KY The Deposition of Richard Slavey of Lawful age taken at the house of Martin Beaty (inserted: between the hours of 8 o'clock in the morning & 6 o'clock of the afternoon) on the 17th of January 1822 being first duly sworn deposith & saith- 1- Question by Deft- Did or did not Stephen T. Conn agree that you should become a partner with him and myself to bore for saltwater on the South fork Answer-he did 2- Question by same- Did or did not sd. Conn afterwards buy your interest in sd. Well or auger hole and agree to pay all the expenses that had accrued on your one third part from the commencement- Answer- He did 3 Question by same- How much was he (inserted: Conn) to give you for your one third part of sd. auger hole or well Answer- He was to give me one hundred & ninety dollars and to pay the third of the expenses that had accrued 4- Question by same- Do you or do you not know that Conn had a large quantity of the iron he brought to the well to make into Axes, Hoes, Matticks, Plough Irons, Chains, Pot Racks and sundry other work & sold for his private benefit Answer-He did 5th Question by same-Do you or do you not know that Conn had hired W. Parmly to collect the debts for him that he had contracted for the Iron work & goods he sold at the well Answer- W. Parmly attended to the collection of Conns debts and packing provisions to Conns hands 6 Question by same- Did or did not Conn at all times when on settlement with you make you pay for the smith work you got done at the well and did he not pay you for the hunting in this way- Answer-he did. I paid him upwards of one hundred dollars (inserted: in hunting & skins) at one time for smith work & goods I got of him at the well 7th Question by same- Have you or have you not heard Conn say or boast that he made great profits on the work on Iron tools he had made in the shope at the well Answer- I did 8th Question by same- Was or was not three hands enough to carry on the boring at the well whilst Conn and myself were boring together before I sold out to Beaty Answer- Three hands was the number agreed upon to be enough to carry on the work at the well by the partners 9th Question by same- Was you or was you not frequently at the well whilst Conn and myself were boring for saltwater on the South fork Answer- I was there almost every day 10 Question by (inserted:same)- Had or had I not one or more hands constantly at work with Conns hands at the well Answer- You had two hands constantly at work for a long spell after you commenced work and James Ryal was a constant hand in the smith shop and well untill a few days (inserted: before) you sold out to Beaty 11- Question by same- Was or was not Ryal (my hand) the only smith that kept the auger in repair for nearly all the time that Conn and myself were boring together Answer- He was 12- Question by same- Did or did not Conn say that Ryal profited him much more by working in the shop than by working at the boring on the well- Answer- He did and said that he should be paid extra wages 13- Question by same- Did you or did you not know that Ryal was my hand Answer- He was 14 Question by same- From everything you seen about said well and boring dont you believe that I done a full third part of the work at the well or had it done Answer- you did in my opinion for Ryal was a Black Smith and was kept constantly at work when Conns hands were idle waiting for him to fix the auger 15- Question by same- was it or was it not in consideration for Conn agreeing to furnish four hundred feet of Iron auger, Bits Swivels, Black Smith Tools If that you and myself agreed to let him have the one third part of our thousand acre grant- Answer- It was 16- Question by same- Did or did not Conns hands and mine eat seperately from each other & cook seperately- Answer-they did for I frequently eat with them 17- Question by same-Was or was not Conn almost always absent from the well- Answer- He was more than half his time gone from the well 18th-Question by same- Had or had not Conn to pack his provision from the settlement fourteen or fifteen miles from the well Answer- He had 19th-Question by same- Was it or was it not in consequence of the well being so far from the settlement that Conn had to keep a manager to pack provisions for his hands Answer- It was for I went with the manager myself to conduct him to the plan he purchased provisions and further this deponant saith not Rich d Slavey (his mark) This is to Sertify that the above(?) Dipositions(?)
