KY, COMBS, JOHN S.35851 APPLIED FROM PERRY CO KY [Contributor's note: "John Combs' application was issued in Perry County as you will see. Since a man by name of Josiah Combs, in researching the family, usurped this pension for his John Combs (my John's father), it was necessary for us to do some serious research to prove that the Washington County John Combs received this pension." The following documents were enclosed: 1. The pension application (transciption.) 2. John's family sheet with the notes from the reverse side. 3. Typed copy of marriage permit from John for his daughter Nancy and Joseph Goode. Also typed copy of John's will. 4. Copy of John's will and estate settlement by Joseph Goode. 5. The handwritten notes from a research done by Dr. Carson Gibbs of Maryland to show that John, father-in-law of Joseph, was indeed the pensioner of S35,851. 6. List of pensioners in kentucky showing that there was only one John Combs with pension. I did not copy all of the payments but the chart extends from 1833 through 1852, years in which John's father John was deceased. 7. Joseph Goode's probate permit and his alloting of power of attorney to James P Ohara for John's last payments."] JOHN COMBS' PENSION APPLICATION State of Kentucky, Perry County and Circuit L--. On this thirteenth day of May 1825 personally appeared in open court before the Hon'l Joseph (G--?), Circuit Judge for this 15th Judicial District in the County of Perry, John Combs, age sixty four years the 7th of February last who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the act of Congress of the 18 of March 1818 and the 1st May 1820 that he this said John Combs enlisted for the term of three years on the first day of January AD 1777 (as he verily believes) after the Battle of Trenton in the state of New Jersey fought between the (US?) forces commanded by Gen'l George Washington and the Hessians. That he enlisted as apd in Fredrick County in the state of Virginia in the company commanded by Capt Johnthan Langdon in the 12th Regiment Commanded by Col James Wood in the line of the state of Virginia (---) on the continental establishment that he continued to serve in the said Corps untill two years and four months at the end of which being in consequence of sickness he was discharged by Gen'l Charles Scott former Governor of Kentucky who then commanded the Corps to which he belonged in the state of New Jersey near Brunswick, the name of the county is forgotten, which discharge he has long since lost or mislaid so that he cannot find it. He firmly relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension except this present, that his name is not on the roll of any state except the Virginia roll. And that the following reasons are assigned for not making earlier ap for a pension (viz) that untill lately he had been informed and believed that it was necessary for him to prove by some person whom he had served with, the services he had performed, and in consequence of his discharge being lost and that for several years past he had depended on a brother William Combs who has for many years (---) from him about 70 miles (---) to attend the court apd --- he (John Combs) has resided 20 miles from the courthouse and makes oath to the facts he has here declared as his brother knew of his enlistment and actual service himself being an Ensign in the 8th VA Reg't on continental establishment but he has always been --- to pension his attendance at the court apd and at the present term being informed that his own oath was all that the law required of him. ---- can be found --- has concluded to affix this P--- and sched'l. (See note.) And in pursuance of the act of Congress the 1st of May 1820. I do sollomly swear that I was a resident and citizen of the ____ ____ on the 18 of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or any manner disposed of any of my property or any part thereof with an intent thereby so as to diminish it as to being myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled. I Jessee Combs clerk of the Perry Circuit Court do hereby certify that it appears to the satisfaction of the Court that this ap. John Combs did serve in the Revolutionary War as stated in the preceding declaration apt the common serving for the time of two years and four months under an engagement on this continental establishment. I do further certify that the foregoing Oath and the schedule thereto an--- are truly copied from the Records in the (a page seems to be missing here HMW) Commonwealth of Kentucky Perry County (Set?). On this 15th day of March 1837 before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace for the said County of Perry personally appeared John Combs who on his Oath declared that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the Company commanded by Capt Jonathan Langton and he thinks ensign Slaughter and afterwards in the Company of Capt Benj. Casey - Field Officers Col. James Wood Lieut Col Neville Gen'l Scott and Maj Jonathan Clark - that there was some other Major before Maj'r Clark but does not recollect his name all of the service of the United States; that his name was placed on the Pension Roll of the State of Kentucky that he received a Certificate of that fact under the signature and seal of the Secretary of War, which Certificate on or about the month of August 1834 was as he believes taken out of his house in the said County of Perry by some mischevious hand to prevent him from drawing his money as he has not been able to find it since, and as further evidence that it was taken as above there was taken from his house at the same time Thirty Six Dollars in Round Silver a part of his former draw. John X Combs (his mark) Sworn to and subscribed before me the day and year aforesaid. Alexander Patrick Senr.
