Barrousse, Oscar District Attorney Ogden appeared for the State. The examination was before his honor, Judge Lewis, who upon hearing the evidence of the witnesses ordered the prisoner discharged. The evidence as adduced by the witnesses was in the mind of the court, sufficient to warrant the discharge of the prisoner. It appeared that the colored man made an unprovoked and vigorous attack without word or warning. That to better facilitate the job of whipping his man, he grabbed a club and several times attempted to strike O'Pry, who in self defense drew his pistol and shot his assailant. The ball entered the lower left side of the negro who, it is said, is still living. (2) Barousse, Edgar - see A. J. O'Pry. (2) Hayes, Lewis - see A. J. O'Pry. (2) Lansdale?, J. M. - see A. J. O'Pry. Two weeks ago, the little two-year old daughter of Mr. Jackson Chachere, (through the carelesness of some one leaving, the bottle down in reach of the child) drank some concentrated lye which resulted in its death in a short time; the father had gone for medical assistance for his wife so there was no one at home to remove the dangerous stuff. (2) Knott, Rosa Mrs. - Prairie Hayes News. On the 5th of this month (March) there was an unusual sad burial at the Prudhomme cemetary, being that of Mrs. Rosa Knott, daughter of the late Mansell Andrus, a young bride of only two months. As before mentioned the child was taken sick on the way here from Nebraska. (12) The folowing is an obiturary in the paper of (13). Died - at the residence of her parents, near the town of Crowley, June 7th, 1888, Edith Ethel, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Lock, late of Central City, Nebraska. Edith Ethel was aged 2 years, 10 months and 7 days. Though a stranger to the family the writer was called to perform the last sacred rite to the dear departed one by holding a funeral service at the house of the parents. It was a very solemn occassion, for here were lacerated and bleeding hearts, because a sweet and lovely young flower, dear to the hearts of all this interesting family, had faded and gone, never more to cheer and comfort them in this life, Edith Ethel was dead, and an affectionate father, a devoted mother, and grand-parents, an aunt and two little brothers and sister were left to mourn her loss. Now Edith is no more. Her lovely form lies cold and silent in that little grave, but her immortal spirit has been borne away to the paradise of God, for she was young and pure and innocent; just such a child as the blessed Savior called to be his own when he said "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven." I would say to the bereaved parents mourn not nor weep as those who have no hope, for Jesus hath taken your precious Edith to himself, and now she is beckoning you to come to that city in the skies, and posses with her an everlasting home over on the other shore. Lock, Edith Ethel - see James Lock. (13) Sloane, Sarah Mrs. - of Lake Charles is on visit to her daughters, Mrs. John Childs and Mrs. Douglas Young. (14) Cattle Rustling - We are informed that on the 15th inst. the stock keeper of R. B. Slaone was riding on th Prairie in the Vicinity of Francois Savois' residence in the northern part of the parish and found where unknown parties had butchered the night before. The thief had taken all the meat leaving the hide in the prairie. Upon examination it was found to have the brand of R. B. Sloane. It seems that it would be an easy matter to detect such bold rascals as those. There surely is more than one implicated in a matter of this kind.
