HISTORY: THE WAYNE COUNTY OUTLOOK JUNE 9, 1904- MONTICELLO, KENTUCKY TYPED AS PUBLISHED AND SUBMITTED By Laura Frost Wright March 25, 2000 THE OIL FIELD The inclement weather of the past week has rendered it impossible for the operators to accomplish much in the way of transporting machinery, material, etc for new rigs, and as a consequence it has been what is considered a dull week in the field. Drilling is progressing nicely but there are few results to announce. The best strike of the week, as far as we have been informed, is the harriman"s and Kentucky"s No.1 on the GIBSON ROBERT"S farm, which came in Saturday , and is expected to be a 100 barrel producer. The Cumberland oil Company"s No.1 on the ROUSSEAU farm drilled in the same day proved to be a dry hole. There are quite a number of new arrivals in the field and just as soon as the weather will permit and material can be obtained for the purpose, numerous new rigs are to be erected. The New Domain commenced a 2,000 foot hole on the JORDON McGOWAN farm eight miles north of Monticello. The Cumberland Oil Company, drilled in their No.1 on the ROUSSEAU farm, Saturday, which proved to be a duster. The Kentucky and Harriman Co's No. 1on the GIBSON ROBERTS farm came in Saturday and is said to be a 100-barrel producer. Wetzel, Backer and co"s No. 3 on the BURGESS farm on Beaver creek , came in Tuesday with the showing of a good producer. Kentucky and Ohio Oil and Refining Co's No. 3 on the J.P. INGRAM farm which was drilled in some time since as a big gasser, has developed into a good pumper , which is at present making 100 barrels a day. At a depth of 370 feet the Riverton Oil Co in their No. 1 on the JAMES HICKS' farm, in Missouri Hollow, one mile South of Monticello, struck a large amount of gas and a small showing of oil. They are drilling deeper. The Old Kentucky Oil Co. of Bloomington, Ill are building a rig on the M.A. DODSON farm in Beech Hollow. They expect to begin spudding within two weeks. This company will also drill several wells in Duncan Valley and around Cooper. The following oil men are registered at Hotel Ramsey G.C. TERRY, G.H. ELLING, R.A. WILSON, Nashville, Tenn. J.R. JONES, Monterey, Tenn. H.S. BURR, GEO LESTER, A.L. AVERY, G.P. HAYES, F.P. RUSH, Bradford, Pa. W.O. SUTTON, Butler Pa , EVERETT TAYLOR, Bakersfield, Calif, W.F. The Burt and Lee Co. has been organized under the laws of Kentucky with a capitol stock of $20,000, fully subscribed and paid up. The directors of the new company are T.C. RAMEY, JOHN M. DODSON, Jr. A.C. FREE, CALEB BURT and FRANK BURT . The officers are FRANK BURT, President and Treasurer: A.C. RAMEY, Vice-President : A.C. FREE, Secretary and general manager. The Company owns a lease on the JOHN M. DODSON farm of 1,417 acres upon which operations have already commenced. It is the intention of the company to thoroughly develope this tract within the next year. They also own another smaller lease in the same neighorhood, taken from Stone & Wallace, on which they will at once sink three holes. Jones, Byrnes, & Wilcox shot their No.'s 1, 7, and 8 on JAMES DODSON'S farm Tuesday with excellent results. No. 7 is the well which came in Monday and was heralded as a dry hole --she is now flowing at a100 barrel clip. No"s 1 and 8 will make good producers. The production on the lease is a way above the average. Eight wells and all good producers is no mean record, and especially when the fact is considered that seven of them are making over 50 barrels each, while the remaining one is good for 300 barrels. On account of the insufficiency of the pipe line facilities to handle the product all of these wells are not being pumped. The company has ordered two new gas pumping powers which will be put into immediate service on their arrival, when all the wells will be pumped, not to their limit. but enough to prove that they are all producing wells of the first quality. No's 9 and 10 are being rigged up and spudding will commence at once. Derricks for 11, 12, and 13 are being built. ************************************************************************ USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
