HISTORY: Co. H, 6th Reg Cav., KY. Vols. CSA Roster Date: Sat, 17 Oct 1998 17:44:18 -0500 Submitter: Diana Flynn ADJUTANT GENERAL'S REPORT CSA PAGES 674-677 Roll of Company H, Sixth Regiment Cavalry, Kentucky Volunteers, Confederate States Army Roll dated February 28, 1863, at Fairfield, Tennessee.--This company was partly organized in Wayne County, Ky., on January 18, 1862, and took part in battle of Fishing Creek. Organization was completed at Livingston, Tennessee. Was first commanded by Captain Shelby Coffey, who died of wounds received January 16, 1862, in Clinton County, Ky. The company reorganized and re-enlisted for the war at Burnsville, Miss., with Napolean B. Stone as Captain. Participated in battle of Shiloh, April 6th and 7th, 1862. May 21, Captain Stone resigned and B. E. Roberts was chosen to command. Participated in battle of Murfreesboro, acting as couriers and patrols during the engagement. Signed: B. E. Roberts Captain Commanding Company. NOTE. -- The "Old Roster" 6th Kentucky Cavalry calls this Company "H," the rolls on file are marked Company "B." The correct letter is "H." Signed: M. C. Saufley, First Lieutenant. NOTE: The nucleus of this company was a body of about 15 men recruited in Wayne County, Ky., in September, 1861, by B. E. Roberts and James M. Saufley. In a skirmish with a company of Wolford's Cavalry in Fentress County, Tennessee, 29th of September, 1861, Saufley was killed. Roberts took the remainder to the independent company of Captain Scott Bledsoe and acted with it under the general command of Col. McNairy, of Nashville, all under the command of General Zollicoffer. While Zollicoffer was at Mill Spring, Roberts and Coffey completed the enlistment--the number reaching about 160 men. The company was transferred from one command to another, until it was finally assigned to the 6th KY. Cavalry, J. Warren Grigsby, Colonel. The foregoing roll, with only a few exceptions as to officers, contains the names only of those who were members at the time of assignment to the 6th Cavalry. On account of the many casualties of war, this company which was originally very strong numerically, was reduced to the number of men whose names are here given. The names ofmany others are not now within my memory. At this date, Samuel N. Cowan, presently of Bozeman, Montana, and the writer, are the only surviving commissioned officers. It is probable that not exceeding ten members of the company are now living. Signed: M. C. Saufley, Formerly 1st Lieut. Co. "H," 6th Ky., Cav. 1st (Duke's) Brigade, Morgan's Cavalry.
