Son of Jacob Vanmeter, of Botetourt county, VA, and Martha Usher (Shrewsbury) Vanmeter, of Bath county, VA. Born July 20, 1830, at Bowling Green, KY, where he received his preparatory education. After graduating he began preparation for the profession of civil engineering, doing his principal work in connection with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Died January 31, 1875, at Bowling Green. He never married. Mr. Vanmeter was a man of superior intellect, and was popular and beloved by all.
