H. MARTIN was born in Washington County, Ind., April 15, 1839, being the sixth of a family of ten children, born to Stephen and Nancy (Hiestand) Martin. The father was a native of Kentucky, from which State he immigrated to Indiana at an early day. The mother was a native of Virginia and came to Indiana in about the year 1818. The subject of this sketch had limited facilities for schooling, but by his energy succeeded in securing a fair education. His youth was passed at hard work. He remained home with his parents until he attained his twenty-third year. On December 22, 1861, his marriage with Margaret Greene was solemnized and to this union have been born five children, all living: Annora, Arthur S., Oliver T., Lettie F. and Lois A. In politics he is Republican and is by occupation a farmer and stock-trader. His life has thus far been one of honor and usefulness.
