JOSEPH A. HOGARTY, rector of St. Dominic's Church, Springfield, is a native of Lexington, Ky., and the youngest of a family of six children born to Martin and Mary (Fraser) Hogarty, the father a native of Mayo, and the mother of Belfast, Ireland. The father of Martin Hogarty was William Hogarty, who died in Ireland in the year 1849. Martin Hogarty was a stone-cutter by trade, and in early life became a very skillful workman. He immigrated to America in 1851, and located in Cincinnati, where he worked at his trade until about 1857, at which time he moved to Lexington, Ky., for the purpose of assisting in the construction of the Henry Clay monument, and there remained until his death in 1880 at the age of sixty-four years. Mary (Fraser) Hogarty, subject's mother, was a daughter of an office in the English Army, and was born July 28, 1816. She is still living, making her home in Union County, Ky. The following are the names of the children of Martin and Mary Hogarty: Alexander, Rev. William Hogarty, pastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Union County; Mary, deceased; Martin, deceased; Michael, and the subject of this sketch. Rev. Joseph Hogarty was born January 9, 1860, and spent the first thirteen years of his life in Lexington. In 1873 he entered St. Joseph's College at Bardstown, which institution he attended seven years, taking a thorough course and graduating in June, 1880. After graduating he entered the Preston Park Seminary at Louisville, where he pursued his theological studies, completing the same in June, 1883, at which time he was ordained priest, and assigned to duty at the cathedral, where he served in the capacity of assistant for nearly a year. In October, 1884, he was transferred to Springfield, as assistant to Rev. A. McHenry, rector of St Dominic's Church, in which capacity he remained until June, 1885, when he was placed in charge of the congregation, a position he still retains. Father Hogarty is a young man of fine abilities, a close student and a polished speaker. He is untiring in his labors to advance the interest of his congregation, and is a deservedly popular pastor. St. Dominic, numbering about 100 families, is an offshoot of the St. Rose congregation, and was established a number of years ago under the auspices of the Dominican order, Father Hogarty being its second secular pastor.
