Morehead, and has been known and conducted as the Morehead House. Since 1863 it has been in the hands of the Hess family, and its present proprietors are Mrs. Sarah E. Armitage and Mrs. Camilla A. Herdman, members of this family. Their father, John Hess, was born in Staunton, VA, in 1794; he was a son of John Hess, a native of Germany, who immigrated to America at the close of the last century. The Hess family came to Kentucky in 1806, and settled in the Three Springs country, and were among the first families in that neighborhood. The paternal grandfather of these ladies was a exceedingly large man, and weighed, at the time of his death, in 1826, 450 pounds. Their father by occupation was a saddler, and for a great number of years was jailer of Warren County. He married, in 1827, Julia Ann Fox, daughter of Henry and Sarah (Parks) Fox. Mrs. Hess was born six miles north of Bowling Green, in 1809. To their union seven children were born, as follows: Alexander B. (deceased), John H. (deceased), Sarah E., William M., Alexander C., Camilla A. and Julia P. Mr. Hess died in 1859. In 1857 Mrs. Hess rented what was then known as the Green River Hotel, and there kept a boarding house until 1862, when the building was converted into a Confederate hospital; in 1862 she purchased the Morehead House. The building was remodeled in 1883, and is now 210x105 feet, and three stories high. The death of Mrs. Hess occurred August 26, 1876. Sarah E. Hess was united in marriage, in 1866, with Valerius Armitage, a Pennsylvanian by birth. They have two children: Harry V. and Mary J. Camilla A. Hess was married, in 1869, to John N. Herdman, a native of Bowling Green. To this union has been born three children, as follows: Julia N., Carl D. and Guy S. These families are among the leading and representative people of the county, and are members of the Baptist Church.
