Readme file for Taulbee Indexes http://files.usgwarchives.net/ky/wolfe/books/taulbee2.txt http://files.usgwarchives.net/ky/wolfe/books/taulbee3.txt Rose Taulbee's Family History Rose Taulbee, a retired school teacher living in Pennsylvania, spent the last twenty years of her life creating the only definitive work on the Taulbee Family. She published her work prior to it being finished in 1983 because she knew she was dying of cancer and wanted to get it published before dying. Only three hundred were ever printed, although countless photo copies have been shared with members of the Taulbee list. Because she had to rush to get it published prior to her death, she did not have time to create an index. Now, about fifteen years after her death, two indexes have been created by Louise Gaskill, () a Taulbee descendant. The first [taulbee2.txt] lists all Taulbee and variants in the book. The second [taulbee3.txt] lists all other surnames. These two indexes are placed on line for the benefit of all who have a copy of Rose's book. Rose's book begins with John Talby in the Bay Colony in 1636, whose wife Dorothy was hanged in Boston in 1638 for the murder of their infant daughter, named Difficulty. From there it traces the family (Now Talbee) into Rhode Island. A generation is missing between the Rhode Island Talbees and the appearance of Edward Talbee, who died in 1709, Baltimore County, Maryland. The proof that this is the same line has never been found. From Edward, the book traces the migration of his only known son, Samuel Talbee, into North Carolina. Mostly the book then tells the story of the descendants of Samuel's son, William Hitchcock Taulbee and William's wife, Margaret Cannady. William Hitchcock's sons move into Floyd County, Kentucky, becoming established in Breathitt, Morgan, Perry, and Wolfe Counties. By the time they enter Kentucky, the main variants of the surname are Taulbee and Tolby. Mostly, those sons who remained in Kentucky became Taulbee, the sons who went into Indiana and Illinois became Tolby. The name is pronounced the same no matter how it is spelled. The book is silent on what happened to at least three of William's brothers. Following Rose's death, her brother threw out her twenty years of research notes and documentation, leaving her work, in effect, undocumented. Several Taulbee descendants on the Taulbee Mail List (Taulbee-L@rootsweb.com) are attempting to gather as much documentation as possible, as well as correct errors as they are found. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who can assist in this endeavor. Robert L.
