She was born May 28, 1914 in Whitley County to the late Rev. James and Elizabeth Monhollen Brewer. She was preceded in death by her 14 brothers and sisters, and her first husband, Oliver Engle, to whom she was married from May 15, 1931 until his passing on August 3, 1975. Ruby belonged to the Candle Ridge Baptist Church, the Bryant Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for 52 years, and was a former member and officer of the Rebeccas at Gray. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Shirley and Mavis Engle, and Berdeina and Ova Herren of Corbin, and Judy L. and Alfred L. Smith of Grays; Rev. Alonzo Sharp and eight step-children; 6 grandchildren and their spouses, Debbie and Charles Felts of London, Jim and Sheila Herren, and Bill and Gina Herren of Corbin, Michael H. and Sherri Smith of London, Sherri and Steelie Scalf of Grays, and Alfred L. (Al) Smith II of Nicholasville; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dewey Engle of Williamsburg; a sister-in-law, Clydia Haggard of Grays; and her caretaker, Allie Brown of Grays. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 5 at the O'Neil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sam Moore and Rev. Herschell Walker officiating. Interment was in the Candle Ridge Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Friends and fellow church members were the honorary bearers. O'Neil Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
