1894 letter from Hannah Corbett to C.S. Melloy Contributed to the Webster County KYGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Phegley, Robert Scott Melloy, Samuel Headley Melloy and Bobbye Reagan who sent the following information to preface the letter: "Mary Hannah Corbett, 12 Jul 1873-22 Mar 1902, was the daughter of Joseph Corbett, whose biography is online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywebste/biogs/biogs5.htm#5 Hannah married Ashton Lewis 29 Nov 1894 in Webster County. Hannah is buried in Big Hill Cemetery next to her mother, Esther Corbett. We do not know what happened to her Dad, Joseph Corbett (of the biography) nor her brothers, except for William Melloy, mentioned in the letter as Willie." Providence, Kentucky July 5, 1894 Mr. C.S. Melloy Evansville, Indiana Dear Brother: We received your letter today and were very glad to hear from you and to know that you are getting along all right and doing well. Mama as you know is never well, but she does not get so nervous as she used to which you know is a great blessing. She was overjoyed to receive the money you sent and nothing would do but I must sit right down and answer it immediately. I was examined at Madisonville and secured a first class certificate good for four years in Hopkins county but I have secured the McGaw School for this year and will have to be examined at Dixon tomorrow and Saturday. Pray for my success Charlie in a first class there too. It will be so handy for me. You see I can go from home every morning and I can help Mama a great deal. I am not coming home from Dixon but am going to Vandersburg where I expect to spend several weeks with my old chum Miss Ida Wright. She is the very best of girls and such a little might and just to think she used to be larger than myself. Her father and mother came after her the last day of school and I went and took dinner with them. They are such nice people I know I will have just a splendid time. Mr. T.B. Payne buried both Strotha and his little baby last Saturday. It was a sad sight to see him put two children in the grave at one time. Mr. Hunter and Strotha had gone squirrel hunting when by some accident or other S got his arm shot and it was taken off. Everything was done for him that possibly could be but blood poison sat up and had to go. It was a sad blow to his parents. Willie (Melloy) was here not long ago and said he had got out about three acres of tobacco. We are looking for Annie (Headley Melloy) and the babies over Sunday. Little Marion (Melloy) is growing like a weed. He is nearly as large as Charlie (Melloy) now. I must close now. No more at present. Love from all, from your sister, H. Corbett PS Be sure to write soon for Mama says that was only a piece of a letter. Write soon. Hannah ***************************************************************** Copyright.
