Shopman. Prisoner Sent To Williamsburg For Safe Keeping By Associated Press Corbin, Nov. 1 -- Policeman George Marcum, formerly of Middlesboro and London, shot and killed Cy Davis, 26, former Louisville and Nashville Shopman in a vacant lot in the rear of the Smith Hotel early today. The shooting aroused such a pitch of feeling that Marcum surrendered to Mayor Gilliam who held him under guard until daylight when he sent Marcum to jail at Williamsburg. Considerable mystery surrounds the shooting. Marcum ran into the hotel just after the killing and told the mayor and other bystanders he had "just killed a man." Marcum said Davis had been "shooting up the town," and when he tried to arrest him Davis shot at him. He said he then seized his gun and shot him twice. George Marcum left here about a year ago for Corbin where he has since been employed as a night policeman. He lived in Middlesboro four or five years previous to this, and worked here at the carpenter trade. He lived on the corner of Exeter Avenue and Twenty-second street in the house now owned by Judge J.E. Evans. Before coming to Middlesboro Marcum served on the London police force for several years. He was a quiet and well-thought-of citizen, his friends say. Reports received here intimate that a third party was complicated in the matter and that perhaps Marcum was not the one who did the shooting.
