Augmented by a stiff breeze, it took but a few moments to reach the gin and set it on fire. The gin was a total loss with no insurance and John Clark, who has charge of the place, experienced great difficulty in saving the barn and stable from destruction. (17) Higginbotham, Joseph Leger, Felix Latiolais, Alexander Leblue, Jules Mermentau Storm Victims - (Note: there is an inconsistancy in the report; In one place Thibodeaux is survivor and another Miller is the survivor) Six lives lost during storm on the 15th. Six lives lost at Grand Isle during the storm of two weeks ago last night, and the rescue of the almost lifeless body of the seventh victim, is the harrowing story brought back by the steamer Olive, shich the last of the week returned to Mermentau from a trip dwon to the fulf. Those who lost their lives were Mrs. D. Thibodeaux, Widow Thibodeaux and three little daughters and Mr. Dupraville Miller, Mr. D. Thibodeaux being the only member of the party who escaped to tell the story, and he wandered around four days without food or shelter before being picked up. The above party left Mermentau some days previous to the 15th for a visit to friends at Cheniere Pardieu, below Grand Lake, on the Mermentau river. After having made their vissit the party started for home on the morning of the 15th, but on account of a heavy wind coming up they were compelled to stop a short distance below Grand lake. Late in the evening the wind had sufficiently subsided as to permit them to renew their journey. When about midway of the lake, which is some fifteen miles long and three to five miles wide, they were overtaken by a strong gale from the west, and while within a half mile of the west shore they found it impossible to land the boat. After drifting helplessly about for some time the boat became unmanagable and capsized. All the occupants were thrown out with the exception of Mr. Miller, who clung to the rigging. Widow Thibodeaux and her three children were at once swallowed up by the waves and were seen no more. Mr. Thibodeaux caught his wife and supported her for a time but his strength giving way she was torn from his grasp. He managed to swim to the east shore where he wandered about in search of his companions for four days without food or shelter. A hunter named Albert Nunez found on the 20th and took him on board his schooner. The skiff was also found and in it was the lifeless body of Miller, who had been drowned or died from exposure. On Tuesday of last week the steamer Olive discovered the body of Mrs. D. Thibodeaux floating in Grand Lake, some miles from where the sad and fatal accident occurred. The other bodies, excepting tow of the children have been recovered. There is very little travel on the river between Lake Arthur and the Gulf, which accounts for the lapse of time between the tragedy and the rescue of Miller and the recovery of any of the bodies. The treacherous sea marsh that surrounds Grand Lake makes travel by land an impossibility, and had it not been for the opportune arrival of Mr. Nunez Mr. Miller would have soon perished. The news has brought sorrow to many friends and it is one of the saddest accidents it has ever been our duty to record wherein so many of our citizens have been the victims.
