Leatherman WAYNE COUNTY OUTLOOK OBITS FOR NOVEMBER 11, 1998 LEE DUNCAN STOKES, age 85, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away Sunday, November 1, 1998. He was born in Monticello, Kentucky the son of Beulah Duncan and Joel Jefferson Stokes. He married Mary Ann Collins, who survives. He is also survived by three children-Anne Moore, Lee Duncan Stokes Jr., both of Louisville, and Frances Smith of Ames, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; and 3 sisters Lena Hank of Cincinnati, Ohio, Frances Stokes Smith of Starkville, Mississippi, and Mary Helen Watrous of Largo, Florida. He was a World War II Veteran and graduated from the Reserve School of the United States Coast Guard. He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 in both the Atlantic and Pacific-Asiatic Theaters, participated in five major invasions, earned five ribbons and battle stars. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander. He worked for the Southern Railway and the L & N Railroad for over 25 years and was the first certified member in Louisville of the American Society of Traffic and Transportation. He held membership in 17 patriotic and lineage societies, including the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church where he served as head usher, official board member, Sunday School Teacher, and President of his adult class.
