THOMAS DIES IN WHEATCROFT Mrs Mary Ellen Thomas, 80, died at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs Willie Drennon, in Wheatcroft following a five weeks' illness. Survivors besides Mrs. Drennon are two other daughters, Mrs. Hattie Clark, Wheatcroft, and Mrs. Mary Beshears, Marion; two sons, Curby Thomas, Princeton, and John Harvey Thomas, Evansville; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Travis, Marion, and Mrs. Lula Thomas, Clarkton, Mo.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Iona Campbell and Mrs. Cordie Sutton, Marion; one half-brother, Myrtle McDowell, Idaho; 26 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pleasant Hill church in Crittenden county with the Rev. J.J. James officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. -------------------- SON OF MR AND MRS C.B.BLACKBURN DIES TUESDAY Charles Roland Blackburn, Jr., son born Thursday afternoon, Feb. 6, to Mr and Mrs Charles R. Blackburn in Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville, died there Tuesday Morning. Survivors besides the parents, are a sister, Jeanne Greene Blackburn; and grandparents, Mr and Mrs B. R. Blackburn, Hopkinsville, and Mrs Wesley Crowe, Providence. Brief funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Melton Funeral Home, with the Rev. S. A. Matthews officiating, and burial was in Lakeview cemetery. Mrs Blackburn returned from the hospital Tuesday evening and is at the home of Mr and Mrs Crowe. -------------------- MRS MINNIE WATSON DIES NEAR DIXON Mrs Minnie Watson,84, widow of the late Gus Watson, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at her home near Dixon. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs Maud Higginson, Johnson City, Ill. a brother, Clay Baker, of Clay; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Tapp Funeral Home in Dixon at 1:30 p.m. today, Thursday, with the Rev. E. G. Sisk and the Rev. Minvil Clark officiating. Pallbearers are to be Jack Baker, James Baker, Robert Baker, Allen Herron, Bryan Watson, and J. F. Baker. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery, Dixon. -------------------- HONORED AT COLLEGE Orman R. Wright, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Wright, sr., Dixon, has been elected upperclassman representative of the College of Arts and Sciences in the assembly of the University of Kentucky Student Government Association, President Howard Stephenson, Midway, has announced. The election was the second of the year held by SGA. During the fall quarter, 10 assembly members were chosen in a campus wide election to initiate a new system of representation in accordance with the proportion of men and women on the campus. Wright is a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. He is a graduate of Lebanon High School. --------------------- MRS. MOLLIE COWAN DIED IN CLAY Mrs. Mollie Cowan, 79, died at her home in Clay at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, following a long illness. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs John Newcom of Repton and Mrs Frona Travis of Chicago; five sons, Joe, Robert, Carlos and Homer Cowan of Clay, and Albert Cowan of Blackford; twenty-four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Walter Mattingly of Providence, Bert Mattingly of Wheatcroft, and Ed Mattingly of Clay; and two sisters, Mrs Ed Prow and Mrs Ella Samuels of Clay. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove Church near Blackford, by the Rev. J. R. King. Buriel was in Oak Grove cemetery. -------------------- WM PORTER SMITH DIES IN CLAY William Porter Smith, 68, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home in Clay following a long illness. Survivors are the wife, Mrs Verda Smith, a son Marvin Smith, Clay; one brother, Noah Smith, Lisman, and two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Armstrong, Eddyville, and Mrs. Ida Armstrong, Kuttawa. Mr Smith, a retired miner was formerly Chief of Police in Clay. Funeral services are to be at 2:30 this afternoon in Franklin Funeral Home in Clay, with the Rev. E. Y. Laslie of Poole officiating. Burial will be in IOOF cemetery, Clay. -------------------- REV. I.W. NAPIER DIES MONDAY The Rev. Isaiah Wesley Napier, 69, of Clay, pastor of the Clay and Dixon Methodist churches, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday in an Evansville hospital, following an illness of four months. Rev. Napier came to Clay from Eddyville last October. He had been in the Methodist ministry for thirty-five years and before coming to Clay had served as pastor of the following churches: Thompkinsville, Bowling Green circuit, Boxville, Elkhorn, Kuttawa, Upton, Adairville, Tolu, Bennett Memorial in Henderson, Third Street in Owensboro, Oakdale in Louisville, Broadway in Bowling Green, and Eddyville. He was born and reared in Allen county, near Scottsville. Survivors are the wife,Mrs Audrey Napier; one daughter, Mrs Geta Seifried, Clarksville, Ind.; two brothers, the Rev. H. C. Napier, Scottsville, and Baker Napier, Petroleum, Ky; three sisters, Miss Jane Napier, Mrs. Ella Williams, and Mrs. Marion Jones, Adolphus, Ky.; and one grandchild. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church in Clay at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with Dr Bedford Turner, Henderson district superintendent of the Methodist church officiating. Business houses in Clay were closed for the funeral. This is the first time a Clay church has lost a pastor by death. White, is with him. J. M. Freer of Louisville spent the latter part of last week with his sister, Mrs. A. S. Dorroh and Mr Dorroh. A daughter, Kordelia Ann, was born to Mr and Mrs Vernon R. Whitledge of the county on Wednesday, Feb 5. Miss Bobby Anna Cowan of Louisville spent the latter part of last week at her home here and attended the funeral Friday of Mrs Mollie Cowan at Oak Grove. Mr and Mrs Eddie Carlisle of Pennsylvania visited Mr and Mrs Gammon Marshall of the county last week. Phyllis Ann, young daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Adams is improving after a week's illness. -------------------- LISMAN NEWS Mr and Mrs Cyril Winstead and daughter, Charlotte Ann, spent Sunday in Liberty with Mrs Winstead's parents, Mr and Mrs Davis Frederick. Mr and Mrs W.H. Richardson of Henderson spent Monday with Mr and Mrs Thomas Cole and daughter, Anna Lou. Mr and Mrs Harold Wilson and daughter, Kay, of Morganfield were dinner guests Sunday of Mrs Wilson's parents, Mr and Mrs C. E. Price. Mr and Mrs Robert Birdwell and children, Billy and Barbara Nell, visited with Mr and Mrs Thomas Cole and daughter, Anna Lou, Monday evening. Mrs Jim Lynn and children spent the week-end in Evansville with her sister, Mrs Austin. -------------------- WHEATCROFT Justin Allen McKinney A son, Justin Allen, was born to Mr and Mrs Everet McKinney on Feb. 6 in Henderson. Mrs. McKinney was Miss Alene Farmer, formerly of Wheatcroft. Jimmie Joe Cowan, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Cowan, was taken to Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville Friday morning with an ear infection. She is getting along as well as can be expected. Her mother is with her. Mrs. V. G. Robold and daughter, Pat, left Friday to join her husband, Sgt. Robold at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Laron Phillips was called to Johnston City, Ill. Tuesday on account of the death of his brother, Clarence Phillips. Mrs. Glen Hudson and daughter, Nancy, of Clay spent several days last week with her parents, Mr and Mrs John Brown. Mrs Eurie Dye of Marion spent last week with her parents, Mr and Mrs Walter Brown. Mr and Mrs Wm. Whitledge and children of Henderson spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs Lee Brown. Mrs Thorton Tapp of Madisonville spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs Arch Mooney. Mrs George Powell was brought from the Henderson hospital Tuesday and taken to the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Gordon Wommack at Poole where she will remain for a few days before coming to her home in Dixon. Miss Geneva Bryant of Owensboro spent Saturday night and Sunday with her mother, Mrs L. C. Bryant. Mrs Tony Stinnett attended a birthday dinner Tuesday at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs C. L. Brown, of Poole, honoring the birthdays of Mrs Brown, who was 61, and her son, Charles T. Brown, who was 25. FAMILY REUNION HELD SUNDAY A family reunion was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Hobart Gardner, near Dixon, Sunday. Those present were; Mr and Mrs Vernon Gardner and children. Kenneth, Charles and Sharon Mae, of Newburgh, Ind. Mr and Mrs Vivian Martin, Jr., Earl Gardner and Dee Perdue of Evansville; Hobart Gardner, Jr., of Pendleton, Ind., and Mr and Mrs Ray Duncan of near Liberty. BLACKFORD Mr and Mrs Glen H. DeHaven and Mr and Mrs Bill DeHaven of Evansville were dinner guests Sunday of Mrs C. W. DeHaven, Robert and Major DeHaven. TO CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr and Mrs Joseph Waggener, near Blackford, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday. They will have open house to friends in the afternoon. DAUGHTER BORN Mr and Mrs Vernon Ray Whitledge, near Blackford are parents of a daughter born last Thursday. Mrs Whitledge is the former Miss Billy Durgin, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. E. Durgin of Blackford. Mrs J. D. Farris, Emory University, Ga., is visiting her mother, Mrs D. T. White. Neil W. Price of Evansville spent the week-end with his parents, Mr and Mrs Ben H. Price. Mrs Wm. E. Martin returned to Detroit Tuesday after spending two weeks with her mother, Mrs. Betty Litchfield. Mrs Litchfield accompanied her to Indianapolis where she will visit Mr and Mrs Pit Litchfield. Mr and Mrs Bob Pride of Pride visited Mrs Alcy Johnson and Mr and Mrs Bob Ruoff Sunday. Mr and Mrs Ruoff returned home to Indianapolis Sunday afternoon. SLAUGHTERS BIRTHDAYS CELEBRATED Edgar Timmons and daughter, Sue, and son-in-law, Richard Kolody, celebrated their birthdays last Sunday at their home near Slaughters, with a dinner. Guests besides the family were Mr and Mrs Colvin Quirey and daughter, Janice. ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED WITH DINNER SUNDAY Mr and Mrs Fred Jobe were honored guests at an anniversary dinner, given by seven of their children out of a family of nine. The couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 9, at their home in Slaughters. Present were Mrs Will King of Hanson; Sammie Jobe and Mrs Emery West of Evansville; Mrs Earl Majors, Clara Bell, James and Betty of Slaughters. Absent were Mrs Dearwood Basham of Maceo; and Pfc. R. D. Jobe in Alaska. Pictures were taken and everyone had a nice time. DUNCAN-GRISHAM "abstracted" The marriage of Bonnie B. Duncan of Evansville to Everett L. Grisham, son of Mr and Mrs W. C. Grisham, Slaughters, was solemnized Monday, Feb. 3, at 8 O'clock at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs Anna Ourns with the Rev. Rice Kello of Evansville officiatig. Miss Nan Lee Ourns, niece of the bride, was maid of honor and James Abernathy was best man. Mr and Mrs Grisham are staying temporarily at 25 E. Morgan Ave. in Evansville. Mr and Mrs Richard Kolody of Madisonville spent last week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs Edgar Timmons. Miss Marion Smith of Shepherdsville and Misses Roberta and Catherine Major, students at Bethel College, Hopkinsville spent last week-end here with Misses Major's mother, Mrs Carl Major. Mr and Mrs Tracy Villines and son, Larry, spent last week-end in Bowling Green with her parents, Mr and Mrs B. E. Tinsley. Sgt. Norvel Brown, who has been stationed at Aberdeen, Md., is spending an eighteen day furlough with his parents, Mr and Mrs Basil Brown. He will report back to Camp Kilmer, N.J., for reassignment. Pvt. Charles Sizemore, who has just finished his basic training at Fort Bragg, N.C., is spending a nine-day furlough with his parents, Mr and Mrs William Sizemore, on route to Camp Kilmer, N.J., for reassignment. Knute Townsend of Chicago is visiting relatives here. Mrs Ruth Allen of Evansville is spending this week with her parents, Mr and Mrs Leslie Moore. Mrs. Clay Nance, who underwent a major operation at an Evansville hospital last week was able to be moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs W. E Seay, on Monday. Lloyd Wells of Henderson visited his mother, Mrs L. F. Wells, Monday. Mr and Mrs F. A. Carlisle spent last week-end in Nashville with their daughter, Mrs Earl Moore and Mr Moore. Miss Joyce Brown, a student at Bethel College, Hopkinsville, spent last week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs Clyde Brown. Pvt. E. Syler, son of Mr and Mrs W. E. Syler of Huntland, Tenn. The marriage was solemnized in a candlelight service at 9 p.m. Saturday, February 9, in the home of Dr. and Mrs Earl Frye. The Rev. S.A. Matthews, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated with the double ring ceremony, with members of the family and Dr. and Mrs Frey present. Mr and Mrs J. P. Curry of Evansville spent Sunday with Mrs Curry's sister, Mrs J. W. Hughes, and Mr Hughes. Mrs J. B. Allen returned Sunday from a month's visit with her daughter, Mrs Robert Towery, and Mr Towery in Hopkinsville. Miss Elaine Jones, Western Teachers College, Bowling Green, spent the week- end with her parents, Mr and Mrs Clarence Jones. JAMES MICHAEL VAUGHN Mr and Mrs Woodrow Vaughn, 210 Barbour Street, are parents of a son born Feb. 11. Weight was seven and one-half pounds and he has been named James Michael. Mrs Robert Reusch returned last week to her home in Ft. Thomas after a visit with her parents, Mr and Mrs Ragon Niswonger. Mr and Mrs Harold Trader spent the week-end in Murray with her sister, Mrs James Shuck, and Mr Shuck. Mr and Mrs Curtis Wingo are parents of a daughter. Judith Fay, born Feb. 11 in Cardwell's Clinic. NINETIETH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED SUNDAY Friends and relatives surprised J. R. Sigler of Henderson, formerly of Clay and Providence, with a dinner Sunday, Feb. 1 at the home of Mr and Mrs Luther Sigler, near Henderson, where he makes his home. The occasion was in honor of his 90th birthday. Others present were Mr and Mrs Henry Watson, Mr and Mrs W. T. Watson and son and Mr and Mrs A. O. Watson of Poole; Mr and Mrs Elby Watson and son, Mr and Mrs Clarence Sigler, Mr and Mrs Eldon Rideout and daughter, Mr and Mrs Roy Bridwell, Mr and Mrs Clifton Tomlington and Mr and Mrs Henry Sigler of Henderson; Mr and Mrs Ellis McGill and family of Sebree; Mr and Mrs Clay Villines and son of Dixon; W. D. Sigler, Mr and Mrs Carl Sigler and daughter and Marita Hurt of Robards. Afternoon guests were Mr and Mrs Bill Crawford and son, Jimmie. There were 6 children, 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren present to help celebrate Mr Sigler's birthday. There were two large cakes, each decorated with 90 candles. He was able to go to the table and blow out the candles on his cake. ONTON NEWS Mr and Mrs Bob Gilett of Owensboro and Mr and Mrs Roy Sellars and children of South Bend, Ind., are here visiting their parents, Mr and Mrs M. A. Sellars. Mr Sellars is quite ill. POOLE NEWS A son was born to Mr and Mrs Eugene Chandler at the Henderson hospital Thursday, Feb. 6. The baby weighed six and one-fourth pounds and has been named Vernon Eugene. PINKSTON - PURYEAR Miss Imogene Pinkston and Lewis Puryear pledged their marriage vows Thursday evening, Feb. 6, in the home of the Rev. Curtis Posey in Dixon. Attendants were Natalee Pinkston, sister of the bride, and Charles Puryear, brother of the groom. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Pinkston of Dixie. She is employed in the Farm Bureau office at Henderson. Mr Puryear is the son of Mr and Mrs George Puryear of Poole. SIX RELATIVES ENTER MASONRY AT SAME TIME At a regular meeting of the Poole Masonic Lodge No. 604, on Feb. 8, an unusual happening occurred which seems worthy of recording. There were six candidates for the first degree. That's not so unusual for the Poole lodge. The unusual part comes next. They were all the sons, sons-in-law and grandson of Mrs. Nettie Crowley. The son, Wilburn Crowley; the son-in- law, Don Chandler, and the grandsons were the four sons of Don, namely, Starling, Ralph, Eugene and Eldon. Mrs. Crowley also has another son Marvin, who has been a member of the Poole lodge for several years. Mrs J. A. Bruce and grandson, Richard Allen, of Dixon were week-end guests of Mr and Mrs Ellis Williams and family. Mr Bruce was a dinner guest Sunday. Mr and Mrs Raymond Drury and daughter, Marlin Ray, of Flemingburg, Ky., Mr and Mrs George Drury and son were guests of Mr and Mrs Jack Chandler last week-end. Mr and Mrs Leo Hollien of Shreveport, La., were the guests of Mr and Mrs G. O. Dixon and family the past week. Mrs Hollien was formerly Miss Dorothy Dixon. Mr and Mrs Hugh Melton and family, Mr and Mrs Frank Thornsberry and son, Frank,Jr., and Miss Georgia Dixon were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs W. D. Garrard of Evansville Sunday. Mr and Mrs Jack Crowley, Mr and Mrs Lee Strumm, Mr and Mrs Buster Crowley, Mr and Mrs Rankin Melton and daughter, Mary Katherine, Mr and Mrs Norris Crowley, Miss Georgia Dixon, Mrs Alice Crowley, Halloway Poole and Ray Brinson attended the Lincoln Day banquet Friday evening at the Morgan Hotel in Providence. The banquet was given by the Republican Woman's Club of Webster county. Clay Crowley and a girl friend of Owensboro spent Sunday with his mother, Mrs Nettie Crowley. page 8 MRS. J.W. HENSON DIES IN HENDERSON Mrs Sadie Wormer Henson, 81, former Dixon resient and wife of former Circuit Judge J. W. Henson, died Tuesday night at her home in Henderson. Survivors are the husband; a daughter, Mrs Erphene Lynch; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in St. Paul's Episcopal church in Henderson, with the Rev. Arch C. Hopper officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery, Dixon. V. J. KENNEDY ACCEPTS POSITION IN COLLEGE V. J. Kennedy, formerly of Providence, has been appointed assistant professor of music at the University of Omaha, Omaha, Neb., effective this semester. Mr Kennedy went there from Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Tex., where he was doing graduate work. Before going to S.M.U. he had taught in high schools of Kentucky and had received his Bachelor's degree from Murray State College. During the war he served with the Air Corps. At the University of Omaha he will teach courses in theory and music education. He is a brother to J. B.
