Slavey BEATY, Martin, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Abingdon, Va.; operated an iron furnace; moved to Wayne County, Ky., in 1817 and engaged in drilling wells for brine and in the manufacture of salt at Saltville, Ky.; member of the State senate 1824-1828 and in 1832; presidential elector on the Whig tickets of Clay and Sergeant in 1832 and Harrison and Granger in 1836; was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress and in 1830 to the Twenty-second Congress; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-third Congress (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1835); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1834 to the Twenty-fourth Congress; member of the State house of representatives in 1848; moved to a farm near Belmont, Tex., in 1856 and engaged in agricultural pursuits and cattle raising; died in Southfork, Owsley County, Ky.; interment in Belmont Cemetery.
