Page 4 Declaration In order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress of the 7th of June 1832 State of Kentucky Washington Circuit} ? On this 11th day of August 1834 personally appeared before the Honorable William L. Kelly sole Judge of the Circuit Court for Washington County in the state aforesaid in open court John Taylor a resident of said court & state aged eighty two years this 15th day of last April who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make? the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress paped??7th June 1832. That he is as born in Amherst County Virginia and lived there until he was grown when he removed to Albemarle where he lived at the commencement of the Rvolution. He at early in the Revolutionary War but the precise date he does not remember he vounteerd under Colonel Lewis in Albemarle County also under the command of our Doctor Gilmore who was a captain or major. He does not recollect which and served on a tour of duty in the United States Service the length of time he does not recollect but believes it was from a month to six weeks. He was marched to Colonel Nelson in Hanover where they rendevouzed awhile but no fighting was done at the time. Some time after he returned home he was drafted into the service and served three tours of one month each at the Albemarle Barracks under John Higginbotham as Captain and Colonel Taylor. He was afterwards drafted for a service of three month in the 7th division of Virginia Militia under Colonel Rose Major???Payne nad James Franklin Captain. On this tour he was marched tto Stovalls Ferry on ??? River and from there to Moores Tavern in Prince Edward where he rendevouzed a shile and was marched to Guilford which he reached just after the battle the British began retratt and the division pursued them till they took shiping near the mouth of Hall River from this place He was marched back home.The British sailed around and landed a t Jamestown upon which he was again drafted into a service of three months under Colonel Pope and Captain John Woodruff and marched to a place called Drinking ??? near Williamsburg where he joined the main army under Lafayette and other generals. A large portion of the army including his division was marched from there to a place called the Morbin Hils and from there he was marched home. He states that he served the full time of nine months as above detailed besides the first tour which was from one month to six weeks. He knows of no witness by whom he can??? these facts in detail but so far as he can prove is by Henry Taylor and John Clarke and Turner Smith whose testimony will be annexed here to he was a soldier and ????? He removed from Virginia to Kentucky about 40 years and has lived in this county ever since. He ?? relinguishes every claim to an annuity or pension except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state. Sworn to and subcribed the day and year aforesaid. At the same time and place personally appeared Henry Taylor who being sworn states that he is now about 66 years of age that when he was a small boy living in Amherst County, VA that John Taylor the present applicant was for some time gone from home and he then said Henry was told by his parents and it was said in the neighborhood that said John Taylor was in the revolutionary army. He is a sisters son of said John Taylor and has known him all his life and knows that he has always been reputed? a revolutionary soldier. Sworn to and subscribed as above HENRY TAYLOR Also personally appeared John Clarke who being sworn states that he was in the army of the revolution at Guilford the time John Taylor speaks in his?? of being there that he has been acquainted personally with said Taylor for a great many years and from their conversations on the subject no doubt remains on his mind that said Taylor served that tour of duty as he has declared and he has lived a neighbor to said Taylor for 36 years during which time he has always been reported? a revolutionary soldier and the said Clarke fully concurs in that opinion and believes that the foregoing dclaration in true. He states that said Taylor is a man of good character and entitled to credit on oath or otherwise. JOHN CLARKEi Also personally appeared at the same time and place Turner Smith a minister of the gospel who being sworn states that he lives and for many years has lived a neighbor to John Taylor ??? (the present)/ applicant. ?? said Taylor as long as he has known him has been generally reputed & he lived in his neighborhood to have been a revolutionary soldier and that in concerning in opinion and believes the foregoing declaration to be true. He also states that said Taylor is a man of good character and considered by his acquaintances and particularl by said officiant as entitled to credit on oath or otherwise. Sworn to and subscribed Turner Smith And the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigatin of the matter and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the war department that the above named John Taylor was a revolutionary soldier and served as he has stated and the court further certifies that it appears to the court that Henry Taylor, John Clarke, & Turner Smith who have subscribed the foregoing affidavits are all residents of this county credible persons and that their statements are entitled to credit also that said Turner Smith is a minister of the gospel. I Charles C. Kelly clerk of the Washington Circuit Court in the state of Kentucky certify that the foregoing five pages ( the fourth con___ with the three first lines of Turner Smiths affidavit and the fifth commencing with the first page of this sheet) contain the original proceedings of said Court in the matter of the application of John Taylor for a pension.
