed and Luther Reed. Preceded in death by her husband Clarence Hopson in 1988 and a son Charles David Hopson in 1927. Survivors include three daughters, Ann McFadden of Clarksville, TN; Ruth Woods of Morganfield; Alma Jean Sigler of Elkhart, TN; two sons, Retired Colonel Richard Hopson of Henderson; Retired Sgt. Clarence Hopson Jr., of Henderson, 15 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Services were at 11 Tuesday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Rev. Bob Dunlop officiated services and burial was at Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield. RUTH BOSECKER Mrs. Ruth Bosecker, 70, Sturgis, died at 4:05 pm Sunday, May 31, 1998 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville, KY. Ruth was a long time employee of Coaches Corner Restaurant and at one time active with the Little League Program, Youth Center and Democratic Women's Club. Preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Bosecherk in 1960 and her son William Edward Bosecker in 1982. Survivors include two sisters, Mary E. Collins and Margaret Leibenguth, both of Sturgis; one brother, Richard Leibenguth of Poole, KY. Furneral Services are today at 2pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis. The Rev. Burt Owen will officiate as clergy and burial will be at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. LEE BROWN Mr. Lee Brown, 93, Sturgis, died at Saturday morning, May 30, at Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg, IL. Mr. Brown was born September 29, 1904 to the late Mary Jane Dailey Brown and Arrestor Alexander Brown. Lee was an employee of the Sturgis Milling Company. Survivors include his daughter, Charlene Ghose of Dixon and one sister, Nora Rhodes of Henderson. Mr. Brown had four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Services were Monday, June 1st at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis. Burial was at Pythian Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Don Collins officiatiing. JIM HAGAN Mr. Jim Hagan, 72, Waverly, died at 2:45pm Monday, June 1, 1998 at Union County Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. Survivors inlcude his wife, Imogene, two daughters, Kathy Wolfe of Waverly and Mary Sue Barron of Henderson; two sons, Tommy Hagan of Morganfield and Jimmy Hagan of Henderson; one sister, Loretta Girten of Henderson; and three brothers, Joe Hagan, Paul M. "Dude" Hagan and Billy Hagan all of Waverly. Services will be at 10am Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Waverly. The Rev. Bob Willett will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery. Gibson, 61, died Sunday morning at home of natural causes. He attended Grace Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Essie; a daughter, Donna Brown of Dixon; three sons, Michael, Jimmy and Gary, all of Clay; his stepmother Flora "Sister" Gibson of Henshaw; four sisters, Mary Newcom and Carolyn Ashby both of Clay, Sue James of Sturgis and Pearl Summers of Morganfield; a step sister, Velda Schaffner of Henshaw; three brothers, Darrel of Clay, Leonard of Sturgis and Calvin of Mattoon; and six grandchildren. Services were Tuesday at Vanover Funeral Home with burial in White Oak Cemetery. NORMA BURNS Norma Jean Burns, 67, of Evansville, died Tuesday night at Deaconess Hospital. She retired as a nurse's aide after 21 years at Pine Haven Nursing Home. She was a member of Pentecostal Prayer Center. Surviving are two daughters, Joy Trupen and Rose Fuller, both of Evansville; six sons, Van, Jack, Lonnie, Rick, Dave, and Denny, all of Evansville; three brothers, Bud Dunn of Princeton, IN., Jim Dunn of Francisco, IN., and Jerry Dunn of Morganfield; 20 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and neices and nephews. Her husband Delbert, died in 1994. Services were Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel, the Rev. Eugene Hall officiating, with burial in Tupman Cemetery. MAMIE HAILMAN Mamie Hailman, 99, Henderson, died at 6:30am Monday, June 8, at Community Methodist Hospital. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Tilden. Survivors include one daughter, Vickie Stone of Robards; three sons, Jame Hailman of Little Dixie, Elzie Hailman of Henderson, and Lester Hailman of Morganfield; six grandchildren; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; one step great great grandchild; nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2pm Wednesday at Tapp Funeral Home. Rev. Lester Nash will officiate. Burial will be Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole. EUGENE MARKHAM Eugene Markham, 67, Sturgis, died at 10:41am, Saturday, June 6 at Union County Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. He was a farmer by occupation having farmed since he was 12 years old for the Sprague farms. Mr. Markham was born February 4, 1931 to Rosa Vinson and Otto Lee Markham. Survivors include his fiancee, Joan Estes of Sturgis; one sister, Melva L. Daughterty of Sturgis; and five brothers, Gerald W. Markham and Daniel K. Markham, bot of Eddyville, Duel Markham of Fredonia and Kenneth A. Markham of Morganfield. Services will be Wednesday, June 10th at 1pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis. Burial will be at Pythian Ridge Cemetery KENNETH DUDLEY HAZEL Kenneth Dudley Hazel, 61, died on Sunday, June 7, of cancer at his residence in Mt. Juliet, TN. A management analyst, trainer and writer, Ken published many articles on leadership. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Peggy Hazel; a son, Chris Hazel; and a daugther, Genevieve Hazel; locally survived by his Aunt Mrs. Van Hazel, Sturgis; Uncle Guy Newcomb, IN., and one cousin Norma Trainer of Sturgis. A native of Sturgis, Ken received a B.S. from Murray State University, served as a U. S. Army officer in Germany, then worked for DuPont in Old Hickory. Later he formed his own management consulting firm, specializing in leadership. Visitation will be from 4:30 - 6:30 on Wednesday June 10 at St. Stephen Catholic Community at 14544 Lebanon Rd., Old Hickory, TN. A funeral Mass will follow immediately at 6:30pm at St. Stephen. Arrangements are being coordinated by Morturary Associates. Interment will be in Sturgis. A grave side service will be held at the Pythian Ridge Cemetery at 1pm on Thursday, June 11. GOLDIE HAZEL Goldie Hazel, 86, Sturgis, died at 12:05pm Saturday, June 13 at Medco Center in Morganfield. She was a member of Sullivan Baptist Church. Mrs. Hazel was born April 12, 1912 in Union County to the late Nora Etta Carrier and Thomas Reed Lamb. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles J. Hazel in 1974. Survivors include one sister, Glenda Cannoy of Clay and several nieces and nephews. Services were Monday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis. The Rev. Noble Cobb officiated the service with burial at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. CLARENCE I. POWELL Clarence I. Powell Sr. 83, Waverly, died at 7:15pm Wednesday, June 10 at his residence in Waverly. Mr. Powell was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Waverly. He was also a retired farmer and Kentucky State Highway employee. Clarence was a four year veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Corps Dental Clinic. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Virginia Wolfe Powell; five daughters, Elizabeth Anne Acker of Morganfield, Irene Price of Bordley, Viola Drury of Uniontown, Cecilia Gish of Morganfield and Mary Elsie Sims of Sturgis; one son, Clarence Powell JR. of Waverly; one sister, Martha Alice Utley of Morganfield; two brothers, Richard Leonard Powell of Uniontown and Rev. LEWIS (JIGGS) SHIREL Lewis "Jiggs" Shirel, 75, Dekoven, died at 8:30am Monday, June 22, at his home. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Judy; two daughters, Maude Miller of Sturgis, and Mary Nell Settle of Calhoun; one son, Robert of Evansville, IN; two stepsons, Clint Dickerson of Cooledge, AZ., and Robert Dickerson of Tucson, AZ.,; four sisters, Lenoia Lovell of Sturgis, Nell Rowly of Broken Arrow, OK., June Wolfe of Henshaw, and Ella Mae Thompson of Evansville, In.,; four brothers, Billy Jo Shirel of Morganfield, Orvel Shirel of Sturgis, Dix Shirel of Sturgis and Pete Shirel of Biloxi, MS; eight grandchildren and four step grandchildren. MILDRED HOLT Mildred Holt, 78, Morganfield, died at 8:24am Monday, June 22, 1998, at Union County Methodist Hospital. She was a member of Morganfield Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, P. G.; one daughter, Sandy Alward of Central City; two sons, Kenny Holt of Morganfield and Jim Holt of Hawthorne, NV; two sisters, Tillie Marshall of Fulton and Louise Holt of Providence; one brother, Millard Fourt of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Odom, 76, Sturgis, died at 11:10am Saturday, June 20, 1998 at his home. Mr. Odom was born November 30, 1921 to Amos Odom and Lula Ann (Hayes) Odom in Union County, KY. Survivors include his wife Frances; one son, Billy S. Vaughn of Coloney, TX; two brothers, Elton Odom of Cowling, IL and Vernon Odom of Champaign, IL; five step grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild. Duffy, 68, of Waverly, died Wednesday, June 17, at Union County Methodist Hospital. Survivors include one son, Patrick S. Duffy of Charlotte, NC; and two grandchildren. Services and burial were in Charlotte, NC. DONALD HILL Donald Hill. 53, of Sturgis, died Wednesday, June 17, at Union County Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. A member of the Sullivan Baptist Church, he had driven a school bus for 20 years. Survivors include one aunt, Dorothy Hill of Robards; and three cousins. Services were held Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home, Sturgis with Rev. Noble Cobb officiating. Burial was in Pride-Bordley Cemetery near Pride. VALLIE STEWARD LOVELL Valie Steward Lovell, 85, of Sturgis, died Wednesday, June 17, at his residence. A member of Shilow Christian Church, he was a World War II veteran and a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include his wife, Lenvia Shirel Lovell of Sturgis; three daughters, Faye French of Sturgis, Carolyn Smith of Georgetown and Hilda Martin of Aiken, SC; three sons, Kenneth Lovell and Dennis Lovell, both of Sturgis, and Vallie Lovell Jr. of Evansville, IN; two sisters, Arlene Skaggs of Smith Grove, KY and Nannie Brown of Morganfield; 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were held Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Rev. J. L. Laughlin and Rev.Jim Lane officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. WILLIAM C. BARNABY William C. Barnaby, 76, of Morganfield, died Tuesday, June 16, at Medco Center in Morganfield. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and a retired UMWA member. He was a WWII veteran. Mr. Barnaby was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1991. Survivors include two daughters; Mary Sue Binion and Cheryl Mart, both of Morganfield; a son, Dennis Barnaby of Morganfield; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services were held Thursday, June 18, from St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield with Father Bob Willett officiating. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery in Morganfield. PEARL MARIE THOMAS Pearl Marie Thomas, 95, of Owensboro, died Wednesday, June 17, at Carmel Home in Owensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Joseph Thomas in 1975 and three sons, Staff Sgt. Jesse Thomas JR., Jerome Thomas and Marion Eugene Thomas. Survivors include five sons; William T. Thomas, of Philpot, Edward L. Thomas, Dick Thomas and Paul Ralph Thomas, all of Owensboro and Leonard H. Thomas of Hawesville; four daughters, Virginia Raley, Thelma Clark, Rosetta French and Rita Ballard, all of Owensboro; 38 grandchildren; 90 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Hancock of Louisville and one sister, Theresa Davidson also of Louisville, and numerous neices and nephews.
