Stewart, John Stewart, James Sonier, John - Proposed Pardon for John Sonier. It is rumored on pretty good authority that John Sonier, an escaped convict who was sent to the state penetentiary from St. Landry, is soon to surrender under a previously arranged plan by which he is promised a pardon. While we are especially and particulary opposed to his pardon, we also greatly dislike the manner in which it is to be egected. it would appear that the workers of the scheme do not care what means are employed provided their object is accomplished. We do not believe that Gov. Nichols would grant the pardon were he aware of the methods employed. Sonier is undoubtedly a dangerous character and was captured by Ex- Sheriff Duson after a long and tediou hunt. He was convicted of murder and sentanced to imprisonment for life. He made his escape something more than one year ago and it is said has surrounded himself with unusual protection among his friends in the pine woods of Northern Calcasieu.
