Obits on page 2. DORTHA J. QUIREY Dortha J. Quirey, 72, of Sullivan, died at her home on Friday, Oct. 23, at 11:40am. She was preceded in death by her husband James M. Quirey in 1997. Survivors include three sisters, Charlotte Dyer of Sturgis, Sondra Baird of Morganfield, and Bettye Johnson of Mayfield; Two brothers, William T. Henshaw of Birmingham, AL., and James A. Henshaw of Avenue, MD; Several nieces and nephews. Services were Sunday, Oct. 25 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Jim Lane officiating, burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy can be made to St. Anthony's Hospice. Mrs. Quirey was a member of the Henshaw Christian Church. She was born Nov. 2, to John B. Henshaw and Anna L. Huckeby. NETTIE WADDELL Mrs. Nettie "Happy" Waddell, 82, of Sturgis, died Thursday, Oct. 29, at Harrisburg Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband Hillis in 1995. She is survived by a daughter, Patsy Bryant of Sturgis, and a son, Edward Waddell of Hobart, IN, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Services were Saturday Oct. 31, at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with burial in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Bro. Don Phelps officiated. Mrs. Waddell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. She was born in Union County on May 5, 1916 to James and Atlanta Waddell. NORMA JEAN TRAINER Norma Jean Trainer, 66, of Sturgis, died Friday, October 30, at the Union County Methodist Hospital. She is survived by her mother,Willia Nell Hazel of Sturgis; a sister, Ruth Long of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Patricia Anne David of Goodlettsville, TN; three sons, Scott Quinn of Sturgis, Anthony A. Bartolotto fo Lascassas, TN., and Alphonse Enu Bartlotto III of TN; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Services were Sunday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Rev. Don Phelps officiating. Burial was in the Pythian Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice or Union County Methodist Hospital Extended Care Unit. Mrs. Trainer was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sturgis, President of the Young Women's club and a KY Colonel. She was born Nov. 17, 1931 in Akron, OH to Robert Vanderbilt Hazel and Willia Nell (Hoffman) Hazel. HARRY EISENHAUER Harry Eisenhauer, 58, of Sturgis, died at his home Friday, Oct. 30. He is survived by his mother, Thelma Cale Day Eisenhauer of Madison, TN; his wife, Sharon Eisenhauer of Sturgis; one daughter, Tracy Nelson of Manitou; one step daughter, Susan Corley of Sullivan; two sons, Thomas Eisenhauer of Hanson and Scott Eisenhauer of Newburg, IN; one step son, Kevin Wright of Sturgis; two brothers, Paul Eisenhauer of Newport News, VA and Fred Eisenhauer of Hendersonville, TN and eleven grandchildren. Mr. Eisenhauer was a Correction Officer for the KY State Penitentiary in Eddyville; a member of the Marantha Baptist Church; a former Madisonville Police Officer and a member of the F.O.P. Services were Monday at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Pastor Van William and Pastor Mike DeMoss officiating. Burial was in the Hanson Cemetery. RUTH LEE ALVIS Ruth Lee Alvis, 85, of Sturgis, died Thursday morning at 1am at the Union County Methodist Hospital. She was a native of Sebree, KY. Ruth was an active member of the Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church. She served on the Stewardesses and Trustee Boards and the Missionary Society. In past years she had been active with the Order of the Easter Stars Auxiliary. Her husband, Nathaniel Alvis, preceded her in death in 1979. She is survived by two sisters, Odessa Williams of Lakeville, WI., and Roberta Smith of Indianapolis, IN; one daughter, Vanetta Alvis of Sturgis; a son, James Reginald Alvis of Sturgis; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Services were Monday at Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church with Elder John Frazier officiating, burial was in Springdale Cemetery in Sebree. Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. MILDRED MCGRAW Mildred Willett McGraw, 92, of Madisonville, died Friday at her residence. Born Jan. 5, 1906 in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Aubrey Willett and Cala Martin Willett. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Earlington, KY. She was a retired elementary school teacher of 47 years in Union and Hopkins Counties. She retired from West Broadway where she had taught for 15 year. She was a high school graduate of ST. Vincent Academy in Union County and a graduate of Western KY State Teachers College. She had been affiliated with the Association for Childhood Education; Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators, Business and Professional Women's Club, charter member and past president of The Hill and Dale Garden Club, Retired Teacher's Association and Stephen Ashby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin McGraw in 1985. She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Daniel W. (Deborah) Smith of Madisonville, and Mrs. Archie (Judy) Coburn of Waverly; three sisters, Doris Hicks of Bryson City, NC,. Helen Cordell and Frances McGregor both of Louisville, four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Services were Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Earlington with Fr. Martin Mattingly officiating, burial was in St. Peters Cemetery in Waverly. RITA KING Rita Jean King, 75, of Henderson, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 7, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1997. She is survived by four daughters, Joyce Ann Perry of Republic, MO., and Margaret Sutton, Anna Dunkerson and Carolyn Dutton, all of Henderson; three sons, Charles Joseph Shoftner of Burgin and Albert and Charles King, both of Henderson; three sisters, Alice Hodgson, Rosella Breeding, and Myrtle Babbs, all of Henderson; three brothers, William Thomas and Jesse Shofner, both of Henshaw, and Robert Shofner of Spring Grove; 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren. Services will be today (Wed.) at 2pm at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home in Henderson with burial in Fernwood Cemetery. SARAH RICHARDSON Sarah Mitchell Richardson, 77, of Gainesville, FL., died Thursday, Oct. 29, at North Florida Regional Center. She is survived by her husband, Mark; a son, David; and three grandchildren all of Gainesville; two sisters, Betty Davis and Ruth Conway of Sturgis, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Richardson was born and raised in Western KY and gradauted from Morganfield High School in 1938. She attended Murray State Teachers College and taught for several years in Clay. Her husband retired from service in the Army and they remained in Columbia, SC until 1990 when they moved to Gainesville. Services were Sunday, Nov. 1, at Wesley United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Thomas officiating. Entombment was in Forest Meadows Central Mausoleum in Gainesville. ANNA MAE WELDEN Anna Mae Welden, 87, of Morganfield, died Monday, Nov. 9, at the Union County Methodist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Roger Welden in 1980 and a son Daryl Welden in 1963. One son, Gary Welden of Morganfield; a sister, Gertrude Jennings of Evansville, IN; three grandchildren and one great grandchild survive her. Services will be today (Wed.) at 10am at St. Ann Catholic Church with Ft. Pat Bittel officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Mrs. Welden was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. Funeral Services set for Former Mayor, Business Leader J. B. (Dick) Holeman, 83, of Sturgis, died at his home Monday, Nov. 23, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Holeman; one daughter, Janis Reynolds of Charleston, WV; two sons, J. B. Holeman Jr. of Greer, SC., and John V of Sturgis; one sister, Marianna Totty of Flat Rock, NC; 5 grandchildren. Services will be at 11 am today (Wednesday) at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bert Owens officiating. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis until service time. Born Feb. 22, 1915 in Providence, KY, he was the son of the late Stella Elder and O. S. Holeman. He was married Oct. 18, 1939 to Mary Jeanette Bennett who survives. A 1933 graduate of Sturgis High School, he went to law school in St. Louis, MO. A veteran of WWII, he was a 2nd Vice Commander while stationed in Japan. Mr. Holeman owned and operated a Plymouth/Chrysler dealership in Sturgis for many years. He then owned and operated a Delta Materials, a sand and gravel business until his death. In 1947 he was elected a city councilman and served for two years. In 1949 he was elected Mayor of Sturgis and served for an 8 year term. While mayor, he implemented the new dial telephone system in 1950, the natural gas system, Cypress Ditch project and Water Purification Plant were also implemented during his terms. A member of the American Legion, he was appointed by the President of the United States, and named Commander of the Riddle Post in 1959. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Farmers State Bank in 1972. He served for 20 years with the last 13 years as a chairman of the board. He was a member of the Sturgis Kiwanis for 2 years, a 32 degree Mason, and member of Rizpah Shrine Temple in Madisonville and a member of the Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Lilly Mae Farthing d. Nov. 20, 1998 Mrs. Lilly Mae Farthing, 87, of Sturgis, died at her home on Friday, Nov. 20, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cody in 1977, and a son Bill in 1996. She is survived by three daughters, Doris Smith or Providence, Delores Owens of Henderson, and Maxine Arhelger of Sturgis; five sons, Robert, Max, and Joe, all of Sturgis, and Ronnie and Jimmy, both of Providence. 50 grand, great-grand, and great-great grandchildren. Services were Sunday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Bro. Stacy Pearcy officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Mrs. Farthing was a member of the Sturgis Missionary Baptist Church. She was born May 17, 1911 in Sullivan, IN to Joseph Hinton and Ida Bell Brown. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice. Leroy Ricketson d. Nov. 21, 1998 Leroy Ricketson, 59, of Morganfield, died Saturday, Nov. 21, at Union County Methodist Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Lois Ricketson of Morganfield and his mother, Lona Mae Ricketson of Sullivan; three daughters Michelle Ricketson of Jacksonville, FL., Patricia Underwood and Sharon Britt, both of Lebanon Junction, KY; three sons, John of Morganfield, Benny of Pride and Allen of CA; four sisters, Phylis Murrell of Morganfield, Joy Powers of Clay, Janice Walton of Salem and Emma Lou Harris of Sturgis; two brothers, Hank of Sturgis and Thomas of Sullivan; 16 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Services were Tuesday at Abundant Life Communtiy Church in Sturgis with Pastor Hank Ricketson officiating. Burial was in the Sullivan Community Cemetery. He was born July 13, 1939 in Sullivan to William Bryan Ricketson and Lona Mae (Truitt) Ricketson. From the Dec. 9, 1998 Sturgis News, a correction on an obit for Ruth Paris. It was stated that Rev. Noble Cobb would officiate at her funeral, however, Rev. John Coble was actually the presider and her date of birth should have read June 3, instead of June 13. We are sorry for this error.
