Contributed by Nancy Ratay" Date: 4 Nov 2001 ******************************************************************* Union County Advocate, Morganfield, KY, Sept 10 1970 Bill Moffit, former teacher-farmer, dies James William (Bill) Moffit, 80, former teacher retired farmer and well known Union County civic leader, died at 1:50 p.m. last Wednesday at Union County Hospital. He had never fully regained consciousness following injuries sustained in a fall at his mobile home at Moffit’s Lake several weeks ago. Born in Union County at Bordley, he was the son of the late Frank and Mollie Brown Moffit. He began his teaching career in Union County at Willow Grove near the Y at the age of 17, and next taught at McClure’s and Boxville. Later he served as a member of the faculty at Drake Business College, Patterson, New Jersey, where he met Daisy H. Spear, a Vassar graduate whom he married July 3, 1919 at the the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. They moved to Kentucky in 1920. She preceded him in death two years and six months ago. Moffit, besides being engaged in farming, worked at Morphett-Waller Equipment Company here in 1931 and 1932. He was employed at Camp Breckinridge during World War II in the Quartermaster section, and later was employed by Camp Cab Company and Bickett Equipment Company. He devoted a great deal of his life to promoting good roads, rural electricity and telephone service in his community and played an important role in development of a long time dream, the Moffit Recreation Area, which was named in his honor. He was a member of Morganfield Lions Club. Many former students were among those paying their respects at funeral services held at 10 a.m. Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home. Rites were conducted by Rev. Don Davis, pastor Morganfield Methodist Church. Burial was in Morganfield Odd Fellows Cemetery. Active pall-bearers were Gordon Morgan, Alan Baker, Charles Woodring, Allen Freer, Maurice Springer and High Kuykendall. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Louise Johnstone of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Beatrice Marvel, of Sullivan, and Mrs. Anna Morgan, city. Six grandchildren also survive. Moffit, 80, member of a widely known family and a resident of the Bordley community since 1920, died Tuesday morning at 7 o’clock at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, the result of injuries received in a fall at Hillcrest Nursing Center here Monday night at 9 o’clock. A native of Paterson, N.J., Mrs. Moffit was the former Daisy Spear. She was a graduate of Vassar College. Both she and her husband in their earlier years were active in Union County farm organizations. Since coming to Union County they had lived on the Moffit farm in the Bordley community near the scene of the new Moffit Lake recreation area. Mrs. Moffit is survived by her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Louise Johnstone, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Anna Morgan, city, and Mrs. Beatrice Marvel, of Sullivan and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Don Davis, pastor of Morganfield Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Morganfield IOOF Cemetery.
